The Patchwork Girl of Oz recap

Lonely Munchkin boy Ojo visits the Crooked Magician just as Scraps, a patchwork servant, is brought to life. An accident petrifies Ojo's guardian Unc Nunkie and the magician's wife Margolotte. Ojo sets out for rare ingredients that may restore them, joined by Scraps, the vain Glass Cat, and the Woozy. After many encounters, Ojo is arrested for picking a protected six-leaved clover, but Ozma forgives him and lets the quest continue. The party survives Yoop, quarrelsome Hoppers and Horners, a dark well, and a trick river. The Tin Woodman refuses to let Ojo harm a butterfly for the cure. Back at the magician's house, the Wizard restores the petrified pair by other magic. Ozma removes Dr. Pipt's unlawful powers, Ojo regains his family, and Scraps is welcomed as a free citizen of Oz.

Ozma rules a peaceful fairyland where Dorothy, the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, Shaggy Man, and Wizard are among her friends. Magic is carefully controlled: Ozma and Glinda permit very few people to practice it. The Wizard, once only a stage magician, has begun learning real magic in Oz.

Ojo lives alone with his quiet guardian, Unc Nunkie, in a poor corner of the Munchkin Country. Hoping for a change, they visit Dr. Pipt, the Crooked Magician, and his wife Margolotte. Margolotte has sewn a colorful patchwork servant, while Dr. Pipt has completed the Powder of Life needed to animate her. The powder brings Scraps to life with more cleverness and independence than intended. The household also contains a proud living Glass Cat. During the excitement, a vessel holding a petrifying liquid is overturned onto Unc Nunkie and Margolotte, turning both into lifeless marble. Dr. Pipt says a difficult magical mixture can restore them, and Ojo prepares to seek its rare ingredients.

Ojo leaves with Scraps and the Glass Cat to gather what Dr. Pipt needs. A troublesome talking phonograph briefly joins them before they abandon its noisy company. They meet a foolish owl, a supposedly wise donkey, and the Woozy, a blue, square-bodied creature whose tail hairs are wanted for the cure. The Woozy joins the travelers. The Shaggy Man helps them pass a giant porcupine, and the party later encounters Dorothy's old friend the Scarecrow. Scraps and the Scarecrow delight in each other's unusual appearance and lively conversation, giving the wandering Patchwork Girl a friendship she had never expected.

Ojo finds a six-leaved clover, although picking it is forbidden by Ozma's law. Omby Amby arrests him and takes him to the Emerald City. Dorothy comforts Ojo, and Ozma hears the case. Because he acted to save Unc Nunkie rather than for selfish gain, Ozma forgives him, but she cannot simply cancel the consequences of the law or complete the cure herself. Ojo is allowed to resume his search with his friends. Their remaining route leads into less familiar parts of Oz, and he continues with greater hope after discovering that the ruler he feared is just and compassionate.

Ojo's party meets the playful Tottenhots, escapes the captive giant Yoop, and becomes involved in a quarrel between the one-legged Hoppers and the horned Horners before helping the two peoples make peace. Ojo secures water from a dark well and survives a river that plays tricks on travelers. Near the end of the search, the Tin Woodman refuses to let anyone injure a yellow butterfly for the potion. They return without every requested ingredient, but the Wizard uses his own magic to restore Unc Nunkie and Margolotte. Ozma removes Dr. Pipt's unlawful magical powers. Ojo is happily reunited with his guardian, while Scraps remains free and finds a welcome among the Scarecrow and Ozma's other friends.

Ojo obtains water from the dark well and continues homeward, but the Tin Woodman refuses to permit the killing of a yellow butterfly for the cure. The travelers therefore return to Dr. Pipt without every ingredient he demanded. The Wizard takes charge and uses his genuine magical training to restore Unc Nunkie and Margolotte from their petrified state without sacrificing the butterfly. Ozma punishes Dr. Pipt for practicing forbidden magic by taking away his powers, but allows him to continue an ordinary life with his restored wife. Ojo is reunited with Unc Nunkie. The Glass Cat remains alive, the Woozy has found friends, and Scraps is welcomed in Oz as a free person rather than kept as a household servant. Her lively friendship with the Scarecrow gives the Patchwork Girl a place among Ozma's unusual companions.
