The twelfth book in the Beneath the Dragoneye Moons series opens as Elaine and Iona become engaged, and Elaine's class evolves into Arbiter of Life and Death, expanding her healing and battlefield powers. The engagement is complicated when Arachne reports that three powerful phoenixes have arrived in Sanguino searching for Elaine's bonded phoenix companion Auri, believing she may be held against her will. Their tense first meeting turns hostile before Elaine recounts how she rescued Auri as an egg from the dragon Loonkot's lair, hatched her, and later formed their bond, and the phoenixes agree to let the relationship continue. Separately, the moon goddesses reveal that Loonkot is secretly directing a cult infiltrating the government, a threat Sentinel commander Arachne begins investigating as Elaine juggles wedding planning, new skill choices, and the aftermath of a recent war.
