In short (whole book)

Jake Thayne strengthens his archery, mana control, and alchemy while his hidden settlement grows into Haven under Miranda Wells. He kills Abby and Donald after their siege, helps Hawkie and Mystie complete their egg ritual, and gains Sylphie as a young companion. At the nearby fort, Jake discovers that the Minotaur Mindchief engineered recurring herd attacks and kills it, freeing its captives. The fort then becomes Haven's allied outpost. Jake develops a covert fungicide and destroys the Indigo Fungus Mycorrhiza, exposing an unopened D-grade dungeon. He completes a perfect Human D evolution, chooses Avaricious Arcane Hunter, and becomes the Malefic Viper's heretic chosen rather than his champion. A legacy experience reveals the Viper's past as the Wyvern of the Desolates and upgrades Jake's Palette of the Malefic Viper to legendary. With the First World Congress days away, Jake leaves Hawkie caring for Sylphie and explores the deeper forest.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Jake Thayne enters this volume as a hunter and alchemist allied with the Malefic Viper, who is both his patron and his friend. Jacob and Casper remain important figures following separate paths. Jake already relies on archery, poison, Powershot, Infused Powershot, and Venomfang as he continues growing stronger after the events of the earlier volumes.

Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)

Jake hunts across a high-altitude cloud continent with a wind hawk he names Hawkie. After discovering that ordinary arrows and poison perform poorly against semi-intangible Cloud Elementals, he learns to create explosive Mana Bolts and later combines that structure with his arrows. Their repeated hunts raise both partners' levels, though they avoid two D-grade powers near the continent's great lightning tree. Elsewhere, the Malefic Viper begins rebuilding his order. He recalls the three sisters of the Verdant Lagoon, places them in leadership, and plans to recruit Jake into the order's academy while keeping his identity secret. At the hidden pylon settlement, Miranda Wells studies her City Lord authority. Only four residents are registered, the city remains undeveloped, and Jake is its absent owner. Miranda learns how ownership can be challenged but initially refuses to begin such a claim. Jake then receives notice that she has started a thirty-day contest for the pylon. Believing the residents may have betrayed him, he abandons the cloud continent and races back toward the valley.

Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)

Neil arrives with Eleanor, Christen, Silas, and Levi, a stronger five-person team fleeing Neil's cousin Abby. Neil inherited a space-mage path and won a legendary spatial orb, prompting Abby and her followers to hunt his party. Miranda grants the visitors temporary refuge, and both groups prepare the lodge for attack. Abby arrives with more than a hundred people and rejects the settlement's claim to the land. Her assault forces the defenders behind paired mana and spatial barriers, while Levi suffers a devastating injury. With the barriers failing, Miranda initiates a pylon contest solely to alert the absent owner. Jake returns in a rage but listens to her explanation before turning on the attackers. He kills Donald and Abby after learning that their rule relied on coercion, abuse, and murder. Miranda surrenders the ownership contest and remains City Lord. Jake recognizes that his bloodline may amplify perceived betrayal into dangerous loss of control. The surviving followers are registered as citizens, and Neil's entire team chooses to stay. Jake leaves administration to Miranda, infrastructure to Hank, and local defense to Neil's party whenever he is away.

Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)

Jake returns to Hawkie and the cloud islands, refining both Mana Bolt and his archery. At class level ninety he chooses Arrow of the Ambitious Hunter, a costly prepared attack that adapts itself to a specific envisioned target. He proves it against both physical and elemental enemies, then kills the D-grade Thunder Rock in a solo fight. The victory shows him that some D-grades are already within his reach. The Malefic Viper enters the Brimstone Hegemon's realm after the Hegemon refuses the Malefic Order's demand. He overcomes the Hegemon and emerges after the realm is shattered, then clashes with an unnamed god. They agree that their chosen representatives will meet in a future proxy conflict. Caleb, Jake's brother, leads the Court of Shadows in claiming Earth's sixth pylon while carrying a dangerous legacy connected to Umbra. Jacob separately directs a successful pylon battle despite a class that prevents him from fighting personally. Hawkie introduces Jake to his D-grade mate and their egg, which rests within a resource-intensive formation. Jake agrees to hunt the D-grade Storm Elemental whose orb the hawks need. From more than 175 kilometers away, he kills it through repeated target-specific arrows, then recovers its orb from scavenging birds. Meanwhile, Miranda's settlement grows through former members of Abby's force and postpones contact with a much larger nearby fort until Jake can approve the approach.

Story so far - through chapter 34 (this book)

Jake gives the Storm Elemental's orb to Hawkie's mate, whom he names Mystie, and creates another rare orb from the Thunder Rock's remains. The hawks use both resources in their egg ritual, after which they move their nest to Jake's protected valley. Miranda remains in charge of expansion and receives permission to contact the nearby fort. Casper, meanwhile, helps govern a death-affinity pylon settlement of nearly ten thousand undead and others. With Lyra and Priscilla, he prepares a ritual intended to let living people become undead, although he refuses to treat Lyra as an expendable extension of his own power. Miranda's delegation reaches the fort with Jake, Mystie, Neil's team, Lillian, and Mikkel. Phillip distrusts their offer of refuge and initially keeps negotiations at a distance. The fort holds thousands in poor conditions but possesses enchanted firearms, drones, communications equipment, and a capable smithy. During the talks, another large bovine stampede attacks. The fort's defenders finish the attack without Jake intervening. The herd leader's self-destructive behavior and the pattern of repeated assaults lead Jake to suspect that an unknown force may be directing the herds.

Story so far - through chapter 42 (this book)

Jake tracks the source of the fort's repeated attacks and finds the Minotaur Mindchief, a D-grade controller holding about a hundred humans captive. The creature has been sacrificing bovines to strengthen the fort's defenders while cultivating a future D-grade herd leader. It tries to coerce Jake through hostages and mental intrusion. When it enters his deepest memories, it encounters the primal predator within his bloodline, panics, and dies. Its control network collapses, freeing the captives. A final herd attacks the fort, but Mystie's summoned mist beasts and Neil's team help destroy it. Phillip agrees to move his people into Jake's protected settlement while preserving the fort as an outpost. Mikkel remains there to develop modern weapons. Miranda creates a council-like administration, and the settlement receives its permanent name, Haven. Jake reaches class level ninety-nine and accepts a quest requiring both his class and profession to reach the evolution threshold before D-grade. He turns to intensive alchemy, especially a poison intended for the dangerous indigo fungus beneath the valley. Hawkie and Mystie's egg then hatches. Their daughter, Sylphie, rapidly gains her first level, and Jake accepts a close role in helping raise her.

Story so far - through chapter 52 (this book)

Haven expands through commerce, city quests, construction, and new arrivals. Carmen defeats the Slothful Warden and receives her own pylon-related objective elsewhere. Jake advances his profession and studies how to kill the Indigo Fungus Mycorrhiza. His first direct test in its biodome nearly kills him when its tendrils trap him and a mana beam destroys much of his body, but he escapes with a rare lifevine sample. Kenneth arrives with hundreds of followers and seeks a temple that would place Haven's pylon under his god's influence. Jake rejects the proposal, and Kenneth leaves. Miranda then accepts a blessing from the Ladies of the Verdant Lagoon and evolves into a Neophyte Verdant Witch. Hawkie also evolves, becoming a Stormsong Hawk. Using the lifevine and soul-related ingredients, Jake develops an uncommon fungicide designed to spread unnoticed through the fungus. Arnold's timed injectors let him seed the biodome from multiple points. Once the poison weakens and exposes the fungus, Jake destroys its vulnerable soul with specialized arrows. The dead level-105 creature leaves rare lifevines, an epic life core, and the entrance to Under Growth of the Deep Dwellers, a D-grade dungeon that remains locked to him.

Story so far - through chapter 60 (this book)

With the fungus dead, Jake upgrades his poison sense, discovers his personal arcane affinity, and evolves Infused Powershot into a more powerful arcane version. He also develops Touch of the Malefic Viper into a transmutation skill, using it to reshape a cursed scimitar after destroying the souls bound within it. Miranda learns that Villy is the Malefic Viper, but Jake rejects her sudden formality and restores their friendship. Haven may build a shared temple, but neither leader accepts divine control. Jake raises his profession and race to the required levels, kills another Thunder Rock, and begins his race evolution. He rejects a Dragonkin divergence that would conflict with both his human identity and his broader path. Instead he becomes Human D with a perfect evolution, an enhanced bloodline, and greatly expanded perception. The new sensory range initially incapacitates him before he learns to filter it. Sanct Domo is revealed as a Holy Church pylon city of nearly twenty million people, with Jacob as its D-grade spiritual and nominal leader. His class prevents him from fighting. When his council reports Haven as a small northern pylon settlement with a hidden owner and D-grade beasts, Jacob explicitly orders Sanct Domo to leave it alone.

Story so far - through chapter 66 (this book)

Jake chooses Avaricious Arcane Hunter for his D-grade class, preserving his bow, arcane magic, and close-combat ability while refusing a champion path that would make him the Malefic Viper's instrument. New arcane arrows strengthen him enough to defeat Hawkie and Mystie together in a controlled spar. Haven continues developing as a forest city. Felix wins a confidential contract to sculpt statues for its temple, and Neil completes a goods-only teleportation circle between Haven and the fort. The hundredth pylon is claimed, scheduling the First World Congress in seven days. Jake must remain near Haven's pylon to attend and may bring two representatives. For his profession, Jake rejects paths centered on leadership or spreading the Viper's religion. He instead becomes the first recorded Heretic Chosen Alchemist of the Malefic Viper. The choice strengthens their blessing while making it mutually nonrevocable by ordinary means. Jake gains new alchemical abilities and the Path of the Heretic Chosen, which allows him to study episodes from the Viper's legacy. Despite its warning of possible lasting effects, he immediately uses it.

Story so far - through chapter 68 (this book)

Jake's first legacy experience places him within the past of the being who later became the Malefic Viper. As the Wyvern of the Desolates, the Viper uses a disguised alchemist identity and a compromised antitoxin to poison a capital's protector. The wyvern kills the fleeing defender and king, then takes the blue gem powering the city's barrier. It transmutes and refines the treasure through earlier forms of two abilities Jake inherited. Jake returns to the lodge after only minutes outside the experience, but carries enough insight to upgrade Palette of the Malefic Viper to legendary. The skill can hold one natural treasure in a metaphysical stomach, gradually improve it, and teach Jake its properties during refinement. The upgrade advances his profession twice and his race once. He begins testing it on the epic life core taken from the Indigo Fungus Mycorrhiza. Jake closes the book as a Human D, Avaricious Arcane Hunter, and Heretic Chosen Alchemist of the Malefic Viper. Haven remains under Miranda's administration, with the fort as an allied outpost and the hawk family resident nearby. With the World Congress about five and a half days away, Jake postpones the locked dungeon, leaves Sylphie with Hawkie, and sets out to explore the deeper forest.

How does it end? (ending)

Haven is a growing pylon city governed by Miranda under Jake's final authority. Phillip maintains the old fort as an allied outpost, and Neil's teleportation circle carries goods between the two settlements. Hawkie, Mystie, and Sylphie remain powerful resident allies. The Minotaur Mindchief is dead, its captives are free, and its engineered herd attacks have ended. The Indigo Fungus Mycorrhiza is also dead, leaving valuable materials and the locked Under Growth of the Deep Dwellers dungeon. Jake finishes all three D-grade transitions as a Human D, an Avaricious Arcane Hunter, and a Heretic Chosen Alchemist of the Malefic Viper. His blessing is now mutually binding until death or his ascension, although he still rejects championhood and religious subservience. His first legacy experience upgrades Palette of the Malefic Viper to legendary, and he begins refining the fungus life core. Jacob orders Sanct Domo not to interfere with Haven, while Caleb's Court of Shadows and Casper's death-affinity settlement remain active powers. The First World Congress is about five and a half days away when Jake postpones the nearby dungeon and heads into the deeper forest.
