The Queen's Army recap

A prequel short story from Wolf's point of view. Ze'ev Kesley is twelve when Queen Levana's recruiters come to his outer sector and take him for the army, leaving his mother and his younger brother Ran behind. What follows is the training that turns Lunar children into special operatives: packs, ranked by whoever will fight hardest, deliberate cruelty as a teaching method, thaumaturge handlers who can make a recruit do anything, and finally the surgery that fuses a boy with wolf DNA and rebuilds his body around it. Ze'ev survives by learning to do what the programme wants, including things he cannot undo. He ends the story remade, separated from his family, and given the name Wolf.

A note before starting: The Queen's Army is a short prequel to the Lunar Chronicles, also collected in Stars Above, and it is Wolf's backstory. It is best read after Scarlet, the novel that introduces him, because the story assumes you already know what a Lunar special operative is and treats the origin as the point rather than the reveal. Context: Luna is a settled colony on the moon whose people can control what others see and feel. Its queen, Levana, rules through thaumaturges and holds the outer sectors - the mining and manufacturing districts - in poverty while the capital lives in luxury. Children are taken from those sectors for the queen's army, and the families are not asked.

Ze'ev survives the programme by becoming what it is designed to produce. He learns to fight the other recruits without hesitating, accepts the surgery that fuses him with wolf DNA and remakes his body, and rises within the pack hierarchy that the training is built around. The cost is deliberate and permanent: the operatives are separated from their families, conditioned into obedience to their thaumaturge handlers, and left with instincts they cannot switch off. He goes into the story as a boy from an outer sector with a younger brother and a mother, and comes out of it as one of Levana's special operatives, known by the name the pack gives him: Wolf. The programme itself is revealed for what it is, the vanguard of an invasion of Earth being assembled years before anyone on Earth suspects it.
