Trot (Protagonist)

A brave young girl from California who is sailing with Cap'n Bill when a whirlpool draws them into a strange country beneath the sea. Trot faces each new danger with curiosity, good sense, and loyal concern for her companions.

Cap'n Bill (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

Trot's old sailor friend, recognizable by his wooden leg and practical manner. He is protective without underestimating Trot, and his steady courage helps them through the bewildering start of their journey.

The Ork (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 3

A remarkable feathered creature with a long tail and an unusual way of flying. The Ork is resourceful, sociable, and eager to escape the underground cavern in which he meets Trot and Cap'n Bill.

Pessim (Minor)

A gloomy little man living alone on an island. Pessim expects plans to fail and good fortune to turn bad, making him a comical contrast to the travelers' determination.

The Bumpy Man (Minor)

A hospitable resident of a rugged country whose body is covered with bumps. He welcomes the travelers and helps them understand the curious place they have reached.

Button-Bright (Supporting)

A wandering boy already known in Oz for disappearing at inconvenient moments. Trot and her friends find him far from home, cheerful and almost unconcerned about being lost again.

Princess Gloria (Supporting)

The rightful princess of Jinxland. Gloria loves the gardener's boy Pon, but her uncle King Krewl controls the country and refuses to let her choose her own future.

Pon (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 10

A gardener's boy in Jinxland who loves Princess Gloria. Though he has no rank or army, Pon is faithful to her and willing to oppose the king's unjust command.

King Krewl (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 9

Gloria's cruel uncle and the ruler of Jinxland. King Krewl keeps the throne for himself, treats the wishes of his niece as an obstacle, and uses force to preserve his authority.

Googly-Goo (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 11

A wealthy old courtier who wants to marry Gloria and expects the king to arrange it. He is vain, demanding, and willing to benefit from Krewl's harsh rule.

Blinkie (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 11

A witch who lives in Jinxland and lends her magic to King Krewl. Blinkie is feared for her transformations and is prepared to punish anyone who frustrates the king's plans.

The Scarecrow (Protagonist)

First appears in chapter 13

The straw-stuffed friend of Dorothy and ruler of the Winkie Country in the Tin Woodman's absence. Glinda sends him toward Jinxland, where his cheerful cleverness is needed against a wicked ruler and a witch.

Glinda the Good (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 13

The powerful and benevolent sorceress of the Quadling Country. From her palace, Glinda learns that distant travelers are in trouble and sends the Scarecrow to assist them.

Ozma (Supporting)

The young fairy ruler of Oz, living in the Emerald City with Dorothy and many friends gathered during earlier adventures.
