In short (whole book)

A whirlpool carries Trot and Cap'n Bill into an underground adventure, where they befriend the strange flying Ork and eventually reach the borderlands of Oz. Joined by the often-lost Button-Bright, they enter Jinxland and learn that cruel King Krewl has used the witch Blinkie to freeze Princess Gloria's heart and separate her from Pon. Glinda sends the Scarecrow to help. After transformations, captures, and a struggle with Krewl's forces, the Scarecrow's party and the Ork outwit their enemies, make Blinkie reverse her spells, and place Gloria on the throne with Pon. Glinda helps the travelers cross into Oz proper, and Ozma welcomes Trot and Cap'n Bill to live in the Emerald City with Dorothy and their friends.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Oz is a fairyland ruled by Ozma from the Emerald City. Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and many other friends live in its four great countries, while Glinda the Good watches over the south. Trot and Cap'n Bill begin this story outside Oz and do not need to know its earlier adventures.

Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)

Trot and Cap'n Bill are sailing off the California coast when a great whirlpool swallows their boat. They survive in a cavern beneath the sea and meet an Ork, an extraordinary birdlike creature who has also been trapped. Working together, the three discover a route upward and return to daylight. Their escape brings them to a lonely island inhabited by Pessim, a little man who expects the worst from everything. The Ork learns that some berries can change the size of living creatures, giving the party a way to continue its journey, but the travelers are still far from home and do not yet know that their path is leading toward Oz.

Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)

After leaving Pessim's island, Trot and Cap'n Bill travel through a strange, hilly land, meet the friendly Bumpy Man, and are reunited with Button-Bright, a boy who has once again wandered away from his friends in Oz. They reach Jinxland, a secluded corner of the Quadling Country ruled by the cruel King Krewl. The rightful princess, Gloria, loves Pon, a gardener's boy, but Krewl wants her to marry the rich and pompous Googly-Goo. When Gloria refuses, the king turns to the witch Blinkie. Her magic freezes Gloria's heart, leaving the princess unable to care for Pon, while Trot and her companions realize that they have entered a country where the ruler uses enchantment to enforce his will.

Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)

Glinda learns of the trouble and sends the Scarecrow to Jinxland. He meets Trot and Cap'n Bill and agrees to oppose Krewl, while Pon calls upon the king to surrender the stolen throne. Krewl answers with soldiers and Blinkie's magic. Cap'n Bill is transformed into a grasshopper with a wooden leg, and Button-Bright is separated from the others, but the Ork returns and helps rescue him. The Scarecrow cannot be frightened or easily destroyed, even when Krewl's side attacks his straw body. The friends survive these attacks, and their scattered allies work toward a final effort to free Gloria and Jinxland.

Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)

The Scarecrow's party overcomes Blinkie, and the witch is compelled to reverse her enchantments. Cap'n Bill becomes himself again, Gloria's frozen heart is restored, and her love for Pon returns. King Krewl and Googly-Goo are stripped of their power, while Gloria is crowned the rightful queen of Jinxland with Pon beside her. The travelers then continue toward the heart of Oz, but a terrible waterfall blocks the way. Glinda's magic saves them and carries them safely into the Land of Oz. In the Emerald City, Ozma, Dorothy, Betsy, and their companions give Trot and Cap'n Bill a royal welcome. Ozma offers the two wanderers a permanent home in her peaceful fairyland, and they gladly accept, ending their long journey among friends.

How does it end? (ending)

The Scarecrow and his friends defeat King Krewl's soldiers without bloodshed and force Blinkie to undo her magic. Cap'n Bill regains his proper form, and Gloria's frozen heart is restored so that she can love Pon again. Krewl and Googly-Goo lose their power, Gloria becomes queen of Jinxland, and Pon stands beside her. Glinda's magic then carries the travelers safely over the deadly waterfall and into the settled Land of Oz. Trot and Cap'n Bill are warmly received in the Emerald City by Ozma, Dorothy, Betsy, and the rest of the court. Ozma invites them to make their home in Oz, where neither age nor death need part them. They accept, turning their accidental voyage into a permanent place among their new friends.
