In short (whole book)
After rescuing Wulfgar from six years in Errtu's hands, the Companions of the Hall carry the recovered Crystal Shard south to Cadderly's Spirit Soaring in hopes of destroying it. Wulfgar travels with them but cannot settle back into his former life: captivity has left him with nightmares, sudden violence and a painful awareness that Drizzt and Catti-brie became partners while he was gone. In Calimport, Jarlaxle restores the dispirited Artemis Entreri to the city's underworld, where the assassin infiltrates the Basadoni guild and rises through calculated killings. Crenshinibon senses Jarlaxle's ambition and draws Bregan D'aerthe toward it. Cadderly's attempt to end the artifact fails, and Jarlaxle's agents steal it, leaving the mercenary leader under its growing influence. Drizzt and Entreri meet again without resolving the emptiness driving the assassin; both live. Wulfgar finally leaves his friends and goes to Luskan, choosing distance over an impossible return to the man he was.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Drizzt Do'Urden found a family in Bruenor Battlehammer, Catti-brie, Wulfgar and Regis. They defeated Akar Kessell and Crenshinibon, the Crystal Shard, which disappeared beneath an avalanche, and later reclaimed Mithral Hall. Wulfgar was believed killed while saving his friends from a demonic servant of the Spider Queen. During the six years that followed, Drizzt and Catti-brie built a life together. The demon Errtu had actually taken Wulfgar and subjected him to prolonged torment. When the companions defeated Errtu again, they freed Wulfgar and returned Aegis-fang to him. They also recovered Crenshinibon, which had returned from the ice into Errtu's possession. The company is reunited and Wulfgar is physically free, but he comes home traumatized, unsure of his place and unable simply to restore his former relationship with Catti-brie. The artifact once thought lost must now be dealt with again.
Story so far - through chapter 4 (this book)
Wulfgar is back among the Companions of the Hall, but Mithral Hall feels unfamiliar after six years in Errtu's prison. He suffers nightmares and reacts to ordinary confinement or concern as though it were another attempt to control him. Bruenor wants to welcome his foster son home, while Catti-brie and Drizzt try not to force him into the relationship and role he held before his disappearance. Their caution cannot conceal that they became a couple while they believed him dead. The companions also face a danger outside the family: Crenshinibon has been recovered from Errtu. Because hiding the sentient artifact only gives it time to find another bearer, they plan to carry it south to Cadderly at the Spirit Soaring and seek a permanent means of destroying it. Elsewhere, Jarlaxle summons Artemis Entreri. The assassin has survived his years around the drow but has lost confidence in the rivalry that once defined him, and Jarlaxle proposes a return to Calimport.
Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)
The companions leave the north with Crenshinibon secured as carefully as they can manage, beginning a long journey toward the Spirit Soaring. The road gives Wulfgar no relief from his memories. He can fight beside his friends, yet their attempts at kindness often sharpen his shame, and the easy coordination between Drizzt and Catti-brie reminds him that time continued while he was imprisoned. In Calimport, Jarlaxle and Entreri begin building a surface position for Bregan D'aerthe. Dwahvel Tiggerwillies helps Entreri read the changed criminal landscape and approach the Basadoni organization. Entreri suppresses his reputation enough to enter as a useful killer rather than an obvious conqueror. Jarlaxle lets him operate visibly while the drow mercenaries provide concealed advantages, intending to take control of established networks instead of creating a guild from nothing.
Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)
Entreri earns Pasha Basadoni's approval by defeating threats to the guild and demonstrating that his loyalty appears more profitable than his death. Each success moves him upward while secretly extending Jarlaxle's control. The work returns the assassin to familiar streets and methods, but revenge and reputation bring less satisfaction than he expected. His victories leave intact the question that has followed him since Drizzt survived their earlier contests: whether skill alone can give his life meaning. Jarlaxle treats that dissatisfaction as something he can direct. On the companions' journey, Wulfgar's strength remains undiminished but his judgment is increasingly shaped by sleeplessness, anger and the need to prove that he requires no protection. Drizzt recognizes the pattern without knowing how to interrupt it. The group remains committed to reaching Cadderly, since every delay leaves the Crystal Shard close enough to exploit fear, ambition or division.
Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)
Entreri's position in the Basadoni guild becomes a foundation for Bregan D'aerthe's Calimport operation. The drow combine psionics, magic and the assassin's local credibility, removing rivals while keeping their own presence uncertain. Then Crenshinibon reaches beyond its physical prison. The shard senses Jarlaxle's appetite for power and calls to the mercenary network, offering the prospect of a tool that can turn hidden influence into a kingdom. Kimmuriel Oblodra's mental gifts help the drow understand and follow that call. Jarlaxle becomes interested before he has seen the artifact, believing he can master a device that has ruined every previous bearer. The companions continue south unaware that their cargo has attracted precisely the kind of ambitious claimant they hoped to prevent. Wulfgar increasingly sees separation from the group as the only way to discover whether any part of his life belongs to him rather than to Errtu, his old reputation or his friends' expectations.
Story so far - through chapter 19 (this book)
The companions reach the Spirit Soaring and place Crenshinibon before Cadderly. His divine knowledge confirms the scale of the danger, but the shard resists the available attempts to destroy it. Containment at the library is only a temporary answer, especially now that Jarlaxle's agents have traced its call. Bregan D'aerthe uses stealth, magic and psionics to penetrate defenses designed for more direct enemies and carries the artifact away before Cadderly can end it. The mission has therefore moved the shard south without removing its threat. At the same time, Wulfgar admits through his actions that traveling with the old company is not healing him. Affection has become entangled with pity, memory and the place he expected to have beside Catti-brie. Rather than continue performing the role of the returned hero, he separates from Drizzt, Bruenor, Regis and Catti-brie and turns toward Luskan, still armed with Aegis-fang but without a plan beyond being alone.
Story so far - through chapter 23 (this book)
Jarlaxle takes possession of Crenshinibon and begins imagining what its power could add to the criminal empire Bregan D'aerthe has built in Calimport. He believes his experience and resources will let him use the shard without becoming its servant, while the artifact encourages exactly that confidence. Entreri has risen within the Basadoni structure and again crosses paths with Drizzt. Their renewed contest proves that neither past victories nor another duel can settle the deeper difference between them. Both survive, and Entreri remains with Jarlaxle rather than finding a new purpose in defeating his rival. Drizzt is left knowing that the artifact his friends carried across the realms is still active and now protected by a powerful drow company. Wulfgar, meanwhile, reaches Luskan alone. He turns toward drink, tavern fights and dangerous work to silence memories of Errtu. Leaving his family gives him control over his direction, but it also removes the people most willing to keep him from destroying himself. The companions end the book divided, and the Crystal Shard has returned to the world as a growing threat.
How does it end? (ending)
Cadderly cannot permanently destroy Crenshinibon before Jarlaxle's agents take it from the Spirit Soaring. The shard begins working on Jarlaxle's ambition, giving the drow mercenary a new source of power and leaving the artifact in dangerous hands. In Calimport, Artemis Entreri has climbed through the Basadoni guild and helped Bregan D'aerthe establish a surface empire, but achievement and another clash with Drizzt do not supply the certainty he expected. Drizzt and Entreri both survive their renewed contest, and Jarlaxle keeps Entreri close as the drow withdraws with the shard. The companions therefore fail in the mission that brought them south. More personally, Wulfgar accepts that he cannot recover by resuming his old place beside Catti-brie and Drizzt. He separates from the companions and goes to Luskan, where drink and violence offer temporary escape from his memories. His family remains willing to help, but he begins the next stage of his life alone, carrying Aegis-fang and the unresolved effects of Errtu's imprisonment.
