In short (whole book)

The reunited Companions of the Hall travel north and discover that increasingly bold orc attacks form part of a planned invasion. King Obould Many-Arrows has united tribes, gained frost giant support under Gerti Orelsdottr and benefited from drow agents who want the surface powers at war. Drizzt scouts beyond the company while Bruenor, Catti-brie, Regis and Wulfgar help threatened communities resist. Mirabar's divided leadership delays a common response, but Shoudra Stargleam, Torgar Hammerstriker and Nanfoodle join the widening defense. Obould's numbers and giant strength isolate the companions around Shallows. When the defenders' tower is destroyed, Drizzt sees the collapse from outside and believes Bruenor, Catti-brie and Regis have been killed. They have actually survived the fall, as have Wulfgar, Delly and Colson elsewhere, but cannot tell him. Obould advances toward Mithral Hall while the grief-stricken ranger turns to a solitary war of revenge.

Story so far - through chapter 5 (this book)

Drizzt, Catti-brie, Bruenor, Regis and Wulfgar are together again after Wulfgar's long separation, though reunion has not restored the old relationships unchanged. Wulfgar now travels with Delly Curtie and the child Colson, accepting a partner's and father's responsibilities alongside Aegis-fang. On the road north, the company finds signs of unusually coordinated orc activity: attacks are larger, scouts are disciplined and routes normally safe for caravans have become dangerous. Drizzt ranges ahead to read the enemy's movement while Bruenor treats every endangered traveler and settlement as part of the same problem. The evidence begins to suggest that the raiders are testing defenses rather than simply stealing what they can carry. Beyond the companions' view, King Obould Many-Arrows is gathering tribes beneath one command and offering them a campaign capable of changing who controls the northern frontier.

Story so far - through chapter 10 (this book)

The companions' northward journey becomes a moving defense of roads and settlements as they encounter the edges of Obould's mobilization. The orc king has secured support from Gerti Orelsdottr's frost giants, giving his army siege power and mobility that the region's usual patrols are not prepared to meet. Drow agents, including Kaer'lic and Tos'un, remain concealed within the coalition and encourage its aggression for purposes Obould does not fully control. Mirabar has soldiers and wealth enough to matter, but its human authorities and shield dwarves disagree over how far their obligations extend beyond the city's immediate interests. Sceptrana Shoudra Stargleam sees a regional danger, while Torgar Hammerstriker and other dwarves respond strongly to Bruenor's insistence that delay will leave every community isolated in turn. Nanfoodle Buswilligan begins considering what alchemy and engineering can contribute against enemies too numerous for ordinary tactics.

Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)

Obould's host spreads across the frontier in separate forces that can destroy small defenses before neighboring powers agree to help. Drizzt and Catti-brie repeatedly strike at scouts and raiders, but each local success reveals more enemies behind the first line. Bruenor tries to turn shared danger into cooperation among settlements, Mirabarran soldiers and his own companions. Torgar's respect for Bruenor deepens as official caution becomes harder to defend, and Shoudra works to keep military necessity from becoming a complete political break within Mirabar. Wulfgar fights beside the family he once left while Delly and Colson remind him that survival, not glory, is the measure that matters now. Obould presents each victory as proof that the many tribes can win lasting land under his rule. Gerti's giants remain decisive, and the hidden drow continue to profit from an alliance whose members believe they are using one another.

Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)

The war reaches communities that cannot simply move out of Obould's path. Bruenor and his allies organize resistance while Drizzt scouts and attacks beyond the fixed defenses, forcing the companions to operate at increasing distance from one another. The enemy's size makes even a successful stand temporary: orcs can replace losses, giants can batter fortifications, and hidden advisers help direct pressure toward weak points. Mirabar's internal dispute produces real consequences as dwarf warriors choose active defense of the region over narrow obedience to officials who still hope the danger can be contained elsewhere. Shoudra and Nanfoodle attach their abilities to the field effort, adding magic and invention to Bruenor's fighters. Obould, meanwhile, is no longer merely assembling followers. He is learning to act as the ruler of a conquering people and to turn victories into loyalty, even as Gerti and the drow retain plans that do not depend on his long-term success.

Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)

Around Shallows, the companions and their allies are forced into a concentrated defense against an army that can surround the position and bring giants against its strongest structures. Drizzt works outside the central fortifications, cutting at the host and searching for a way to relieve pressure. Inside, Bruenor, Catti-brie and Regis help hold frightened defenders together while every retreat narrows the space left to them. Wulfgar's obligations divide his attention between the battle and keeping Delly and Colson from being swallowed by it. Obould's commanders accept heavy losses because the destruction of a visible stronghold will demonstrate that resistance is futile. The drow agents continue shaping events without exposing themselves as the campaign's authors, and Gerti's giants prepare to supply the force that orc numbers alone cannot. By the time Drizzt recognizes the final danger to the tower, enemy lines and the collapsing defense have cut him off from the friends within.

Story so far - through chapter 29 (this book)

Obould's army breaks the defense of Shallows. Giant strength brings down the tower where Bruenor, Catti-brie and Regis made their stand, and Drizzt witnesses the destruction from outside the enemy lines. Unable to reach the ruin or find evidence of escape, he believes all three have died. In fact, they survive the apparent collapse and escape by a route hidden from him. Wulfgar, Delly and Colson also remain alive, but the scattered companions cannot reach Drizzt before grief turns him away. He abandons the restraint and shared purpose that normally define his fighting and begins treating every orc in Obould's host as an object of vengeance. The invasion has achieved more than a battlefield victory: northern forces are divided, Mithral Hall lies in its path and its most dangerous ranger now acts without reliable knowledge or allies. Obould advances with his orcs, Gerti's giants and the secret drow faction still joined in an unstable coalition, while Drizzt enters the wilderness convinced that the family he fought for is gone.

How does it end? (ending)

Obould's combined orc and giant army overwhelms the defenses around Shallows and destroys the tower in which Bruenor, Catti-brie and Regis have been fighting. Drizzt, cut off outside, sees the ruin and concludes that his closest friends died beneath it. He leaves without learning that they escaped the apparent destruction and remain alive. The mistaken loss drives him away from cooperation and toward a solitary campaign of vengeance. Wulfgar, Delly and Colson are also alive, but the companions are scattered as the invasion rolls onward. Obould has proved that his host is not merely a large raiding band: it can defeat fortified positions, exploit divisions among the northern settlements and threaten Mithral Hall itself. Gerti's giants and the hidden drow advisers remain dangerous partners rather than loyal subjects, while Mirabar's dwarf soldiers and Shoudra have committed themselves more directly to the regional fight. The book closes with the war widening, the surviving companions unable to reach Drizzt, and Drizzt entering the next stage of the conflict under the false belief that he has nothing left to protect.
