In short (whole book)
Selys and Krshia begin a campaign for elections and expansion in Liscor, while the Horns of Hammerad overcome hostility and Ksmvr proves his value by defeating a bandit camp. On Baleros, the United Nations Company builds alliances, expands Geneva's clinic, and secretly develops explosives. Niers Astoragon then makes his students' Dakin examination a public contest against Tulm and the Iron Vanguard. Luan breaches the blockade, Will brings a hidden relief army, and Umina wins by tunneling into Niers's goal circle during the final assault. Later events connect Geneva to Niers's academy, place Ryoka amid attacks on Magnolia Reinhart's allies, and return attention to Liscor. There, the Free Antinium back Krshia's development plan while Olesm joins a rival anti-Antinium campaign. Erin uses her inn, magic door, prominent visitors, and an Antinium building demonstration to improve Krshia's prospects, but the election remains unresolved.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Erin established the Wandering Inn outside Liscor and made it a refuge for people whom the city's divisions often kept apart. Her circle came to include Drakes, Gnolls, Antinium, adventurers, and Goblins. The inn's magic door created links beyond Liscor, while Erin took responsibility for the young Gnoll Mrsha. The Horns of Hammerad were destroyed in the dungeon beneath Liscor and later re-formed. The loss left lasting injuries, grief, and disputed reputations. Selys became the owner of the Heartflame breastplate, a valuable relic recovered from the dungeon. The Free Antinium developed individuals and institutions beyond the hive's older designs, even as Liscor and its army continued to fear Antinium power. Far away on Baleros, people transported from Earth organized the United Nations Company around survival, medicine, and shared resources.
Story so far - through chapter 4 (this book)
Selys receives a fortune from the Heartflame breastplate and discovers that sudden wealth strains several friendships. Guided by her grandmother, she chooses to remain at the Adventurers' Guild and use her money deliberately. Krshia recruits her into a movement for an elected Liscor council, city expansion, stronger funding for the Watch and guild, and Gnoll representation. Zevara offers conditional support, while the coalition still needs wider political backing. The Horns of Hammerad, meanwhile, plan to pursue Gold-rank through work and travel. Their first local contract collapses into a brawl when other adventurers accuse Ceria and Yvlon Byres of abandoning their former teams. Ceria, Yvlon, and Pisces are jailed, but Ksmvr avoids arrest by falsely claiming protected Antinium rank. Trying to prove that he belongs with the Horns, he attacks the bandit camp alone, with remote aid from Pisces's undead. Ksmvr defeats the camp, earns the enlarged bounty, and reaches level 20. The victory reunites the team and demonstrates his worth, but hostility toward the Horns and interest from people seeking Pisces force them to leave the city.
Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)
On Baleros, Dally's Bushrangers cooperate successfully with local Dullahan adventurers against giant serpents, giving the United Nations Company a useful alliance and income. Geneva's clinic draws growing demand and official scrutiny. A distinct presence sharing her body secretly takes control and impersonates her during an interview with the company governing the city. Luan's tattoos preserve his family's names as memories of Earth become harder to access. Paige and Dally secretly approve a very limited supply of gunpowder bombs for monster contracts, creating a dangerous project hidden from the company's other leaders. Luan also accepts a valuable delivery linked to a strategist's school. That school is run by Niers Astoragon, the Titan of Baleros, who teaches through realistic exercises built around concealment, misdirection, and painful failure. Niers announces a recurring examination in Dakin in which students may use nonlethal traps, alliances, and magic while evading a large hunting force. The winner earns a truthful answer to any question. Umina and Marion agree to compete together, Vanaz wants the prize, and Will conceals a risky plan of his own. The examination is imminent, but the expected former student who will direct the hunt has not been identified.
Story so far - through chapter 9 (this book)
The Dakin game becomes a worldwide magical broadcast. Tulm locks down the city with the Iron Vanguard, counters common forms of concealment, and deploys elite fighters around Niers Astoragon's goal circle. Luan arrives without understanding the contest, breaks through a six-ship blockade in his small boat, and delivers his bag to Vanaz. Elsewhere near the harbor, Umina and Marion gather information from a ship's crew rather than immediately attempting to reach the plaza. Across the city, students shift from hiding to coordinated resistance, but Tulm uses screamer dust and Cold Iron Mists to expose them and suppress weaker magic. The balance changes when four transports ram the harbor blockade. They carry Will's sister, the Order of Seasons, storm sailors, and family forces secretly summoned as part of Will's plan. The army accepts Will's field command and begins pushing toward the plaza under nonlethal rules. His logistical preparation turns the examination into a citywide battle. Although the route to Niers remains heavily defended, Will now holds the harbor, the students have organized into fighting groups, and Tulm must contain both the hidden competitors and an advancing relief force.
Story so far - through chapter 11 (this book)
Will directs his relief force through Dakin while Umina, Marion, Vanaz, and Luan move behind the Iron Vanguard's lines. Vanaz defeats a patrol, and Luan helps the group use cheap distractions, paid cooperation, and a staged-casualty ruse to preserve a route toward the plaza. Tulm still contains the wider assault with armored companies and a towering war walker. Students attempt several inventive breaches, but the Iron Vanguard captures or scatters them before they can enter Niers Astoragon's circle. Umina separates from her allies to pursue an independent approach. Vanaz, Marion, and Luan then join the visible final push. A Gnoll student rallies Dakin's residents against the occupiers, while Luan delays the war walker by surrounding it with children whom it refuses to endanger. Vanaz reaches Tulm but cannot overcome the commander's extraordinary strength, and Marion is stopped close to the goal. Their offensive nevertheless supplies the diversion Umina needs. She has arranged a tunnel from a nearby waste pit and emerges inside Niers's roped circle. The direct assault fails to defeat Tulm, but Umina reaches the objective through infiltration while the Iron Vanguard is focused on the battle above.
How does it end? (ending)
Umina is formally recognized as the winner of Niers Astoragon's Dakin game, receiving a prize from his vault and the right to ask him one question. Will also earns a question for the relief force he secretly organized. Marion survives a serious burn and partly reconciles with Umina, while Luan's conduct creates both a possible connection between Geneva and Perorn and a nonlethal threat against his boat. Niers's concealed reason for staging the game remains unresolved. Elsewhere, the Horns stay together but move on under local suspicion, and the United Nations Company gains allies while remaining poor, watched, and internally divided over secret explosives. Ryoka's courier work helps reveal a coordinated campaign against Magnolia Reinhart's circle, which Magnolia answers with economic warfare. In Liscor, Krshia's election and Antinium-backed expansion remain undecided. Olesm supports a rival plan that rejects hive involvement, while Erin's cross-city gathering improves Krshia's position. The event also displays Antinium construction, strengthens the inn's commercial role, and leaves the political vote, the imprisoned Minotaur's condition, and the Free Antinium's future open.
