The vampire who narrates this book, telling his own life story in his own voice after rising from decades of dormancy into the modern age, where he reinvents himself as a flamboyant rock star and sets out to reveal the secret history of his kind. Bold, defiant, sensual, and hungry for life and attention, he recounts his origins as a rebellious young nobleman in eighteenth-century France and his transformation into a vampire. Where the earlier book's narrator was mournful, Lestat is fierce and unrepentant, determined to be seen and to make his own meaning out of immortality.

Lestat's mother, a proud, remote noblewoman trapped in a crumbling provincial estate and a disappointing marriage, gravely ill and closer to her restless son than to anyone else. An ancient, gaunt, and monstrous vampire who abducts the young Lestat in Paris and forces the dark gift upon him, transforming him into a vampire. Powerful, secretive, and driven by his own mysterious ends, Magnus sets Lestat on his immortal path before withdrawing from it, leaving his new fledgling suddenly alone with his changed nature and a great inheritance.

An ancient vampire with the deceptive appearance of a youth, who leads an old coven of vampires clinging to rigid, superstitious beliefs about what their kind may and may not do.
