Lestat, awakening in the 1980s after decades underground, becomes a rock star and writes his own life story to tell his side, deliberately breaking the vampires' secret. He recounts his origins as a rebellious young nobleman in eighteenth-century France who flees to Paris with his friend Nicolas, only to be seized and transformed into a vampire by the ancient Magnus, who then destroys himself and leaves Lestat his fortune. Grieving and newly immortal, Lestat gives the dark gift to his dying mother, Gabrielle, and later to Nicolas, and he clashes with an old coven of vampires, led by Armand, who cling to superstitions he rejects. Restless for the origins of his kind, Lestat seeks out the ancient Marius, who reveals the deepest secret of the vampires: the primeval king and queen from whom all vampires descend, kept for thousands of years as living statues. Lestat's contact with the queen stirs something long dormant. In the modern present, his defiant public performance enrages other vampires who want him destroyed, and as the book closes the ancient queen awakens and takes Lestat with her.

Previously in this series: in the first book, the vampire Louis told a modern interviewer the sorrowful story of his life. Made a vampire in eighteenth-century Louisiana by the charismatic Lestat, Louis was tormented by his surviving conscience and by the killing his nature demanded. To bind Louis to him, Lestat transformed a small orphaned girl, Claudia, and the three lived as an unnatural family until Claudia, her adult mind trapped forever in a child's body, turned against Lestat and, with Louis, tried to destroy him. Believing Lestat dead, Louis and Claudia fled to Europe and found a coven of vampires in Paris led by the ancient Armand; there the coven punished Claudia for the attack on her maker by destroying her in sunlight. Louis avenged her by burning the coven and drifted on, hollowed out. This second book turns the perspective around, giving Lestat his own voice to tell his origins and his side of the story, reaching back long before Louis and forward into the modern age.

Lestat's account converges on the modern day, where his rock concert in San Francisco becomes a lightning rod: legions of his own kind, furious that he has exposed their existence to the human world, gather to destroy him, while an unseen force begins annihilating vampires around the globe. In the depths of his story, Lestat had learned the oldest secret of all from the ancient vampire Marius, that every vampire descends from a primeval Egyptian king and queen who have sat for millennia like statues, kept safe and hidden, and that Lestat's reckless contact with the queen had stirred her after her endless silence. Now that queen, Akasha, awakens fully, roused by Lestat's music and audacity. As the concert's chaos subsides and the surviving vampires reel from the mysterious destruction sweeping their ranks, Akasha comes to Lestat and lifts him away with her, choosing him for a purpose not yet revealed. The book ends on that abduction, leaving the awakened ancient queen, her intentions unknown, and Lestat in her power, with the fate of every vampire and the wider world suddenly hanging in the balance.
