The Vor Game

By Lois McMaster Bujold

Freshly graduated from the Imperial Military Academy, Miles Vorkosigan is assigned as chief meteorology officer at a remote winter-training base, a posting meant to test whether he can work within a chain of command before earning a coveted ship assignment. Miles clashes with the base's hostile commander, survives a near-fatal accident in the field, and quietly looks into a death that turns out to have an innocent explanation, all while proving unexpectedly skilled at predicting the base's dangerous local weather. When a toxic-waste accident escalates into a standoff over the safety of enlisted technicians, Miles's intervention draws the attention of Imperial Security, and he is taken into custody on a serious accusation partway through his assignment.
