Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Miles Vorkosigan (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

A newly graduated Barrayaran ensign and the disabled Vorkosigan heir. His first posting makes him weather officer at Lazkowski Base, where six successful months could earn consideration for ship duty and test whether he can serve effectively within an ordinary chain of command.

Gregor Vorbarra (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The young Emperor of Barrayar and a childhood associate of Miles. His office limits his personal freedom and places unusual political weight on his choices.

Count Vorkosigan (Supporting)

Miles's father and the Prime Minister of Barrayar. His family position and public office place him at the center of both household and imperial affairs.

Cordelia Vorkosigan (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Miles's Betan-born mother and a returning member of the Vorkosigan family.

Simon Illyan (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The Chief of Imperial Security, responsible for the organization that handles sensitive threats to Barrayar.

Ivan Vorpatril (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Miles's cousin, assigned to an operations post at Imperial Headquarters in Vorbarr Sultana.

Major Cecil (Minor)

Appears from the start

An Academy personnel officer who deliberately sends Miles to Kyril Island as a test of discipline and cooperation. He offers to support a later transfer to ship duty if Miles completes six months successfully.

Outgoing Weather Officer (Minor)

Appears from the start

The retiring weather officer at Lazkowski Base, where he has served for fifteen years. His drinking leaves him unable to brief Miles when the new officer first reports for duty.

Metzov (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 3

The combat-decorated commander of Lazkowski Base. He is openly contemptuous of Miles and assigns him punitive engineering work after the bog incident.

Lieutenant Bonn (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 3

A capable engineering officer at Lazkowski Base. He recovers Miles's lost vehicle and discreetly reports that a motor-pool technician boasted about arranging the incident.

Captain Ungari (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 7

An Imperial Security operative specializing in military assessment beyond Barrayar. He commands the investigation of the Hagen Hub and has authority to decide whether Miles's mercenary identity should be used.

Sergeant Overholt (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 9

An Imperial Security operative assigned to accompany Miles after Captain Ungari leaves unexpectedly. He attempts to intervene when Consortium security arrests Miles.

Elena Bothari-Jesek (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A trusted former Barrayaran associate of Miles and an experienced Dendarii commander. She remains oath-sworn to him while serving in a mercenary force now controlled by Oser.

Baz Jesek (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The Dendarii fleet engineering officer, Elena's husband, and one of Miles's oath-sworn allies. Oser's financial takeover has reduced his authority within the organization.

Arde Mayhew (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A Dendarii jump pilot and one of Miles's oath-sworn armsmen. His established loyalty makes him part of Miles's trusted circle beyond Barrayar.

Ky Tung (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 11

A senior Dendarii tactical officer who can rally more than a hundred personnel and four ships against Oser. He wants the fleet restored but refuses to start a destructive internal war without a viable way to reunify it.

Oser (Antagonist)

Appears from the start

The commander who controls the former Dendarii after a financial reorganization. He regards Admiral Naismith as a threat and has displaced several of Miles's established allies from authority.

Sergeant Chodak (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 8

A former Dendarii combat noncommissioned officer now serving under Oser. He recognizes Admiral Naismith, remains personally respectful toward him, and warns that Oser is hostile.

Liga (Minor)

First appears in chapter 8

The murder victim found at Paul Station 6 shortly after Victor Rotha's arms meeting. The death leads Paulian authorities to issue an arrest order against Rotha, forcing his party to flee.

Cavilo (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 9

The person who purchases the Consortium warrant for Victor Rotha's arrest and offers payment for his detention. Her purpose is not yet known when Miles learns her name.

Captain Orson (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 14

Captain of the Dendarii flagship Triumph. He enters a forced command settlement that preserves his captaincy while restoring Ky Tung to tactical leadership.

Admiral Naismith (Protagonist)

First appears in chapter 7

Miles Vorkosigan's established mercenary command persona. Imperial Security permits Miles to revive this identity during the Hagen Hub investigation if Captain Ungari considers it useful.

Victor Rotha (Protagonist)

First appears in chapter 8

The arms-dealer identity used by Miles Vorkosigan at Paul Station 6. He poses as a supplier of advanced defensive technology while serving as conspicuous cover for Captain Ungari's survey.

Greg Bleakman (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 9

The laborer's name used by Gregor Vorbarra after fleeing Barrayar. Miles encounters him in detention while he is being sent toward Aslund as contract labor.
