In short (whole book)
Ryoka earns the name Windrunner through dangerous deliveries, befriends a hidden family of living vampires, and agrees to protect their secret while they search for missing Earth arrivals. In Liscor, Erin reopens her inn after the Goblins' deaths, recognizes Numbtongue as family, and leaves Lyonette to manage their growing home. Numbtongue inherits Pyrite's memories and hazardous mining knowledge. The United Nations Company rescues stranded Earth arrivals and wins allies through adventuring and Geneva's medicine, but remains poor, traumatized, and threatened by hostile Earth humans, fading memories, and Niers's secret inquiry. Ilvriss confirms that Az'kerash lives and begins a covert investigation. Flos adds Germina and Helios to Rhyme, expands weapons production, and demands safe passage for anyone claiming his allegiance. Nine nations then declare war on the Empress of Beasts. Afterward, visiting adventuring teams leave Erin's inn, while Ceria's Horns remain and resolve to pursue gold rank.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Erin Solstice established the Wandering Inn near Liscor as a refuge whose guests cross ordinary boundaries of species and allegiance. Lyonette helps run the inn and care for Mrsha, a young mute Gnoll, while Redfang Goblins including Numbtongue became part of its community. The struggle around Liscor ended with Goblins dying in the city's defense, leaving Erin and the survivors in grief. Ceria Springwalker leads the rebuilt Horns of Hammerad, but the team's former captain Calruz remains imprisoned after the dungeon disaster. Wall Lord Ilvriss has become an ally in Liscor, while the necromancer Az'kerash remains a concealed threat. Elsewhere, Earth arrivals have been scattered across the world. Ryoka Griffin works as a classless runner, and a mixed group of other arrivals and local allies has begun forming the United Nations Company.
Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)
Ryoka's northern work earns her the name Windrunner. She rescues the trapped Pithfire Hounds, then discovers that a Raismelt broker belongs to a hidden family of living vampires. The family cannot compel her silence, but she promises it freely after learning that they survive on animal blood and suffer a worsening inherited illness or curse. Ryoka and the young vampire become friends, and Ryoka asks her to search for Rose, Imani, and Joseph. At the Wandering Inn, Erin's grief initially shuts out Liscor. Numbtongue openly challenges the city's treatment of the Goblins who defended it, buries Pyrite, and begins receiving the dead Goblin's memories. Erin names Lyonette, Mrsha, Numbtongue, and Bird as family, reopens the inn, and prepares to travel while Lyonette takes charge. Numbtongue gains public recognition as an adventurer and chooses the inn as his home. The United Nations Company is nearly out of money. Dally's Bush Rangers become its main adventuring income, rescue four starving Earth arrivals, and learn that other Earth humans attacked them. Geneva returns to treat the newcomers. When giant serpents escape a dungeon, Dally delays them and Ken mobilizes local forces. Geneva then saves a centaur mother and child through emergency surgery. These successes win goodwill and an alliance with the indebted Rustless Guard, but the company remains financially fragile.
Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)
The United Nations Company searches for a sustainable future. Geneva considers a clinic and develops uncertain antibacterial treatment, while Paige confirms she can make gunpowder and the group secretly plans nonmagical grenades. Aiko and Luan recognize that Earthworlders are losing memories of their families. Luan tattoos his wife and son's names on his arm, continues earning money as a water courier, and accepts a covert delivery connected to the Titan's recurring game. Niers Astoragon examines Earth devices, concludes that another world's people are present, and opens a private investigation. Lyonette expands her control of the Wandering Inn, negotiates restitution for her old crimes, teaches Mrsha more signs, and strengthens her bond with an ashfire bee. Erin visits another walled city through the magical door, where she finds a concealed visitor fee and a law that would kill Numbtongue if he entered. Sympathetic tradespeople begin challenging the fee. Numbtongue uses Pyrite's inherited mining knowledge to find mana stone and magicore, but his music transforms the material into an unstable electrical hazard. Ceria visits Calruz in prison. He accepts responsibility for his actions and continues mapping the dungeon while expecting execution.
Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)
Flos enters Germina's succession ritual as the required foreign witness and protects its newly reborn child ruler. She accepts self-rule within Rhyme, and they agree to stop creating new child assassins. Flos then takes Helios after its queen abdicates, offering her son a chance to earn the kingdom's restoration through service. These settlements enlarge Rhyme but leave both territories unstable. A desert clan reaches Rhyme under Orthenon's protection. Its young blacksmith proves her rare purification craft by forging a superior individual blade. Flos preserves the resident master smith's position because his work can equip an army, while commissioning the clan for exceptional weapons. He adopts a growth edict despite the pressure it will place on resources, judges that a coalition is his chief danger, and sends a continent-wide peace ultimatum. He promises not to attack states that leave him and his subjects alone, but demands safe release and passage for anyone who claims allegiance to him. The ultimatum forces rulers to choose between losing experienced subjects and provoking Flos. At a neutral southern sanctuary, the Empress of Beasts refuses to join an anti-Flos alignment and agrees to honor his demand. The sanctuary's champion ends a violent confrontation without killing anyone. Its secretary secretly copies a proposal from the Emperor of Sands, but the contents remain unknown. The next day, nine southern nations declare war on the Empress of Beasts' country, opening a new conflict as Flos's expanding realm continues to prepare for wider war.
How does it end? (ending)
The numbered story ends with Flos's peace declaration reshaping southern politics. Some rulers accept the demand to release his former subjects rather than risk war, while the Empress of Beasts refuses to join resistance against him. Her position leaves her isolated, and nine nations declare war on her country after a tense summit. The Emperor of Sands' copied proposal remains unexplained. Elsewhere, Ryoka remains free and trusted by the concealed vampire family, whose illness and search for Rose, Imani, and Joseph remain unresolved. Lyonette runs the reopened Wandering Inn, Mrsha studies signs and magic, and Numbtongue holds Pyrite's memories, valuable mana stones, and unstable magicore. Ilvriss quietly investigates Az'kerash. The United Nations Company has new allies and medical prospects but still faces financial pressure, hostile Earth arrivals, fading memories, and Niers's attention. In the material following the numbered chapters, the long-range door proves too costly for regular travel, several visiting teams depart, and Ceria's Horns stay behind with the goal of reaching gold rank. The dungeon and Calruz's fate remain open.
