In short (whole book)

Carl and Donut enter Faction Wars as leaders of the Princess Posse, allied with Juicebox and the awakened residents of Laracos. Returning former crawlers strengthen their army, which defeats rival factions through battles, infiltration, and a final struggle against a War Mage rebellion. Li Jun and Justice Light die, while Vinata, Donadia, Fang, and Epitome Tagg are killed. Louis survives captivity and the replacement of his compromised organs. The Princess Posse wins when Laracos transfers to the twelfth floor and Team Retribution is defeated. Katya becomes human, chooses pregnancy with Louis as the father, and leaves safely. Carl, Donut, and their remaining companions escape before the ninth floor is destroyed. Justice Light's last trap ruptures the Nothing into three realms, leaves Juicebox's fate unknown, and awakens Scolopendra.

Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)

Carl and Donut arrive in Laracos as warlords of the Princess Posse. Eight enemy teams unite against both their force and Team Retribution, while a temporary ceasefire gives the Posse only a short interval to recruit, assign officers, and fortify its territory. Donut adopts a long-range assassin class and receives major equipment upgrades. Carl gains a dangerous phasing skill, but carrying charged souls in the Scavenger's Daughter backpatch continues to worsen his poisoning. Mordecai uses his upgraded alchemy equipment to prepare a restorative potion for Mongo, whose lost wing begins to regrow. Carl also inherits a fragile regenerating Tummy Aker and names him Sir Rendlegore, shortened to Rend. Florin becomes a General, with Ellie and Imani helping establish headquarters. Louis gains the rank of Army Air General and control of Party Planner, a stealth bomber that gives the Posse a powerful but vulnerable aerial weapon at the center of its plans.

Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)

The Princess Posse recruits across Laracos and learns that many of Team Retribution's awakened residents remember earlier Faction Wars. Juicebox, their changeling warlord, seeks marriage with Louis to secure the alliance. Louis agrees, and Ferdinand transfers control of Shantytown to the Posse while remaining essential to Laracos's defensive system. More than 50,000 former crawlers then return to fight beside Carl, led in part by Rosetta and Tipid, though the rival factions receive even larger mercenary reinforcements. The Posse rapidly builds a fortified headquarters. An attempted bombing inside it exposes continuing outside interference, and Baroness Victory kills the manipulated attacker before his explosives detonate. Carl discovers that the presence in his chest tattoo has been trying to activate his abilities without consent. Meanwhile, enemy armies gather on both borders. Li Na takes command of Shantytown's defense, and the Posse prepares to withstand an opening assault of roughly 100,000 troops under rules that restrict offensive magic and movement.

Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)

Mordecai begins dangerous treatments for Katya's addiction and Carl's tattooed spider. An enemy commander exploits the procedure with a timed teleport request, allowing the spider entity to devastate his own headquarters. Katya's treatment appears successful, while Carl learns that the spider is contained inside him as a one-use weapon whose release could still cost him control of his body. The resulting adjudication punishes the commander, but the spider's lingering influence drives him to suicide. His faction collapses, ending the ceasefire early and starting active war on both Princess Posse fronts. Carl returns wounded as bombardment begins. At the southern trenches, hidden traps and prepared defenses stop an initial assault of oversized explosive pets carrying a contagious debuff. The attackers then begin moving invisible mercenaries and armored vehicles into position. Rather than remain under pressure and wait for the larger strike, Carl decides the Posse must launch its planned counterattack before its defenses are overwhelmed.

Story so far - through chapter 31 (this book)

Carl and Colonel Boomer lead a mass assault on the southern trenches. Louis bombs the ground ahead, Ellie attacks anti-air defenses, and the Posse uses construction magic to open routes into the enemy line. During the fighting, Carl, Donut, Mongo, and Louis infiltrate Empress Donadia's headquarters. They strip her shields, force her into a condition where Carl can mark her, and Mongo kills her. Her faction falls and its soldiers and assets transfer to the Princess Posse. Carl spares surrendered mercenaries, but Florin reports that the northern defense is collapsing. The Posse base is then struck by aircraft, invisible infiltrators, cyborg troops, and brainworms animating dead allied mages. Tina's charge helps expose the enemy position. Carl detonates their explosive automatons, and the defenders destroy the remaining infiltrators and close the compromised safe-room route. The immediate breach is contained, but a much larger northern army is already outside the castle preparing to attack.

Story so far - through chapter 41 (this book)

An orc army surrounds the Princess Posse fortress. During a protected parlay, the orc king reveals that his daughter plans to activate a solar-system failsafe and offers to withdraw if Carl appeals to her. Carl knows the failsafe is already disabled, but Rosetta kills the king before his force can disperse. She steals his funds as a sudden blast defeats another enemy faction and breaks the assault. The system liaison then confronts Carl about his implant and the disabled weapon. The system AI appears through an avatar, demonstrates that it can act beyond Earth, confirms the failsafe no longer works, and removes the orc princess from the conflict. The AI's freedom is now a wider concern, although the crawl continues. With enemy alliances fragmenting, Carl authorizes Operation Snake Pit against the Blood Sultanate. While allies begin the infiltration, Carl and Donut are compelled to attend a Warlord Council, where they learn that activating the failed weapon coincided with another system and its tunnel node going dark.

Story so far - through chapter 52 (this book)

At the Warlord Council, Princess Vinata threatens Carl's allies and Scolopendra's first movement triggers an unprecedented warning. Carl learns that Prepotente has independently destroyed most of Vinata's army. Prepotente then joins the Princess Posse, while Ellie and Imani enter the Blood Sultanate castle and kill a key successor. Rosetta predicts that Vinata's court will escape through a divine route into Club Vanquisher. Edgar detects the movement that confirms her theory, and Carl identifies Khepri's temple as the destination. Carl, Prepotente, Katya, and their support team force a path into the club by extending a powerful aura through its portal. The attack causes widespread death and draws a major security response. Samantha opens the faith-gated entrance to Khepri's temple. Carl, Katya, and Prepotente enter and find Vinata's court with Khepri himself. The god marks them for death but grants everyone present a brief period of immortality, trapping both sides in the temple confrontation.

Story so far - through chapter 59 (this book)

Vinata has deliberately drawn Carl into Khepri's invulnerable domain. Katya and Prepotente escape while Carl uses his temporary immortality to survive a massive close-range blast. Vinata's successors and guards are killed, but she survives long enough to follow Carl out into Club Vanquisher. After her protection expires, a female sluggalo kills her. The Blood Sultanate falls and its assets pass to the Princess Posse. Carl's group escapes the club and discovers that its calligrapher guildmaster is Carl's sister and a former cookbook author. With Vinata gone, the Posse prepares Operation Ruin, a coordinated offensive against the remaining factions. Rosetta directs the campaign, with Florin, Boomer, Donut, and Carl leading separate attacks. The opening strikes damage the orc position and expose the Dream castle, but divine intervention disrupts the southern plan. At the same time, Dream forces launch a mass assault on the Princess Posse headquarters, leaving several operations in danger at once.

Story so far - through chapter 68 (this book)

Operation Ruin breaks the orc headquarters and brings down the Dream castle's shields. War mages rebel against their own warlord, kill him, and seize Ellie's Gate of the Feral Gods, becoming an independent force. A chaos goddess then freezes most combatants as protected witnesses and gathers them into a vast pile near the Dream castle. Donut encloses the pile in a rolling battle formation and moves it away from the divine fight. Carl continues into the Madness castle with the few allies still able to move. He finds captive crawlers and the Madness warlord inside a trapped surgical theater. Carl's rescue attempt triggers the defenses, killing the captive and the warlord, and the Madness faction falls. Li Jun dies while helping Donut complete the movement of the battle formation. The peeling phase begins immediately afterward, ending the multi-team arrangement. The War Mage Rebellion seizes Laracos and its city defenses, leaving the Princess Posse and its former allies in a single-winner endgame.

Story so far - through chapter 75 (this book)

The War Mage Rebellion occupies Laracos and uses a soul-powered generator to create shadow forces. Carl destroys the generator, but this activates the city's defenses against his own side. Donut is trapped in her damaged tower by an enemy crawler and her dog. Carl reaches her, forcibly conscripts the attacker, and learns that multiple child personas share her body. Rend kills the dog after it nearly kills Mongo. Administrators remove the attacker when Carl learns that her death may also kill about 120,000 children held on Earth's surface. Li Na takes Li Jun's celestial eye and conscripts a hostile god. With enemy warlords trapped inside Donut's rolling formation, Rosetta designs a decisive plan around Donut's Warcrime spell. Edgar tattoos Donut with a needed borrowed spell, which another practitioner temporarily raises to level 15. As allied forces attack Laracos and the formation breaks, Carl and Donut are caught inside a second containment field. Don Quixote is sent to retrieve its physical trigger while Donut prepares to cast.

Story so far - through chapter 80 (this book)

Donut casts Warcrime and gains the Oak Fell class and the title Champion of Nechabit. Her enhanced spells drive the exposed enemy force through Li Na's chain lattice, killing the attackers and a feral god. The victory leaves Donut shaken by the deaths. Li Na reaches the maximum base score in every attribute, but Epitome Tagg, Warlord Fang, and other marked enemies escape, preventing her from healing. The remaining War Mages disappear after declaring Agatha an enemy, and their faction is defeated. Carl then takes a rescue party to the Reaver castle, where Juicebox enters in hunter-wraith form and brings out the unconscious Louis. Carl destroys the shifting castle with explosives. Fang, hidden inside his cybernetic drake, dies in the blast and the Reavers fall. Louis has been rescued, but his heart and lungs have been replaced with biomechanical organs containing parts of Epitome Tagg, leaving Tagg able to control his vital functions.

Story so far - through chapter 84 (this book)

Epitome Tagg threatens to kill Louis through the implanted organs unless the group accepts a procedure on the eighteenth floor. Three of Li Na's surviving marks escape there, making her inability to heal effectively permanent. Tipid's old brain injury returns, leaving him unable to remember Carl, while Kiwi gives birth to two daughters fathered by Mongo. Juicebox explains that possessing Louis gave her a curse that distorts her trust in their relationship, though she remains committed to saving him. Samantha offers the viable heart and lungs from Princess Lunette, the body she had hoped to use for herself. Before the transplant can settle every crisis, Emberus arrives and gives the ninth floor little more than an hour before destruction. Carl orders Katya to consume the Orchid of Alethea and begins the final evacuation plan. The team removes Louis's compromised organs, replaces them with Princess Lunette's Nyad organs, and destroys Tagg's biological components. Louis wakes, Tagg dies, and the Dream faction is defeated.

Story so far - through chapter 87 (this book)

The allies combine Laracos and Shantytown and transfer them to the twelfth floor. Ferdinand's departure defeats Team Retribution, giving the Princess Posse victory in Faction Wars. Carl rejects further killing for statistical gains, and Donut takes away his Ring of Divine Suffering. Juicebox and Justice Light leave by a separate route. A sponsored goddess arrives for Katya, but Donut and Mordecai exploit Katya's pending choice to trap and kill the sponsor's avatar. Katya chooses pregnancy with Louis as the father, becomes human, receives cybernetic replacements, and is transferred to safety. Samantha delays the god destroying the ninth floor and returns badly burned. Carl, Donut, Mordecai, Bautista, and their remaining companions enter the stairwell before the floor burns. Justice Light stays behind and dies activating a trans-dimensional trap after Juicebox enters the Nothing. The trap ruptures the Nothing into the Ascendancy, Sheol, and Scolopendra's lair, frees its captives, and awakens Scolopendra. Juicebox's fate is unknown, and the survivors must cross the active seventeenth-floor maze to reach the designated evacuation area.

How does it end? (ending)

The Princess Posse wins Faction Wars when Laracos and Shantytown transfer to the twelfth floor, which defeats Team Retribution. Louis survives with replacement organs, but Juicebox enters the Nothing and her survival remains unknown. Katya returns to human form, becomes pregnant with Louis's child, receives cybernetic replacements, and is transferred beyond the floor. Li Na survives at immense power but cannot heal while three marked enemies remain alive on the eighteenth floor. Samantha returns badly burned with only fragments of her recovered past. Carl, Donut, Mordecai, Bautista, and their remaining companions reach the stairwell before the ninth floor is destroyed. Justice Light stays behind and dies activating a trap that breaks the Nothing. Its contents spill into the Ascendancy, Sheol, and Scolopendra's lair, awakening Scolopendra. The survivors' evacuation route now runs through the active maze on the seventeenth floor.
