The twenty-first entry in the Undying Mercenaries series finds James McGill investigating the fate of Drusus, held as a nonperson in a secretive facility where prisoners exist as disembodied intellects. McGill's off-the-books search draws him into a betrayal that gets him killed, though he is secretly revived and returned to duty commanding Legion Varus's Third Unit, now bound for a lucrative-seeming contract that turns out to be a dangerous garrison assignment on a newly conquered alien world. Back among his troops, McGill clashes with a returning rival over aggressive new combat robots and must prove Third Unit can hold its own in brutal training exercises before the legion departs for its real mission.
