An expedition on Ilirian is attacked by teleporting, crow-like void beasts. Micaiah, Elder Berkowitz, Alice, Jack, and other survivors take refuge in an active Sill ruin, which seals behind them and blocks communication. Months later they remain trapped, short of food and increasingly unstable. Cal, Charlotte, and Xavier secretly bring Lucy to Ilirian to gather materials for cultivation focuses. Charlotte coerces air-traffic workers into admitting the ship, but Cal discovers he cannot reach the Infinite Sea from the planet. Ilirian's ambient light Qi causes him worsening pain and insomnia. Charlotte reaches bronze and Xavier obtains material from an argentivore, while Cal finds no suitable dark-Qi component. He then discovers a nest of void beasts and takes a discarded living egg filled with familiar dark Qi. Lucy wants the nest and egg destroyed, fearing corruption and a mass outbreak. Cal refuses to abandon the egg, Xavier supports him, and Charlotte accepts the decision after Cal apologizes for accusing her of selfish motives. She and Cedric fled the corporation, but Cedric developed void-induced psychosis and became violent near RF-31. Local investigators trace Lucy's forged entry into Ilirian, but Dragon's Left Eye cultivators take control of the incident after Lucy identifies herself as a soul ship. Underground, Cal, Charlotte, Xavier, and the newly named Ariel enter a preserved Sill city whose loose matter and inhabitants have vanished. Charlotte collapses after being pricked by a damaged enchantment. She identifies the attacker as nanites consuming both tissue and Qi-infused cells. With Xavier urging her to treat the infection as a crucible and Cal supplying extraordinary amounts of Qi, Charlotte advances to iron and seizes control of the nanites inside her. Elsewhere, Maria Lopez has broken her bronze core, abandoned her position as a Dragon's Right Eye elder, and begun rebuilding in poverty around a thread-sensitive beggar's words about the stargazer. In the city's palace, Cal's group meets Lesley, a nanite swarm wearing human form. Lesley sees Charlotte as a path to a viable body, removes her hand to seize the gardener's summoning bell, and captures her with Xavier. Cal escapes toward the buried distress signal despite severely damaged meridians, leaving his friends imprisoned in the laboratory.

Following the distress signal beneath the palace, Cal finds Elder Berkowitz and the Ilirian expedition, trapped for months behind an anti-personnel ward. Their food is nearly gone, and several survivors are injured or psychologically unwell. Cal and Micaiah cooperate on an escape plan. Micaiah makes her rifle scope into a focus, reaches bronze, and destroys the creatures blocking the route to Lesley's laboratory. The survivors distract Lesley while Cal and Ariel recover the gardener's bell. Its ringing summons the Arcadian gardener, who moves to punish Lesley for forbidden nanite research and the pursuit of transcension. Cal and Xavier free Charlotte, whose integrated nanites keep her alive through severe injuries. When Senior Elder Jun arrives to take Micaiah for a likely memory search and purge, Jeremiah sends her away with Lucy and is arrested covering their escape. Cal gives Micaiah his Dragon's Right Eye place, then survives a vacuum crucible with Ariel and reaches iron. Ariel begins forming a dark-Qi core. Three days before the crew's arrival, Maria Lopez prepares to use the stargazer movement for leverage.
