In short (whole book)

Kale searches for damaged wellsprings while Queen Bael gathers an army and Solakir comes under attack. King Bael dies defending the fortress, and Queen Bael takes control of the Dead Forge. As the Ritek cross the Black Chasm, Kale restores more of Talona's magic and forces their leader into a truce. Together they close the chasm, but the Ritek secretly retain dangerous gray power stones and their leader betrays him. A goddess kills the Ritek leader, then tries to take Kale's power. Kale strikes her with Treach's white blade, receives her power and soul, and is sent to Eder alive but stranded. The Ritek leader's daughter seeks peace, while a surviving commander prepares for renewed conflict. Ember, trapped in the void, is offered a possible return to life, and the dead Ritek leader becomes the subject of a compromised resurrection effort as Talona faces a new threat from beyond its former barrier.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Kale joined an expedition to Black Hollow, where one of Inara's damaged wellsprings was repaired. The mission left him physically weakened after an attack by the dead sisters, who also stole his ether energy and stored it in crystals. Kale remained in recovery while Talona's damaged magic and the war with the Ritek were unresolved.

Story so far - through chapter 4 (this book)

Kale is recovering from an attack when news arrives that the Animus Seal has opened and a missing enemy force may alter the war. His stolen ether energy has begun to return, but he redirects his immediate mission toward outcast magic users and a possible wellspring north of the Black Chasm. Kale, Kenna, LeCory, and two dragon allies cross the ocean, only to be struck down by violent lightning. They survive a hostile hunting party and continue northwest on foot in Ritek territory. Elsewhere, Max and Queen Bael are imprisoned after a coup disrupts their attempt to secure military support. At Solakir, King Bael and Queen Bael investigate three missing levels beneath the basilica. The crisis deepens when attackers appear inside Solakir. Cassie evacuates Kale and Ember's children through the prison while King Bael uses dangerous void magic to defend them. By the end of chapter 4, the children have reached the basilica, but the fortress remains under coordinated assault.

Story so far - through chapter 9 (this book)

Queen Bael refuses to purchase mercenaries as a substitute for an alliance, and the port council responds by seizing her ship and ordering her delegation executed. Retired assassins and northern sailors free the captives before dawn. Max then helps the displaced local rulers defeat the coup, securing a commitment of four thousand graduating mercenaries and five hundred support personnel. At Solakir, King Bael spends fatal amounts of void power protecting the children and dies. Queen Bael claims the hidden Dead Forge, heals an injured child, and turns the cathedral's dead against the invaders. She also reveals that the publicly opened Animus Seal was a decoy and that six weakening necromancers still hold the true seal. Her force moves north, where Gideon's warning points toward a Ritek crossing near the chasm. A dying bearer of White magic says magical weaving will be necessary to stop Talona's fall and enable Kale's work. The Alliance races to reinforce its advance force while seeking the knowledge and travel magic needed to arrive in time.

Story so far - through chapter 13 (this book)

An ancient Skaith elder confirms that Kale can heal the damaged wellsprings but warns that this alone cannot prevent war. Kale decides the Black Chasm itself must be healed, possibly with the Ritek leader's help. At Gaeta, he restores a wellspring beneath caves controlled by a spider queen. She is revealed as a primordial altered by the damaged magic, and Kale spares her under an agreement that frees the Skaith dead and relocates her. A Gorgon leader then offers a possible source of leverage. Meanwhile, Max and Queen Bael bring more than nine thousand troops to the Alliance camp. The Ritek raise paired towers and form a bridge across the chasm. At Sirens Bay, Calliope guides Kale to another damaged wellspring. He survives her attack, heals the source, and wins the sirens' promise to obstruct enemy sea transport. The Ritek leader rejects the Alliance's parley, demonstrates the force of her strengthened magic, and gives the defenders one day before an advance by thousands of warriors and wizards.

Story so far - through chapter 17 (this book)

Kale stays apart from the main battle because his plan for the chasm will require all his magic. He recruits outside fighters to strike the Ritek reserves, but insists that they stop on his signal to avoid a magical catastrophe. After saving the wounded Queen Bael, he challenges the Ritek leader and is badly injured when a concealed priest intervenes. Kale escapes the battlefield with the leader and offers a truce: she must help him heal the Black Chasm, while both armies stop fighting. He shows that the Alliance has blocked her reinforcements and escape routes, and she accepts. In the gods' realm, Ember tries to divert an old goddess from Kale, receives protection from the goddess of magic, and is then abducted by a hunter shade. The goddess of time temporarily confines the old goddess, while the god of death threatens the goddess of magic over her interference. Back on Talona, Kale learns that closing the chasm requires a controlled weave of power from both sides. He also saves the Alliance archwizard's dying wife by joining a benevolent angelic soul to her.

Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)

Kale and the Ritek leader coordinate priests on opposite sides of the Black Chasm and close it, restoring Talona's magic. The work produces volatile gray energy. While the priests siphon it away, the Ritek secretly preserve some in stones that can heal terrible wounds or unleash destructive force. The Ritek leader then betrays Kale. Her priests restrain Max, LeCory, and her own daughter, who has openly sided with Kale. She also reveals that she sent a force to destroy Solakir and kill Kale's household. A goddess intervenes and kills the Ritek leader, but then declares that healing the chasm has placed Talona in new danger and attempts to take Kale's power. Kale impales her with Treach's white blade. She transfers her energy, power, and soul to him, then sends him through a universal portal. The Ritek leader's daughter seeks peace and plans to return Max and Kenna to the damaged Solakir. A surviving Ritek commander withdraws more than two thousand troops and begins planning for renewed conflict. Kale lands on Eder badly injured but alive, where a local woman becomes his first contact.

Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)

The Black Chasm is closed and Talona's magic is restored, but the victory leaves several dangerous consequences. Kale remains stranded on Eder with the goddess's power and soul. King Bael is dead after defending Solakir, while the Ritek leader's daughter favors peace and a surviving commander preserves a large remnant for future war. The Ritek leader herself is dead, yet a human researcher and an ancient priestess recover the object holding her soul and begin preparing a transfer into another body. The researcher secretly disperses part of that soul in an effort to prevent the restoration. Ember awakens in the void and meets the defender who died during the Solakir raid, now claiming control over passage between life and death. He offers her a route back to the living world if they can obtain a death god's power. Ancient observers also conclude that Talona can now be detected from beyond a universal barrier. They expect unknown arrivals and possible abductions, while one sees Kale's new divine power as a possible means for him to return.

How does it end? (ending)

Kale survives the closing of the Black Chasm and the Ritek leader's betrayal, but he does not return to his allies. After the Ritek leader is killed, Kale strikes down the goddess who tries to take his power. The goddess gives him her power and soul before sending him to Eder, where he is alive, injured, and cut off from Talona. Max, Kenna, Queen Bael, Cassie, LeCory, and the Ritek leader's daughter survive the known conflict, while King Bael dies defending Solakir. The daughter seeks peace, but a Ritek commander withdraws with more than two thousand troops and plans a future campaign. The dead leader's soul is retained for possible restoration, though a human researcher secretly damages that effort. Ember remains in the void with a possible path back to life that requires a death god's power. Talona's restored magic has also made the world detectable beyond its former barrier, leaving an external incursion as a new threat.
