Previously: John Sutton established himself as a farmer and defender of a valley threatened by magical disasters. Ellie became his closest partner in both the farm and its defense, while Thomas helped manage their growing community. Ferdie and Sigvald served as powerful animal allies, and the plant mage bound to Shadow Tower supported their magical and agricultural work. Katrine, an off-world ally and former empress, disappeared after travelling through the First Mage's Door with Togine. John carries a dragon spirit in his mana pool, a source of great power that may eventually take control of his body and help bring about the world's end.

So far this book: John crosses the First Mage's Door alone and arrives in a world rich enough in mana to endanger weaker visitors. The tracking seed indicates that Katrine is alive but hidden, while the vanished return gate leaves John without an easy route home. At Candle Scholar Tower, he registers as a Fourth Order outworlder and conceals his true ability. He learns that time passes about seven times faster here than in his home world, increasing the urgency of the search. After demonstrating that he can rapidly master advanced magic, John is tested by all seven tower masters and recognized as Eighth Order. He then reveals his reason for coming. Tower records show that Katrine joined an irregular, sealed expedition to the Windstar Ruins and vanished with the rest of her group. The researcher who assembled the mission left through a gate and becomes the leading internal suspect. John identifies the Cabal of the Broken Gate as the group that betrayed his companions, though the suspected insider's connection to it remains unconfirmed.

John reaches Windstar, where his search leads through a slaving gang that supplies captives to the Cabal of the Broken Gate. He breaks the gang, frees its prisoners, and uses its contacts to pose as the seller of a powerful captive. Disguised as that captive, he follows an armored Cabal buyer through a temporary gate. The buyer confirms that advance forces have already entered John's world and that a larger deployment awaits stable portals. John overcomes the buyer and a shadow guard, learning that the Cabal obtained his world's coordinates from two captured natives. He then finds Katrine alive in a mountain crevice. She has endured severe injuries, including ruined legs, a lost eye, and a cracked mana pool that leaks uncontrollably. Katrine reports that her Candle Scholar Tower group delivered her and Togine into an ambush, and that a tower mage joined the Cabal and participated in their abuse. John sends her back to Windstar for treatment and mechanical legs. He remains behind after seeing three unstable gates and preparations for invasion, choosing to attack the Cabal's network rather than leave immediately.

John disables one Cabal gate and damages the other invasion routes while turning the city's defenses against its weapons, research, artifact production, and mana stores. The Cabal's supreme mage confronts him with a domain that controls ambient mana and offers to spare John's world if John submits for study. John refuses and draws on the dragon's blue flame despite the danger. The flame breaks the supreme mage's defenses, and John devastates the Cabal city before escaping through the last gate. His return releases destructive pressure from the mana accumulated in the upper world, so he seals his own mana pool to protect his surroundings. The seal leaves him weak, limited to lower-order world-mana spells, and unable to reopen the pool in his home world. The bear claims that a much larger army and numerous sage generals are coming. John releases him to carry a warning, then begins organizing the valley for war, with food production as the central strategic concern. The defenders seek help from the Ecclesia and Soaring Cloud Tower and prepare scouts, soldiers, and siege measures.

John and Ellie begin designing stable adaptations under the nature spirit's supervision. A dragon-shaped mental image proves dangerous because the dragon can consume John's mental strength, and the system warns that enough loss could erase his identity. The nature spirit transfers control of Shadow Tower to John and makes Ellie vice tower master. Their new access reveals an ancient Runic Tower Core that requires pure mana and came from another world. The remaining imprint of Storm Master Kelvis explains the artifact, confirms Katrine's passage through the dimensional gate, leaves John his collected writings, and fades. Before John can pursue the mystery, the sage bear returns with Markov, the Beast Army's seventh general. Markov badly wounds John while Ferdie fights the bear in a giant scaled form. John bargains away part of his mental strength for a few seconds of the dragon's physical power, enough to kill both generals. The backlash leaves him unconscious and unable to risk another bargain. He and Ellie commit to completing their adaptations quickly, while evacuation remains a contingency if John cannot recover enough strength to defend the valley.

Ellie fixes a planned form combining plant, lightning, healing, and divinatory elements, while John remains divided between his identity as a farmer and the dragon-shaped images pressing on his mind. He learns to distill small amounts of pure mana from corrupted lands before answering a summons from New Dawn. Its sage leader, the Undying, offers an alliance and admits that the organization supported the Iron Monarch's device. John refuses an alliance, demonstrates the danger of pure mana, and warns the group not to abuse those under his protection. Soon afterward, Gora confronts him as the Beast Army's destroyer. She is a scale-covered dragon-fox ruler whose power exceeds the sages John has fought, and she demands marriage after he refuses submission. John's pure-mana attacks fail. Gora keeps him confined and threatens humanity if he will not become her mate. In the valley, the nature spirit locates him and warns that the coming Beast Army can destroy their defenses. Ellie accepts a permanent forced evolution using the tower's stored mana. Her original plan burns away, and she emerges as an elemental lightning and divination being with wings. She travels with Ferdie and Sigvald to Gora's palace, arriving as the Beast Army generals prepare to test John. The three allies hold the generals back until Gora ends the fight. She releases them but gives the valley one day before her army marches, and she challenges Ferdie personally. The group returns through the palace portal and destroys its stone, though several hidden beast portals remain. With the nature spirit dormant after empowering Ellie, John decides to unseal his mana and confront the dragon's true soul while Ellie and the others organize the valley's defense.

John breaks the seal over his heart, restores the exhausted nature spirit with the resulting mana surge, and enters his mental space to face the dragon's actual soul. Outside, Ellie warns Soaring Cloud Tower that the invasion will come through hidden portal stones. A monkey-beast general releases two captive legendary beasts and attacks her with illusory copies. Ellie's transformed lightning eye identifies the real attacker, Sigvald kills one released beast, and the tower's sages, including Orateth, defeat the other. Sigvald destroys the hidden portal stone, collapsing the mountain as the general escapes. Refugees move toward John's valley while allied sages join its defense. Five days later, Gora's army reaches the mountains in overwhelming numbers. Ferdie engages Gora in giant forms, the defenders begin a fighting withdrawal, and Katrine returns through a mechanical portal to reinforce Ellie. John remains locked in his internal battle.

John accepts responsibility for his own past violence instead of blaming the dragon. The nature spirit raises root guardians and a living barrier, allowing an organized retreat into the valley. Gora and Ferdie remain locked in a giant-form stalemate outside, and the wider Beast Army threat is unresolved. With Katrine back among the defenders and the war still active, John publicly proposes marriage to Ellie, who accepts.
