Twelve Months recap

During the year after the Battle of Chicago, Harry Dresden struggles with Karrin Murphy's death while sheltering survivors, raising Maggie, training Fitz, and obeying Mab's command to court Lara Raith. His efforts to protect Chicago draw him into conflicts with ghouls, anti-supernatural activists, the White Council, and retaliating practitioners. Harry and Lara learn that he can separate and magically feed a White Court Hunger, but Mab manipulates this into leverage over Lara. Harry spends Mab's promised boon on Thomas, Justine, their child, and the Svartal debt. The rescue saves Thomas and recovers Justine, but their newborn son goes to Etri's family as settlement. A Black Court coalition then assaults Harry's castle. The defenders defeat the attackers, Carlos Ramirez destroys Cleo, and Mavra escapes. By the following anniversary, Harry is rebuilding his life with Maggie and Fitz, has renewed contact with Thomas, and remains engaged to Lara while preparing for the continuing threat from Dracul and Mavra.

Previously: The Battle of Chicago ended with Ethniu defeated and imprisoned beneath Demon Reach, while Harry retained responsibility for the Eye of Balor. Karrin Murphy was killed during the battle, leaving Harry in acute grief. Thomas had attacked the Svartal ruler Etri after an enemy possessing Justine used her and her unborn child to coerce him. Harry removed Thomas from Svartal custody and placed him in Demon Reach stasis, where his starving Hunger remained a danger. Justine disappeared while still possessed. Harry's ties to the White Council had broken, leaving him expelled under a suspended death warrant, while the Black Court still held Wild Bill Myers and Yoshimo and Chandler's fate remained unknown. Mab, Harry's sovereign as Winter Knight, arranged a political marriage between Harry and Lara Raith, Thomas's sister and the leader of the White Court. Chicago survived the supernatural assault but entered a prolonged civic and humanitarian crisis.

Three weeks after the battle, Harry is barely sleeping and is using rigid exercise and routine to contain his grief. His castle has become a refuge for displaced families under Will Borden's daily management. Mab requires Harry to begin public courtship of Lara Raith and to repair the breach with Etri. Lara provides beds, medicine, and protection for the castle, and she joins Harry in searching for the possessed and missing Justine. On Demon Reach, Thomas confirms that he is alive but that releasing him would let his starving Hunger feed uncontrollably. He also confirms that threats against Justine and their child forced his attack on Etri. Harry refuses Lara's willingness to sacrifice victims to save Thomas. Etri grants Harry one year to prove the coercion or surrender Thomas for punishment, warning that refusal will make Harry an enemy. Meanwhile, Mort Lindquist brings Fitz to Harry for training because the young man's expanding magical abilities have become unsafe without instruction.

Harry begins training Fitz but remains emotionally and magically unstable. With ordinary law enforcement depleted, he takes responsibility for a wave of ghoul disappearances and orders the ghouls out of Chicago. A stakeout becomes a coordinated ambush when Harry's combat magic fails, and the Brotherhood of St. Brigid rescues him. Michael Carpenter, Molly, and Harry's Valkyrie bodyguard each confront his self-neglect and urge him to reconnect with Maggie. At Lara's Halloween party, Dracul identifies both himself and Harry as Starborn, invites a White Council challenge, and warns of a larger conflict. Carter LeChase provokes Harry into aggression, forcing Lara to defend her guest peace. Harry later admits that his recklessness reflects a wish to punish himself through death. As attacks on magical residents spread, Artemis Bach seeks organized retaliation. Harry instead commits the Knights of the Bean to protect the community, hoping to prevent fear and anger from turning into black magic.

The White Council warns that reports of black magic in Chicago may bring a formal response. A severe pain curse strikes a Brotherhood member and may leave lasting harm, opening an investigation into retaliatory magic. Molly blocks an unauthorized Warden raid on Bach Ordered Books, while Harry assumes responsibility for preventing further black magic. On Demon Reach, Harry, Lara, Mab, and the island's spirit begin the greater-circle rescue. Harry separates Thomas from his Hunger, but Thomas immediately begins dying and the entity nearly consumes Harry. Because destroying it would also fatally damage Thomas, Harry feeds both of them and persuades the Hunger that preserving its host serves its own survival. Lara revives Thomas, who chooses to live for Justine and their child. Mab has already captured the pregnant Justine. She plans to remove the possessing spirit through severe treatment and conceal the ordeal from Justine afterward. With Harry's permission, Mother Summer delivers the baby. Mab then places Thomas's son under the protection of Etri's family as the life owed for Thomas's attack, settling the Svartal claim but separating the child from his parents. Two weeks later, Thomas has recovered physically but asks Harry for distance after learning the price of the rescue. A Black Court warning then arrives, and Harry prepares the castle for an imminent assault.

Harry discovers that Malvora fear-eaters have manipulated the protest while ghouls, Renfields, and Black Court elders use the crowd as cover. He drives the mortals away with a magically created storm, then draws the attackers into the castle's prepared defenses. Bear is wounded protecting Harry, while Fitz survives his first battle and helps hold the roof. Lara and reinforcements including Daniel Carpenter, Forthill, Butters, and Carlos Ramirez join the defense. Carlos breaks the control over the Renfields and destroys the Black Court elder Cleo. Mavra escapes, but the remaining breach force is crushed inside the castle and the other attackers retreat. No defender dies, and the damaged gargoyle Cinnamon can be repaired. The defenders conclude that Dracul may have sacrificed expendable allies to improve Mavra's position, so they divide intelligence work among Winter, the White Court, the Council, the Church, the Paranet, and the Little Folk. In the following months the castle is repaired and passes inspection. Harry and Lara remain engaged and begin controlled energy transfers. Harry continues raising Maggie and training Fitz, handles Murphy's anniversary without isolating himself, and reconnects with Thomas.

Harry restores Thomas by separating his Hunger, sustaining both halves, and persuading the Hunger to preserve its host. Mab captures Justine and intends to remove the possessing spirit, although the treatment and its memories must be hidden from her. Mother Summer delivers Thomas and Justine's son, whom Mab places with Etri's family to settle the Svartal blood debt. The child is protected, but separated from his parents. The castle then survives a coordinated assault by Malvora, ghouls, Renfields, and the Black Court. Carlos destroys Cleo, Mavra escapes, and no defender dies. Months later, the repaired castle passes inspection. Harry and Lara remain engaged and begin controlled energy transfers while quietly resisting Mab's leverage. Harry lives with Maggie, continues training Fitz, and reconnects with Thomas. He releases Murphy's shade and manages the battle's anniversary without withdrawing from the living. Dracul and Mavra remain the central strategic threat, and Harry's allies establish an intelligence network to track them.
