In short (whole book)
As the founders prepare for the end of their protection, Max kills a frost Jotun, sees his daughter complete the Tower, repairs a centaur world infected by an infant world eater, and deepens the alliance's training and civic institutions. A portal collective improves divine-point income but exposes the founders to surveillance. Max then uncovers a pattern of peaceful gods coerced into fatal arena challenges and accepts a vastly dangerous wager against Unbroken, an adaptive captive that has consumed seventeen gods. Fowl finds a loophole allowing Bob to advance Max during the fight. After surviving long enough to activate Consume's domain, Max kills and absorbs Unbroken. The arena upholds the result and pays fifty billion divine points. Max reaches tier six, his six fellow founders reach tier five, and the strengthened alliance begins fortifying for the expiration of its protection in roughly eleven months.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Max and his companions became gods responsible for allied peoples and multiple worlds. Max shares his life and battles with Bob, the sentient black skill called Consume, while Rakonath is bonded to him as a dragon ally. Max and Tanila have a half-elf daughter whose progress through the Tower has carried her close to its completion. The founders' divine status brings resources and authority, but also makes them participants in a much larger contest among gods. Their worlds remain protected for a limited period, giving the group time to strengthen their people and themselves before outside powers can attack directly.
Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)
Max risks another public arena battle to gain the divine points his alliance needs, defeating a frost Jotun world-eater after Bob takes control during the worst of the fight. Consume grants major statistics and abilities, but Max refuses a power that would transform him into a solitary consumer of worlds. At home, Max and Tanila's daughter leads her five-member party through the Tower's final trial. The Tower creates a giant duplicate of her, but the party's equipment and coordination overcome it. The daughter delivers the killing blow and barely survives the reflected damage. Her team then crosses the portal into the next stage of its journey, beginning an enforced separation from the founders that will last three hundred years.
Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)
With his daughter gone, Max turns toward the alliance's readiness. He builds a protected underground chamber where gods can train against one another without permanent death. Tanila defeats the bound demon companion in its first match through careful battlefield preparation, and Fowl later defeats Cordelia after revealing that decades of poison-resistance training neutralized her main tactic. A decline in divine-point income draws Max to a neglected centaur world suffering drought, sickness, and deaths. A younger warrior condemns his absence and challenges the local elder. Max investigates instead of punishing the criticism, finding a vast life-draining blight around the world's control panel. He destroys its guardian with Wildfire and learns it was an infant world eater, probably planted deliberately. After activating restorative blessings, Max gives the younger warrior a communication ring and directs him to share leadership with the elder while the world recovers.
Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)
The alliance cannot identify who planted the infant world eater, but the incident forces the founders to improve communication and governance across their worlds. Bob defeats Rakonath in training through tactics rather than raw force, while Batrire develops Sensory Control after enduring dangerous fire exercises and reconnecting with her purpose as a protector. On a perpetually dark world, hostile inhabitants and a vampire god block Max from the control panel until Bob uses corruptive death magic. A stronger resident god then negotiates access and agrees to maintain the world's contribution. The encounter confirms that world ownership can bring conflict with resident gods and their allies. The founders respond by planning expansion, exploration, dragon relocation, and stronger institutions. Tanila continues difficult rune research, while Max urges patience and makes time for their marriage. He also offers Bob control of his body for ordinary experience rather than only emergencies.
Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)
Bob accepts Max's offer and spends time in the capital through Max's body, helping a struggling food seller and recovering a fragment of erased memory. Fowl and Batrire establish a dwarf-led Tower academy as a lasting civic legacy. Meanwhile, a suspicious arena match ends with a water-based god killing a fire-based opponent in a carefully prepared act of revenge. The founders conclude that the arena may be shaping contests rather than serving as a neutral venue. Max uses a demon king's outstanding debt to demand an explanation of the wider divine game. The demon king describes many simultaneous contests with shifting rules, transferable assets, and victories that can be appropriated. He also says the three black skills appear on every active board, but refuses further disclosure without a pact. The debt ends with the founders convinced they need alliances, practice, and a concealed central objective, even though they still do not understand the true game.
Story so far - through chapter 36 (this book)
At the midpoint of their protection period, the founders accept that ordinary income is unlikely to carry them all to tier five. They weigh costly skill and equipment improvements while pursuing specialized preparation. Rakonath deals with missing young dragons and internal opposition to cooperation with other peoples. Max and Tanila's daughter, now beyond the Tower, governs alongside her multiracial team and remains in contact with her mother. Batrire develops magical perception, defensive healing, and faster recovery from curses. Fowl subjects himself to dragonfire, venom, and petrification to build resistances, planning to add a safeguard against one fatal blow. Cordelia retrains her bow for close combat, Tanila creates sequential layered runes and plans a defensive network, and the bound demon companion learns to accept the strength shared through his bond. Rakonath begins organizing dragons into a coordinated defensive flight. Each founder is addressing a different weakness before stronger gods can reach them.
Story so far - through chapter 41 (this book)
Because current divine-point growth leaves little room for failure, Max investigates a portal collective connecting dozens of worlds. Its representative offers graded arrangements ranging from trade access to full mutual defense, but unexpectedly knows about Max and Tanila's daughter. The founders choose the least binding trade partnership, intending to gain commerce while limiting disclosure and watching the network in return. The new portal raises income and opens regular traffic, yet its activation feels invasive and routes through an unidentified central Nexus. Six months later, the founders discover that the collective supports a market selling intelligence on gods. Their own profiles compile arena broadcasts, portal scans, observations, abilities, relationships, and proposed methods of isolating them. Max buys the files anonymously and learns that much of his visible arsenal is exposed, although outsiders still misunderstand Bob and underestimate important limits. The portal has solved part of the income problem while creating a systematic surveillance threat.
Story so far - through chapter 46 (this book)
A peaceful tier-three shepherd god issues an anomalous challenge to Max. Investigation reveals that an ancient, overwhelming presence ordered the shepherd to enter the arena, refuse surrender, and die or see the shepherd's world destroyed. Max agrees to make the death quick and protect the world afterward. He wins the staged contest, inherits the threatened world, and discovers a large wager placed almost immediately on a short fight. The collective investigator traces similar cases, while Bob enters protected arena records and confirms seventeen connected bets from one hidden source across centuries. A vast system-adjacent presence notices the intrusion and allows Bob to retreat. Forty years pass without open retaliation, but the alliance remains far short of tier five. An arena master then offers Max a twenty-to-one wager against Unbroken, an adaptive captive undefeated against divine challengers for sixty millennia. The terms require Max to remain at tier four until combat begins.
Story so far - through chapter 53 (this book)
Archives show that Unbroken has killed and absorbed seventeen tier-four challengers, learning from every attack and growing stronger after each victory. To improve income and preparation, the founders accept associate membership in the portal collective despite its greater expectations and surveillance. Merchants and organizations then approach their territories with detailed knowledge and offers carrying escalating obligations. The bound demon companion rejects a syndicate arrangement, Fowl manages trade conflict in his city, Cordelia begins counter-intelligence work, and Rakonath negotiates tightly limited trade in naturally shed dragon scales. The founders conclude that someone may be studying and positioning the entire alliance around the arena offer. Max decides that refusing will not remove the wider threat and commits to the fight after prolonged training. Bob develops True Mirror into a physical copy of Max that can fight independently, though its destruction harms Bob. The alliance mobilizes its peoples and builds tactics around Max and Bob operating as two bodies.
Story so far - through chapter 57 (this book)
After decades of simulations and training, Max and Bob can sustain their two-body tactics for hours, but even their best plans leave a substantial risk of death. With one year of protection remaining, Max formally accepts the twenty-to-one wager and commits 2.5 billion divine points. The fight is scheduled only thirty days before the protective period ends. During the founders' final gathering, Fowl identifies a loophole in the contract: Max must enter at tier four, but the wording may allow Bob, who has a distinct System identity, to initiate Max's advancement once combat begins. The group keeps the plan secret because the arena might close the gap or void the wager. The rabbit-shaped helper confirms that the interpretation has a technical basis but cannot predict adjudication. Max enters the arena prepared to create a two-second opening for Bob, knowing that a successful advancement might unlock a domain while a failed ruling could cost both his life and the alliance's accumulated resources.
Story so far - through chapter 61 (this book)
The System accepts Bob as the initiator of Max's advancement, making Max tier five after the fight begins. The new Consume domain needs twenty-four hours to charge, forcing Max and Bob to survive against an opponent that rapidly adapts to their weapons, magic, movement, and shared patterns. Unbroken repeatedly destroys Bob's physical clone, weakening Bob each time, while Max's mana and regeneration steadily fail. A concealed god-killing artifact wounds Unbroken but cannot overcome its adaptation. Max eventually fights without the clone, uses his remaining abilities and a mana potion to delay, and survives a lethal head strike only because Negate Death Blow activates. At the end of the twenty-four-hour countdown, Consume's domain freezes Unbroken's killing blow. Inside the domain, Unbroken is suppressed, Max's accumulated powers are amplified, and Bob is restored. Max and Bob destroy Unbroken's core, reject its offer of stolen knowledge, and absorb its essence, memories, abilities, and statistics.
Story so far - through chapter 63 (this book)
The arena challenges the result, but the official who wrote the restriction confirms that it barred Max's own pre-fight advancement and deliberately left Bob's action permissible. The fifty-billion-divine-point payout therefore stands. The official also admits that the loophole was meant to give Unbroken a genuine challenge and warns that Max's victory serves other interests while attracting old enemies. Max reunites with Tanila, Fowl, Batrire, Cordelia, Rakonath, Bob, the bound demon companion, and the rabbit-shaped helper. He spends 17.5 billion divine points to become a tier-six intermediate god. Over the next week, the other six founders advance to tier five. Roughly 1.8 billion divine points remain for defenses, expansion, and reserves. The hostile syndicate has fallen silent, but Cordelia treats that as preparation rather than retreat. With about eleven months of protection left and three assault approaches still to fortify, the strengthened alliance turns immediately toward the expected attack.
How does it end? (ending)
Max's victory over Unbroken is upheld because the contract restricted Max from advancing before the fight but did not prevent Bob, a separate System consciousness, from initiating the advancement after combat began. The arena pays fifty billion divine points. Max advances again to tier six, while Tanila, Fowl, Batrire, Cordelia, Rakonath, and the bound demon companion each reach tier five. Bob develops alongside Max and remains closely integrated with him. About 1.8 billion divine points remain for defenses, expansion, and reserves. The alliance has only around eleven months before its protection ends, with three approaches still requiring fortification. Its deeper problems remain unresolved: the portal collective brings surveillance and obligations, the hostile syndicate has gone quiet, an ancient power continues to coerce arena sacrifices, and the larger contest involving Bob and the other black skills is still obscure. Max and Tanila's daughter remains away with her Tower party on the three-hundred-year onward journey.
