In short (whole book)
Max returns to Igarra, defeats the wolfkin champion who took control, and briefly resumes authority over the world. When Rakonath's core is stolen for a black-hole bomb, Max pursues the thief, dismantles the weapon, and restores the young dragon. A void colossus then claims Igarra, and Max chooses evacuation over a hopeless defense. Back home, the party crosses the tower's true threshold, learns that completion can grant godhood, and confronts the consequences of treating its inhabited worlds as disposable trials. Dagon's training strengthens the group, while Tanila gains control over her dangerous royal form. Bob forces the ineligible Rakonath into floor 69, prompting the System to imprison him and lock Consume. The party nevertheless reaches floor 70 with Rakonath as a teammate. Cordelia is then abducted by an elf ruler who demands Max come alone. Max recognizes the trap and prepares a group rescue while Bob remains imprisoned but connected to him.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Max became a world champion and tower climber, with Bob serving as his bound black skill and adviser. His established companions include the climbers Tanila, Fowl, Batrire, and Cordelia, as well as Golden Axe leaders Everett and Tom. Tanila is Max's partner and is carrying their child. Max is also bonded to Rakonath, a young silver dragon raised and taught by a protective red-dragon guardian. Max's sister Stacy and her daughter remain part of the family he is trying to protect. The companions bring different strengths to the group: Tanila is a spellcaster, Fowl fights on the front line, Batrire heals, and Cordelia attacks at range. Everett provides leadership for Golden Axe, while Tom can handle its administration and training. These relationships shape Max's continuing pursuit of strength. He remains responsible for people in more than one world and continues climbing the tower in the belief that greater power may help him keep them safe.
Story so far - through chapter 10 (this book)
Max leaves Stacy and returns with his companions and both dragons to resolve his responsibility to Igarra. On arrival, he learns that a wolfkin champion has killed his appointed representative and seized the city and teleporter. The ruler is lethal toward challengers but otherwise maintains a firm order. Max hides his party and issues a challenge alone, knowing that thousands of worlds will watch. A dwarven weaponsmith helps him forge an eight-core legendary weapon capable of changing among melee forms. Max names it Sunder at the arena. The wolfkin's metal body resists most attacks, while his axes and summoned specters inflict a cumulative slowing curse. Bob eventually cleanses the curse. Max then exploits the arena's shrinking boundary, leaving the ruler trapped outside the entrance to his dimensional space. He emerges and kills the immobilized champion with Sunder, restoring his claim to Igarra. The immediate contest is settled, but the consequences of taking the world back remain unresolved.
Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)
After reclaiming Igarra, Max warns the interworld audience against future attacks. The defeated champion's body is too corrupted for Rakonath to consume safely. Max learns that his dragon bond may extend his life for centuries and that his strongest skills have advanced beyond the ranks familiar to his allies. He begins shifting Igarra toward delegated administration while exploring its trade system and local tower. Elsewhere, divine figures secretly recognize that Max controls a black skill without losing himself. The party clears the local tower rapidly, receives altered rewards because it belongs to another system, and arranges for Rakonath to remain temporarily with his guardian. Max later entrusts Rakonath's expelled core to a gnome craft specialist while supervising the work. She activates an unauthorized transport device, steals the core, and escapes in an explosion that destroys part of the city. Rakonath begins losing vital support without it. Max secures a route to the thief's world and departs alone to fulfill his promise to recover the core.
Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)
Max reaches the thief's industrial world and traces her to a powerful gnomish crafting family. He infiltrates their guarded estate, but detection ends the covert approach. After destroying mechanized defenses and taking family members captive, he clashes with a council-controlled enforcer. The thief's stepfather finally reveals that Rakonath's core is powering a weapon intended to provoke war between dwarves and goblins. Guided into a deep capital facility, Max finds the core mounted in an unfinished black-hole bomb. He defeats the augmented guards, captures the thief and her accomplices, and removes the device before local authorities arrive. The stepfather becomes a protected witness, and the council agrees to prosecute those implicated in the plot. Because no expert will risk dismantling the bomb, Max kills the thief so Consume can acquire her technical skills. He uses that knowledge to disassemble the weapon without detonating it and frees Rakonath's core. Rakonath swallows it, feels whole again, and carries Max on their first shared flight.
Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)
With Rakonath restored, the party finishes Igarra's tower alongside Max's recovering demon ally. Before Max can return home, a void colossus claims Igarra and offers him one day to evacuate or remain for an unwinnable fight. His companions persuade him to protect his family rather than die defending a world whose residents still have time to leave. Max declines the challenge and offers relocation to willing inhabitants. Eleven vorpal rabbits accompany his group home, while other allies remain behind. The red-dragon guardian then reveals the coercive threat that keeps her from their home territory and teaches Max and Rakonath that survival sometimes requires retreat. Ancient observers meanwhile identify Max as a possible disruption to a balance maintained across repeated cycles. At tower floor 60, Max's party learns that the real ascent begins there and that completion can grant godhood. Bound to secrecy, they enter a vast inhabited forest. Max negotiates with goatfolk who expect climbers to massacre them, reaches the portal without destroying their settlement, and advances peacefully to the frozen floor 61.
Story so far - through chapter 49 (this book)
The party gains unusually strong rewards for completing floor 60 quickly with few deaths, then races across floor 61 and kills its ice-giant boss. Their placement reveals that other tower teams may be substantially faster. An urgent return home exposes a village massacre marked as the work of Tanila's elven-princess sister, a zealot-linked killer who may be provoking Max. Max intends to investigate without involving the wider faction. Before continuing, Dagon warns that the tower's choices can alter a climber's character and offers full-power training in a protected royal field. The dwarven king repeatedly defeats Max and reveals that royal bloodlines can grant dangerous race-specific abilities. Tanila practices a powerful gold-haired form whose intoxicating pull concerns Dagon. The full party also fails against him until it abandons direct attrition. In its final attempt, the group distracts Dagon, draws him into Max's dimensional space, and binds him where his normal advantages cannot free him. Dagon concedes, and the party returns to floor 62 determined to fight and develop together.
Story so far - through chapter 58 (this book)
Floor 62 strains the party and exposes Max's tendency to protect his companions by carrying every danger himself. After an argument, Rakonath advises that overprotection can prevent growth. Max, Fowl, Cordelia, and the others reconcile and agree to face greater risks together. On the underwater floor 63, the party champions the merfolk in a three-match tournament whose losing peoples face being eaten. Fowl wins the opening contest through a carefully coordinated solo plan. Tanila uses her royal form to kill both opponents in the second match, then forfeits immediately to resist the power's seductive influence. Max wins the remaining match, ending the rival champions' rule. A merfolk councilwoman transfers her bloodline to him and dies, leaving Max with three partial bloodlines and an uncertain inheritance for his unborn child. After another boss fight, a tower evaluator reviews the lasting effects of the party's decisions across inhabited worlds. The party learns that those lives and consequences are real, and that completing the tower can create a god and found a bloodline. The evaluator also confirms that incomprehensible powers watch Max and the other black-skill holders before being forcibly silenced.
Story so far - through chapter 66 (this book)
As the party approaches floor 69, Rakonath's guardian warns that his bond with Max is accelerating his growth and that separation causes him pain. Max brings Rakonath to the tower despite the dragon's lack of eligibility. Bob forces an override, allowing Rakonath inside but drawing the System's punishment. Watchers expect Bob and Max to die until an ancient god tied to Rakonath's mark pays a debt to preserve them. Bob remains confined as a lesson. Without his normal help, Max leads the party through an ocean route and a giant shark boss. Rakonath fights as a full teammate, is wounded, heals, and helps secure the victory. Consume locks, but the party reaches floor 70, and Max and Rakonath's bond advances to telepathic communication. After the next boss, Cordelia disappears with an elf ranger. An elf ruler reports that she has been abducted and orders Max to come alone or she will die. Max recognizes the demand as a trap and commits the party, Rakonath, and possibly the red-dragon guardian to a rescue. Bob remains conscious in an indestructible cell, unable to act but still linked to Max and aware of his anger.
How does it end? (ending)
The party clears the floor-69 ocean challenge with Rakonath fighting as a tower teammate, then reaches floor 70 and defeats its cyclops boss. Rakonath is restored, stronger, and able to communicate with Max through their rank-two bond. Tanila remains pregnant and can control her royal red-skill form, though its temptation and the danger attached to their child's bloodlines remain unresolved. Fowl and Batrire remain with the core party. Everett and Tom continue supporting Golden Axe, while Stacy trains under Tom. Igarra has been surrendered to the void colossus after only willing residents were relocated. The elven princess responsible for the village massacre is still free. Bob is conscious but confined by the System after overriding Rakonath's tower eligibility, and Consume no longer works normally. Cordelia has been seized by an elf ruler after leaving with an elf ranger. The ruler demands that Max arrive alone, but Max treats the demand as a trap and prepares to take the party, Rakonath, and possibly the red-dragon guardian on a rescue. Bob still senses Max through their unbroken connection.
