In short (whole book)
Max leads Tanila, Fowl, Batrire, and Cordelia from a successful rescue into war with the elven royal family and an urgent tower ascent. Tanila defeats her sister, Max kills the elven king, and divine intervention leaves the king's goddess barred from their world for a century. The party grows through dangerous tower bosses, powerful transformations, and hard choices about violence and divine patronage. All five reject offered alternative lives and enter the irreversible final floor together, aided by Rakonath and Max's bound demon. They defeat a stronger copy of Max, and Consume captures part of the System emissary, restoring Bob's partial memories and creating the Bloodline of the Consumer. At adjudication, Rakonath and the demon keep their permanent bonds to Max. The group is promised new worlds as divine champions, but eight arrivals are present when only seven may rule, while two rival black skills are already farther ahead.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Max is a level-one tower climber whose unusual power comes from Consume, with Bob serving as his bound adviser. His core party consists of the elemental spellcaster Tanila, the dwarven frontline fighter Fowl, the healer Batrire, and the archer Cordelia. Rakonath, a silver dragon bonded to Max, is also part of his close circle. Everett and Tom help run the Golden Axe and support the group from its home base. Max's family includes his sister Stacy. Dagon rules the dwarves. As the new volume begins, these established alliances, family ties, and tower ambitions shape the dangers ahead.
Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)
Max, Tanila, Fowl, and Batrire enter elven territory with Rakonath to recover Cordelia. Tanila takes command because the target is her elder sister's compound, and she and Fowl keep Max from treating every elf as responsible for the abduction. Tanila invokes a formal royal challenge while Max reaches Cordelia, breaks her chains, and moves her into safety. Tanila badly wounds her sister in the duel, but the defeated royal escapes to their father, the elven king. Cordelia returns home alive but traumatized and without her stolen equipment. Max gives her a powerful replacement bow and arranges support for her recovery. His anger then expands into retaliation against elven institutions. He coerces an elven faction leader into surrendering its vaults, warns the human queens against further bloodshed, and threatens wider war if attacks on his people continue. Everett reports growing fear and political pressure as the conflict moves beyond a private rescue.
Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)
Bob remains imprisoned and senses that Max's escalating violence may be serving an outside plan, while Consume stays locked. A human god warns Max that an elven deity can threaten his allies and urges him to finish the tower quickly. Max's party resumes climbing and shares new stat resources with Cordelia. On a floor divided between a flooded valley and a mechanical realm above the clouds, a goblin ruler asks them to destroy a giant caretaker. Max investigates rather than accepting either side's account. The caretaker claims that a stolen crystal sustains both its life and its duty to regulate the weather, while also accusing the ruler of using that crystal to bind the metal inhabitants. Unable to verify either story, Max enters the ruler's hidden workshop and takes the crystal and its connected pedestal for himself. An escape gem then clears the floor. The party returns home with the powerful apparatus, which Max hopes may contribute to a future dragon-tooth weapon.
Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)
Cordelia admits that captivity left her with nightmares and constant fear outside the tower. Max and Tanila make clear that she is family and give her a standing place of safety with them. Max also begins sharing the advantages of his tower access with the Golden Axe, carrying faction climbers through selected floors. Fowl's equipment and defensive abilities improve, strengthening his role as the party's tank. Max offers his sister Stacy support as she considers whether Callie's father should be found. The tower push is interrupted when Rakonath's red-dragon guardian is attacked by a larger gold dragon. Max and both allied dragons fight it in the air. Max uses his dimensional-space boundary to inflict wounds the attacker cannot heal, then kills it. Rakonath takes its heart while Max keeps its core, scales, teeth, and other materials. The victory also produces an alarming sign from Bob, who briefly reaches Max through the locked Consume connection and urgently asks for power to imprison an unidentified threat.
Story so far - through chapter 28 (this book)
The party clears a huge undead boss on floor 75 by denying it loose bones, pinning it, and combining Cordelia's and Fowl's tactical support with Max's dimensional attack. The reward leaves behind a demonic coin where stored bones had vanished. Max's bound demon identifies it as a sign of an ancient and dangerous summoning power, although safeguards prevent a stronger rival from simply claiming him. The party continues through poison beetles and an ice cave, while Max helps faction teams gain levels and equipment. On floor 78, an apparently endless desert traps the party for three weeks just as an elven army advances on the human city. Everett's false rumor flushes out two likely spies. Max finally crosses the desert fast enough to locate its coastline and exit. Instead of waiting for the invading army, he decides to exploit the absence of troops from the elven capital and strike the king's seat first, with Rakonath and the red-dragon guardian supporting the operation.
Story so far - through chapter 38 (this book)
The raid on the elven capital reveals that the king anticipated Max's attack. Max steals and destroys the trapped throne, then returns to defend the human city as enemy forces approach from three directions. The king's soldiers are bound into his blood magic, so every death strengthens him and pushes Max toward uncontrolled violence. Bob's active combat support returns, but Max becomes trapped inside the king's blood domain and nearly loses control of his body. He escapes the domain, defeats the king, and refuses Consume's soul-harvesting rewards. An elven goddess then arrives to avenge her relative and beheads Max. Negate Death Blow saves him. The human and dwarven gods intervene after Max survives, using System rules to force the goddess away and bar her from the world for a century. They also reveal that Tanila's unborn child is absorbing some of the parents' tower-linked power. If the party completes the climb before the birth, that inheritance could make the child unusually powerful and attract further danger.
Story so far - through chapter 48 (this book)
Unknown powers discuss Max and other black-skill holders as pieces in a larger struggle. Back home, Tanila leaves her mother in charge of the elves for the present, and she and Max marry publicly. The party then returns to the tower with Bob again supporting Max. They defeat an armored beetle by attacking it from within and enter a sequence that alternates bosses with System trading floors. At a bazaar, the group acquires many objects whose uses are unclear. One of them proves essential against a teleporting stone-and-glass golem: an anchor stops its movement, allowing Fowl's defense and reflected damage to expose its core. The resulting rewards transform the party. Fowl becomes a dwarven god's Chosen, Batrire gains a much stronger body while remaining a healer, Tanila unlocks part of a bloodline, and Cordelia gains armor-like protection. Max receives the indiscriminate Wildfire spell. Everett warns that the tower's rewards are intensifying the party's desire for power, and the group recognizes the danger of continuing without restraint.
Story so far - through chapter 55 (this book)
After helping Stacy face the death of a party member, Max's group reaches floor 90. The tower host explains that successful climbers can become world champions, create worlds, and establish systems, but will enter a larger conflict. All five reject an immediate alternative life under a god and choose to continue. A tailored reward gives Max the last piece of a hidden artifact. Joining its four parts takes him to a master crafter who demands three prices for an exceptional weapon: a treasured heart necklace tied to Tanila, most of Max's body, and his experience. Max pays them, though being permanently level one limits the final cost. The result is a concealed Paragon artifact forged from a dragon tooth. It can change melee forms, double Max's attributes, and harm gods with exceptional force. Max keeps its nature secret to protect the party. He then offers material help to a home for abuse survivors supported by Cordelia and gives Tanila's mother strict conditions for retaining the elven throne, including ending zealotry and rebuilding relations with other peoples.
Story so far - through chapter 61 (this book)
On floor 91, Max kills a green dragon with the new artifact and Wildfire. Consume grants him wide-area illusion magic and a temporary green-dragon form, while Rakonath gains a humanoid form. Max uses the dragon's core to prepare powerful equipment for allied climbers. The party defeats an undead knight whose aura reverses healing, and Max's bound demon gains a skill through the victory. Further floors show that Max's bonds can pass unusual benefits to the demon and may also be affecting Tanila's unborn child. After floor 95, a restorative garden offers the five relief from physical and emotional scars. They reject the imposed peace and recover their full memories and feelings, passing the test. The tower host explains the endgame: floor 98 is a trade sanctuary, floor 99 offers each climber a god's alternative life, and entry to the final floor is irreversible. Even a victorious group can never return to its original world. The party reaches the floor-98 market knowing that its last decisions are approaching.
Story so far - through chapter 66 (this book)
The party spends nearly three weeks trading on floor 98, gaining substantial accessories, materials, and stat increases before resisting the market's pull to remain. Fowl reaches the second stage of his progression. Back home, Bob warns that rival black-skill holders are advancing and may use Max's loved ones as leverage. Fowl defeats Dagon alone, and the dwarven king asks the group to make its last ascent from his capital. Rakonath's red-dragon guardian warns that other dragons are receiving dreams calling for retaliation over dragon deaths, but Rakonath openly chooses Max's side. Max also learns that Caleb, Stacy's former partner and Callie's father, apparently never received Stacy's letters or knew of the pregnancy. Stacy agrees only to consider a meeting. Dagon and Velda give the climbers a thirty-day divine blessing. On floor 99, Max, Tanila, Fowl, Batrire, and Cordelia refuse even to meet prospective patrons. They reject the offered escape route together and return home for final preparations before the irrevocable last floor.
Story so far - through chapter 72 (this book)
Max crafts bonded legendary armor for Rakonath and confronts how far his pursuit of power might go. When Bob suggests killing allies or the elven queen for further gains, the party rejects sacrificing others to fear, and Max accepts their judgment. Everett and Tom take responsibility for the faction and Max's family after the group leaves. Tanila offers her mother guarded recognition while demanding that she serve the elven people better. Max, Tanila, Fowl, Batrire, and Cordelia enter the final floor together. The tower host becomes a copy of Max one hundred levels stronger, but the trial fails to exclude Rakonath and the bound demon. The party relies on its established roles to force the copy to retreat, and Max pursues and kills it. Consume retains part of the defeated System emissary, restoring some of Bob's memories and creating Max's Bloodline of the Consumer. At divine adjudication, Rakonath and the demon voluntarily keep permanent bonds with Max. The arrivals are promised remaking as champions and worlds of their own, but eight are present when only seven may rule. Two other black skills are also revealed to be farther ahead.
How does it end? (ending)
Max kills the tower's stronger copy of himself after the party forces it to retreat, completing the final trial. Consume takes part of the System emissary that served as the tower host, restoring some of Bob's memories and creating Max's unique Bloodline of the Consumer. Bob reports that two other black skills are farther ahead. Max, Tanila, Fowl, Batrire, Cordelia, Rakonath, and the bound demon enter divine adjudication. Rakonath and the demon each reject freedom and independent advancement, choosing permanent bonds with Max. The group is told it will be remade as divine champions and given worlds after a protected tutorial period. The immediate unresolved problem is numerical: eight arrivals are counted, but only seven may rule. The future of Tanila's unborn child, the other black skills, possible dragon retaliation, the elven settlement, and the friends and family left under Everett and Tom's care also remain open.
