In short (whole book)

Silas crosses into the Divided Realms to help Ryan, but first bargains with Overlord 42 to destroy an undead interworld warship. After reaching Ryan's besieged world, he heals and resurrects casualties, helps expose a Duchess of Hell spying for Asmodeus, and joins more than forty allies in a three-year temporal training enclosure. The coalition develops new cultivation methods, Psy disciplines, hybrid enchantments, and an army of golems. When demons, angels, and Modrons attack, the defenders survive each assault, and Silas converts most of the Modron invasion into soul constructs that carry the battle into Nirvana. Ryan wins control of his Secundi army by offering freedom, while Silas and the Duchess eliminate Modron judges. Silas then deprives the Divided Realms ruler of Psy and gives Ryan humanity's claim to the Sysource Pool. Ryan defeats the ruler and becomes the new god of Freedom. Kumo departs for Earth, where political and off-world threats are growing, while Silas's primordial development and unfinished Infinity Key draw continued scrutiny.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Tad is a Fae prince and artificer allied with the Ways. He and Silas know one another from earlier adventures, when Tad was among the allied makers.

Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)

Silas accepts appointment as an Envoy of the Fae and leaves for the Divided Realms with Selena, Samvek, Talia, Violet, and Azuria, while Urg remains able to answer his summons. Azuria carries them through the void, where their shared focus on Ryan helps define the route and lets them escape a powerful hunter. They enter near an orc city and are surrounded by a disciplined force using blood arts. Silas avoids a larger battle by defeating two challengers without killing them and demonstrating that he can absorb and reproduce aspects of their blood-based power. A guarded feast and exchange of stories earn the party wary respect. The orcs cannot provide a fixed portal because routes between worlds shift, but they know of a human world that has resisted invasion. Silas agrees to a one-week exchange of training and knowledge in return for a route chart. He begins learning advanced blood manipulation, while Selena, Samvek, and Violet trade their own combat techniques with orc instructors. The arrangement is temporary and explicitly offers no protection from future hostility.

Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)

Silas's blood training gives him control over blood properties and the ability to overwrite an opponent's circulation, though experimentation nearly poisons him. When the orcs provide directions, the party realizes that traveling directly to Ryan could open his world to invasion. They divert to a second world that has repelled the orcs and discover Deterious, a technologically advanced civilization populated entirely by undead. After an attack, they accept safe conduct to Overlord 42, an Ascendant archlich who opposes three rulers building a vessel capable of carrying undead armies between worlds. He offers the location of Ryan's world, help containing Samvek's Hunger, instruction, and artifacts if the party sabotages the ship. The resulting oaths bind Overlord 42 more tightly than Silas's group. Before the mission, the archlich greatly improves Samvek's control of Hunger and teaches Silas to incorporate life mana into his aura. The plan is to teleport into the shipyard and place an antimatter weapon in the unfinished vessel. The group accepts the bargain as both a way off Deterious and a means of preventing a future multiversal invasion.

Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)

Overlord 42 inserts the party into the enemy shipyard. Violet uses her armor's computing systems to compromise the ship while the others fight through enhanced undead. Azuria destroys a major abomination, and Silas uses power gathered by Samvek to eliminate defenders and their phylacteries. At the engine-room breach, Silas and Selena create a new fused spatial and reality technique. Violet identifies the central power nexus, but Silas's antimatter weapon activates immediately instead of allowing the expected escape window. Lana arrives and freezes the detonation in time. An Ascendant archlich seizes control of the temporal effect and summons two peers, leaving Urg to hold all three while Silas evacuates Lana and Selena. Once Silas is away, Urg exceeds the limits of his usual manifested form, survives the blast, and permanently destroys the three archliches before returning to the astral plane to reform. The ship and several undead towers are destroyed. Overlord 42 honors the bargain, gives Silas Ryan's location, and offers future contact. Violet uses Lana's travel scroll to return to her own world, while the remaining group departs Deterious aboard Azuria.

Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)

Silas's party reaches Ryan's world in the middle of a battle between cultivators and Modrons. Their arrival helps force an orderly Modron withdrawal, and Silas reunites with his blood brother. The defenders face an unsustainable war because defeated Modrons eventually return. Talia and Dana organize triage while Silas expands his healing work, resurrecting thirty-seven cultivators and discovering that older deaths require a strong karmic connection to the dead. He then transforms his healing spell into a battlefield-wide effect and restores thousands of wounded allies. During the recovery, Lana and Selena settle their rivalry, Azuria begins teaching Ryan's wife Farah to use her red-dragon form, and Samvek helps another of Ryan's wives control a Hunger like his own. Silas senses a hostile mind in camp but is diverted by an unknown influence. Ryan explains that the enemy ruler is trapped at the Source Pool yet remains dominant within the Modron peak. Ryan has inherited the status of Secundi and may have a claim on part of the Modron host. With about a month before the next offensive, Silas proposes using a Ways seed and time manipulation to create an extended training opportunity.

Story so far - through chapter 39 (this book)

Urg helps Silas recognize that a curse has been erasing his awareness of an observer. After Silas removes it, a small team exposes the infiltrator as a Duchess of Hell. She attempts to flee and to compel infernal allies, but Ryan's coalition captures her. She admits that Asmodeus ordered her to watch Silas. A dangerous soul-level interrogation reveals both her assignment to assess his relationships and weaknesses and her private hope that he could free her from Hell's hierarchy. Lana places her in temporal suspension while Silas recovers. Ryan then permits Silas to plant a Ways seed in a defensible grove. The seed becomes a tree with healing and travel properties, and the coalition builds an experimental training enclosure around it. Silas combines his powers with Urg, Lana, Samvek, and Selena to create the Chronotope Pool. Time inside moves at a ratio of 125 to one, while Selena's reality magic shapes a twenty-mile interior into several useful biomes. More than forty people, including Ryan's family and selected cultivators, enter the sealed space. They gain roughly three years of training while only nine days are expected to pass outside.

Story so far - through chapter 49 (this book)

The group turns the Chronotope Pool into a settlement and begins structured training. Silas initially cannot reconcile his raw life force with cultivator life mana, but creates a new core and fuses it with his existing cultivator core. The hybrid can process both energies and later synchronizes with his Heavens-system class core. Lana reports that Earth is developing rapidly but that political factions are pressuring Jiang, Silas's appointed representative. She then volunteers to become Silas's second Horseman. Silas constructs meridians and a cultivator core for Lana without destroying her original class structure, establishing her as the Horseman representing the Divided Realms. Ryan teaches both of them cultivation, and Silas develops Purifying Flow, a life-mana technique that clears and improves another cultivator's channels. Selena chooses not to add a cultivator core, preferring to strengthen her existing path while remaining Silas's equal partner. Silas also studies glyphcraft with one of Ryan's wives. By combining intention-based glyphs, embedded runes, and an alloy made responsive to both systems, they produce gauntlets that allow several operators to control one of Silas's Mercury Mirror golems.

Story so far - through chapter 60 (this book)

The coalition devotes months of internal time to preparing for war. They manufacture 525 stone, magma, and temporal metal golems and enchant five thousand weapons through combined rune and glyph techniques. Ryan's Psy Clarity helps Silas understand the temporal patterns needed to finish Lana's elite iron golems. The sustained work leaves Silas depleted until his companions insist on a day of rest and a healthier pace. Ryan then trains him in Psy combat. Silas learns several disciplines, discovers how to increase and suppress his own Psy generation, absorbs ambient Psy, and eventually drains it from Ryan at range. He also improves his fusion with Urg and practices larger combinations with Selena, Samvek, and Lana. Throughout the enclosure, Purifying Flow accelerates the cultivators' progress. Ryan reaches SSS rank, as do several allies, including Dana, who becomes the first SSS-ranked healer in the Divided Realms. Farah masters dragon form, and Samvek and Ryan's vampiric wife gain firmer control of Hunger. When the three subjective years end, only nine outside days have passed. The force emerges with integrated power systems, completed golems and weapons, and far greater strength for the coming campaign.

Story so far - through chapter 65 (this book)

The allies emerge to find three portals poised above the army camp. The hostile ruler has placed a larger bounty on Ryan and threatened other factions into compliance, although celestial beasts opposed to that policy join the defense. Ryan displays his new SSS-rank power to rally the combined cultivator, soldier, golem, and celestial force. Demons attack first. The defenders suffer serious losses, but Ryan defeats their general and forces the surviving invaders back through their portal. An angel army immediately follows. The celestial beasts withdraw rather than fight their own kind, yet Silas's team and Ryan's strongest cultivators break the angelic command and drive away the survivors. Healing and resurrection restore many casualties, though those whose souls were destroyed remain dead. The final portal then releases nearly a quarter-million Modrons under several generals and a Tertian judge. Ryan refuses an offer to return as a Secundi. Silas creates three enchanted squirrel soul constructs that spread through the invading force and convert about 240,000 Modrons. He sends the converted host through the portal into Nirvana, where their continued propagation is blocked, and collapses from the strain.

Story so far - through chapter 69 (this book)

Silas survives the conversion strain with Urg's help, but gains a quest that rewards destroying most life on a world. Asmodeus raises him to a duke of Hell and assigns the captured Duchess as his vassal. Ryan uses the disruption in Nirvana to launch an immediate assault. Before joining it, Silas negotiates a strict contract with the Duchess that compels her full assistance and prevents betrayal. Under a new concealment spell, they enter Nirvana and assassinate five of its eight Tertian judges. Elsewhere, Samvek, Azuria, and Farah kill an Ascendant Hexton, while Selena, Lana, and Talia defend Ryan as he claims his inherited Secundi authority. Ryan succeeds by offering the Modrons freedom from compulsory law rather than replacing one form of control with another. His quarter accepts him and attacks a rival army, clearing the route to the central tower. The Duchess departs once her contract is fulfilled. At the tower, the Divided Realms ruler kills most of the accompanying founders. Silas diverts Psy from the ruler's source pool into Ryan, preventing the ruler from replenishing itself. Urg sacrifices his manifested body to protect Silas and returns to the astral plane, while Ryan begins the decisive fight.

Story so far - through chapter 72 (this book)

Silas continues draining Psy from the Divided Realms ruler and channeling it to Ryan until the advantage shifts. Rather than compete for divine control, Silas transfers humanity's claim to the Sysource Pool to his blood brother. Ryan uses that claim to defeat the ruler, which is unmade into the pool, and the system selects him as its replacement. Ryan defines his divinity through Freedom instead of neutral law. He is now bound to the Divided Realms while rewriting its rules, and he permits other gods to arise. Kumo and six allies become demigods. Ryan sends Kumo covertly to Earth to assist Silas and judge whether Silas's developing primordial nature threatens the realm. A Ways seed takes root in the Divided Realms, but Tad's work with Silas on the Infinity Key is postponed as the Ways also watches Silas. Elsewhere, Asta reverses a failed dragon-blood transformation in a volunteer, Overlord 42 tracks Silas through the archlich's summoning rod, and Jiang Bai rejects political agreements that would sacrifice Earth's autonomy. A European operator hires an off-world guild to investigate Silas and potentially kill him. The war is over, but Earth, Hell, the Infinity Key, and Silas's own changing nature remain unsettled. Silas closes the volume at level 353 with Unity at ten percent and his Trailblazer primordial aspect still sealed at 59 percent. Forging and enchanting the Infinity Key and completing the Reaper of Worlds quest remain active objectives.

How does it end? (ending)

Silas helps Ryan defeat the Divided Realms ruler by cutting off its ambient Psy and transferring humanity's claim on the Sysource Pool to Ryan. The old ruler is dissolved into that pool, and Ryan becomes the realm-bound god of Freedom. He begins changing the realm's laws and permits other gods to arise, while Kumo becomes a demigod and is sent secretly to Earth to aid and observe Silas. The Ways establishes a new connection to the Divided Realms, but work on the Infinity Key is delayed. Asmodeus retains authority over the Duchess of Hell despite her vassal bond to Silas, and Overlord 42 can still track Silas through the summoning rod. On Earth, Jiang Bai defends planetary autonomy while a European operator arranges off-world surveillance and a possible assassination attempt. Silas finishes at level 353 with Unity at ten percent and much of his primordial aspect still sealed. His obligations to the Ways, the Infinity Key, Earth, and the Reaper of Worlds quest remain unresolved.
