A powerful healer travelling south with Iona, Auri, and Fenrir. Elaine hides much of her strength and her biomantically altered chimera elvenoid nature while adjusting to a third class devoted to collecting and studying books.

Iona (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Elaine's partner, a Valkyrie who directs Fenrir in flight and shares responsibility for the travelling party's decisions.

Auri (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Elaine's bonded phoenix companion, travelling with the group on Fenrir. She rides on Fenrir's tail during their journey south.

Fenrir (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Iona's bonded frost-wyvern companion and the party's airborne transport. He carries the travellers and their supplies on the journey south and follows Iona's directions.

White Dove (Minor)

First appears in chapter 5

A phoenix known to Auri who is present during Auri's rebirth after a fatal lightning strike in the plague city.

Dormin (Supporting)

A city guard seeking promotion who witnesses a slain phoenix immediately return in another form. Drinking during the planned ambush of the unknown plague healer costs him his post, after which he resolves to hunt the resurrecting creature.

The Exterreri ranger who leads the team intercepting the airborne travellers. She questions their intention to immigrate, warns Elaine about local use of the Sentinel title, and permits the group to continue toward Sanguino.

An old vampire Elaine hopes to find in Exterreri. Her first inquiry produces no useful lead, leaving his location uncertain.

Marcella (Minor)

First appears in chapter 18

Elaine's biomancy mentor. A healer connected to Marcella helps Elaine navigate residence in Exterreri and provides a possible route for researching ancient vampire lineages.

Amber (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 19

Elaine's former apprentice, now an independent travelling merchant. She unexpectedly reunites with the group near Sanguino after following the guidance of a lucky coin.

Thread-controlling vampire (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 25

The extremely powerful vampire who controls the fine threads spread through Sanguino's underground routes. She captures Elaine during an unauthorized tunnel search and carries her to a hidden chamber beneath the bay.

Knight (Supporting)

Also known as Night, the puppeteer

First appears in chapter 27

The ancient vampire Elaine sought as Night, now confirmed to be the same person as the elusive puppeteer. Her former mentor recognizes her as Sentinel Dawn, welcomes her return, and explains that memory-locking helps him endure his long lifespan.

Black Crow

A figure whose attempt to claim Elaine's soul has failed before Elaine enters the Sentinel command meeting. No further identity or status is established.

Artemis (Supporting)

A returning associate from Elaine's past who works for the Hunters Guild and is engaged to Julius. Elaine includes her current circumstances while reporting what became of the group displaced from the Fae realm.

Julius (Supporting)

A returning associate from Elaine's past who works for the Hunters Guild and is engaged to Artemis. His disappearance into the Fae realm and rescue form part of Elaine's report to the assembled Sentinels.

Sentinel thread controller (Supporting)

The vampire Sentinel who controls Sanguino’s underground thread network and is married to Knight. She restrains and interrogates Elaine, then takes her to Knight after evidence supports Elaine’s account.

Mantle Mountain Radiance Worm (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 34

A level-620 creature occupying the mountain Eventide Eclipse hopes to claim. It moves through rock, manipulates stone and metal, regenerates, and attacks with Radiance, making it the central obstacle to the group's settlement plan.

Sentinel spymaster (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 36

The official who provides Iona with redacted records explaining past Shadow Sentinel interventions. The spymaster also offers Iona optional, paid assessments of people suspected of posing extraordinary dangers.

Devour (Supporting)

A Sentinel who refreshes Elaine on modern field procedures. Devour gains power and selected abilities from hunted creatures and can use cloaks made from their skins to assume other forms.

Flood (Supporting)

Also known as War Sentinel Flood

A War Sentinel studying lore-master duties alongside Elaine. She can manage several streams of information at once and joins Elaine for instruction concerning exceptionally dangerous knowledge.

Sentinel Archmage (Minor)

First appears in chapter 39

A tiny vampire Sentinel who was formerly a gnome. The Archmage arrives on behalf of Ranger Command with Elaine's accumulated back pay and a sealed letter from Sentinel Tyrannus.

Order Valkyrie (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 40

A Valkyrie of the surviving Order who is bonded to a Spinosaurus. During a civil war, they protect villages by attacking raiding parties separated from the main forces.

Kitsune street child (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 40

A twelve-year-old, nine-tailed kitsune with illusion abilities who approaches Iona after an attack on a Three Dragons Triad casino. She asks to become Iona's squire and is accepted on the condition that she abandon her Mugger class.
