After conflict with the Stormy Ocean Sect drives him from Tide's Rest, Sen searches for a purpose as a wandering cultivator. He rescues a stranded merchant, heals a dying woman at Luo Farm, and secures her household before resuming his journey. A spirit-beast ambush nearly kills him, and his growing reputation follows him to Emperor's Bay. There he befriends a Silver Crane cultivator, advances to late foundation formation, and defends the establishment from repeated Soaring Skies attacks. He exposes and captures a corrupt elder, forcing a truce and becoming publicly known as Feng Ming's disciple, Judgment's Gale. Evidence in the captive's possessions reveals a demonic-cultivator network. Sen entrusts the evidence to Soaring Skies, settles his affairs, and escapes by sea with his Silver Crane companion and Feng's watcher. Falling Leaf then risks an irreversible human transformation to pursue him.

Previously: Sen was raised and trained near Orchard's Reach by an unusual mountain family of powerful cultivators. Feng Ming became his master, Kho Jaw-Long taught him the spear, Caihong served as a trusted elder and healer, and Grandmother Lu provided both family ties and the commercial support of Heavenly Wares. Falling Leaf, a Ghost Panther, also became his companion. Their instruction gave Sen broad cultivation skills, practical alchemy, and experience with several forms of qi. It also left him with a small but dependable circle of people capable of understanding the dangers surrounding his path. Sen nevertheless chose to enter the wider world as an independent wandering cultivator rather than remain sheltered by their power. He begins this volume away from his teachers and guardians, carrying their training and values while testing his own judgment. Although he can draw on formidable techniques and practical knowledge, he has not yet decided what purpose should guide his cultivation or what place he should claim in the world beyond his former home.

Sen's attempt to find insight at the ocean is ruined when two Stormy Ocean Sect cultivators try to force him into a duel. He exposes their plan, overwhelms both women with killing intent, and spares them. After returning to Tide's Rest, another sect cultivator follows him from an inn and attacks through a populated street. Sen answers with a new lightning and killing-intent sword technique, Heaven's Rebuke, killing the pursuer before fleeing south under concealment. On the road he finds a young merchant abandoned with a broken wagon. Sen repairs it, makes the driver confront his neglect of both work and ox, and protects them from bandits. He refuses to kill opponents who no longer pose a threat. Once the driver is safely reunited with his family, Sen declares that the young man owes him a future debt. An unexplained inner pull then draws Sen west toward neglected farmland rather than onward along his planned route.

The inner pull leads Sen to Luo Farm, where a young woman is caring for her gravely ill mother without money for treatment. Sen stays to help despite his limited confidence as an alchemist. He controls the mother's pain, manages a dangerous fever, and discovers that a bone splinter lodged in her leg has sustained the infection. Removing it allows her recovery. As villagers begin seeking his medical help, Sen uses their payments and barter to supply livestock, seed, repairs, food, and labor to the farm. He also protects the daughter from predatory men, though she later persuades him to spare the father of an assailant who attacks in revenge. The experience teaches Sen that a long-lived wanderer cannot safely settle into a mortal household, but can still form limited bonds and return to help. He expands the home, strengthens the farm's prospects, gives the women farewell gifts, and leaves as a brother-like ally. Meanwhile, Stormy Ocean Sect investigators conclude that their own disciples caused the earlier conflict and begin seeking Sen to offer peace rather than revenge.

Traveling toward Emperor's Bay, Sen helps a Soaring Skies group capture wanted criminals but refuses to enter the sect or reveal his identity. Repeated chance meetings lead to limited cooperation, followed by another separation. Sen then enters a silent walled town and discovers that its emptiness conceals a spirit-beast trap. Boulder's Shadow, an ascended Ghost Panther, says a greater power compelled the attack and promises Sen freedom if he crosses the wall. Wounded and nearly drained of qi, Sen escapes with an uncontrolled Heaven's Rebuke that destroys part of the town and kills many beasts. Boulder's Shadow honors the bargain and retreats after learning that Feng Ming and Kho trained him. When the Soaring Skies travelers catch up, one fighter tries to steal Sen's kills. Sen defeats him and, applying the sect's own penalty for theft, severs his arm while preserving his life. Troubled by both that punishment and the destructive reach of his technique, Sen adopts a more deliberate approach: avoid needless conflict, de-escalate where possible, but remain capable of protection and healing as he continues toward Emperor's Bay.

Feng Ming has secretly assigned a core-formation watcher to track Sen, assist only when necessary, and build a protective reputation around the name Judgment's Gale. Unaware of this, Sen reaches Emperor's Bay and receives special hospitality at the Silver Crane, where Feng is patriarch. He befriends a qi-condensation cultivator employed there, identifies himself to her as Lu Sen, and helps her advance. At the ocean, Sen finally regains the insight that was interrupted near Tide's Rest and reaches late foundation formation. Their return is blocked by Soaring Skies members who demand his compliance and insult his companion. Sen injures one and prepares the Silver Crane for retaliation, closing it, evacuating those able to leave, and raising a barrier. A first attacking group threatens the people inside. Sen kills five attackers but spares a spearwoman to deliver a warning. The establishment remains fortified, and Sen expects the sect to answer the defeat with a stronger force.

Soaring Skies sends more cultivators against the Silver Crane. Sen kills the attackers, while the previously spared spearwoman refuses to fight because she owes him her life. A core-formation elder then arrives bearing signs of prohibited cultivation. When Sen exposes the corruption, the elder tries to murder the spearwoman as a witness. Sen defeats and captures him despite severe injuries. A senior investigator verifies the corruption and grants protection to the Silver Crane, ending the siege. Feng's watcher publicly identifies Sen as Feng Ming's disciple and as Judgment's Gale, turning his hidden connections into a deterrent but also attracting political attention. Sen accepts the watcher and the indirect safety that Feng's reputation provides. He begins using recovered wealth to invest in alchemy shops. Stormy Ocean's elder finally meets him to settle their dispute. Sen asks for reform in the sect's treatment of wandering cultivators and cultivation manuals for his Silver Crane companion rather than punishment or riches. The elder accepts those terms, closing the grievance.

Sen completes selected meetings with Emperor's Bay factions while refusing recruitment and avoiding mortal politics. He gives his Silver Crane companion the manuals secured for her and negotiates guarded settlements with Soaring Skies. While sorting storage rings taken during the siege, he discovers corrupted materials and a notebook naming members of a wider demonic-cultivator network. Feng's watcher confirms the danger and sends copied information to Feng Ming. Sen hands the original notebook and tainted resources to the investigating Soaring Skies elder, who warns that the network will hunt him. Because his companion could be used against him even if she remains behind, Sen tells her the truth and lets her choose. She elects to flee with him. After arranging his investments and other affairs, Sen joins her and Feng's watcher in a layered deception involving false bookings, blue-robed decoys, and commoner disguises. The three board an inconspicuous private ship and leave Emperor's Bay, with the watcher now providing close protection rather than distant observation.

At sea, Sen cares for his seasick Silver Crane companion while she studies her new manuals. He adapts his cultivation to the ship and discovers abundant earth qi far beneath the water, while his companion displays an easy affinity for water qi. Feng's watcher directs their evasion and explains that the vessel is traveling generally toward the southern coast, although they may disembark at any intermediate port. Their destination remains unsettled, pursuit is still possible, and a storm is approaching. Elsewhere, Feng Ming tells Falling Leaf that Sen exposed a demonic-cultivator network and is now likely to be hunted. Falling Leaf had previously avoided taking a human form because the change could permanently cost her panther body and senses. Determined to reach Sen among humans, she ignites her core and forces the transformation anyway. She achieves a human-passing form and collapses after insisting that Feng take her to Sen. The story ends with Sen's group still at sea, the demonic network active, and Falling Leaf's recovery and reunion attempt unresolved.

After finding a notebook that identifies a wider network of demonic cultivators, Sen gives the original evidence and tainted materials to the investigating Soaring Skies elder. Feng's watcher sends a copy to Feng Ming and remains close because retaliation is expected. Sen settles his investments, sets aside personal effects for return, and leaves Emperor's Bay by ship under a commoner disguise. His Silver Crane companion chooses to accompany him after receiving manuals, weapons, and a storage ring, while the watcher organizes decoys and directs the escape. Their vessel is traveling generally toward the southern coast, but they have no fixed destination and may leave at an intermediate port. Back with Feng Ming, Falling Leaf learns of the danger and ignites her core to assume a human-passing form, apparently sacrificing her former panther existence so she can seek Sen. Her recovery and reunion with him remain unresolved. The demonic network, the source of the spirit-beast compulsion, Sen's desert vision, and the wagon driver's debt all remain open.
