Previously: Sen founded Deep Wilds Academy and built a household around Liu Ai, the young girl he adopted as his daughter. Caihong and Kho are trusted elders who help protect her, while Falling Leaf is a spirit-beast companion with an obstructed Ghost Panther form. Feng is one of Sen's powerful teachers and remains tied to this extended family. Sen also carries an unresolved connection to Laughing River, an ancient nine-tailed fox who owes him a debt. The academy and household offer Sen a quieter purpose, but his growing cultivation strength and his reputation as Judgment's Gale keep drawing him back into wider conflicts. His concern for Liu Ai's future now shapes his choices, especially because his advancement may eventually separate him from mortal life. Questions surrounding spirit beasts remain unsettled, including Falling Leaf's blocked transformation and Laughing River's own affairs. At the opening of this volume, Sen must leave the relative safety of home and travel toward the capital while Caihong, Kho, and Falling Leaf remain with Liu Ai.

Sen travels toward the capital with an unnamed cultivator companion and a powerful spider spirit beast, avoiding roads because cultivators are searching for him. He aids vulnerable travellers but kills bandits and anyone who threatens those under his protection. Several pursuit groups attack. Sen destroys their leaders with lightning and sword work, while the spider independently hunts another group with qi webs. Long Jia Wei, a former sect cultivator who surrendered to protect his juniors, is allowed to accompany the party under conditional protection. In a town, Sen reunites with a righteous cultivator whose years of practical service have earned him a heroic reputation. The traveller reports that outsiders call Sen's academy a sect, including the Blue Demon sect, despite Sen's insistence that it is an academy. Sen briefly considers abandoning his obligations and returning to Liu Ai and the rest of his household. Instead, he accepts that an earlier promise and the need to secure teachers for the academy require him to continue. He releases the righteous cultivator from every debt and oath previously owed to him.

The righteous cultivator chooses to continue with Sen even after being freed, because the old command to live without regret had become his life's purpose. Near the capital, the party discovers a large prepared ambush led by a nascent-soul cultivator. Sen orders the spider companion to protect Shen Mingxia, Long Jia Wei, and the mortal ally while he confronts the leader. He kills much of the hidden force with killing intent and qi attacks, then fights the leader directly despite the gap between their cultivation stages. Both combatants are badly hurt. When the leader threatens Sen's companions, academy, town, and daughter, Sen releases an overwhelming power that freezes the remaining enemies in fear. Glimmer of Night, the spider companion's revealed name, drains the immobilized attackers with a selective web. Sen prevents the leader from escaping, cripples him with Heaven's Rebuke, and executes him using lightning infused with divine qi. He then destroys the remaining force and extinguishes the resulting fires. The organized assassination attempt ends with Sen injured and depleted, but unmistakably victorious over an opponent who should have outclassed him.

After the battle, Sen treats his party's injuries and completes the journey without another attack. Shen Mingxia acknowledges that witnessing him kill a nascent-soul cultivator has permanently changed their friendship. Royal guards meet the group at the capital and publicly escort Judgment's Gale through the city, ensuring that nobles, sects, and foreign visitors all know he has arrived. The king provides a guarded inn, while Sen sends Long Jia Wei to gather intelligence and goes to the palace. In the throne room, Sen openly confronts the leader of the noble house linked to the assassination. He privately tells the king that he intends to destroy that house. The king wants Sen to remain in the capital as an unpredictable deterrent against dangerous foreign cultivators. Sen agrees only after turning the bargain toward Liu Ai's long-term security. He proposes replacing the condemned house with a hereditary house under his own control, built to support his adopted daughter even after he can no longer remain beside her. The king accepts. Sen will eliminate the assassination plotters but spare children and ordinary staff, while the defeated house's titles, property, and operations pass to his new house.

Sen attacks the implicated noble manor after its leader admits that the assassination was part of a plan to weaken the king and seize the throne. He defeats the guards, spares the children, and has the royal decree read to the assembled household. The old house is dissolved and its property becomes Sen's new House of Lu. Long Jia Wei executes identified conspirators, while Sen kills the former leader and any adults whose required heavenly vows fail. Surviving adults lose their wealth and status but may seek employment if they have useful skills. A young servant swears herself directly to Sen and becomes a trusted administrative retainer. Sen retains willing staff, provides for the families of dead guards, and begins taking responsibility for the displaced children. He then rebuilds the manor walls and creates interlocking formations inspired partly by Glimmer of Night's webs. The result is a formidable defense that attracts a public audience. During a search of hidden spaces, Sen and Long Jia Wei discover an intact underground cultivator lair filled with manuals, formations, alchemical supplies, rare plants, and wealth. Sen regards discovery of the cache as a grave security risk and binds Long Jia Wei to secrecy with a heaven-accepted vow.

House of Lu's fortified manor changes how nobles and sects judge Sen. Lo Meifeng confronts him for excluding her from his plans, then joins him as the strategic adviser needed to build security, intelligence, and control over distant holdings. Sen explains that the house exists to protect Liu Ai after his eventual ascension and considers developing Deep Wilds Academy into a true sect for the same purpose. He can already advance to nascent soul but delays because he wants more time with his daughter. At a royal gathering, Sen attends with Shen Mingxia, meets a foreign ambassador, and decisively subdues another ambassador who threatens his companion. Lai Dongmei arrives, publicly treats Sen as her lover, and identifies the first ambassador as a princess. Sen's power and his friendship with the king become obvious to the court. The foreign princess seeks a private alliance with Sen and asks him to leave the capital with her. At a secluded spirit-ox herd, she admits that she wants to overthrow her father and rule in his place. Sen refuses because her program would expand freedom for cultivators while preserving mortal subjugation. He forces her to confront the fear her ruling class creates, then rejects slaughter as a solution and sends her away without his help. Rumors about their excursion create diplomatic and romantic complications that Lo Meifeng and Sen's grandmother must manage. At Deep Wilds Academy, Feng Ming arrives, meets Liu Ai, and observes that the school trains mortal men and women in weapons while some students are developing rudimentary cultivation-like practices. In the capital, Sen accepts that hired sects are necessary to secure House of Lu's distant property and begins reconsidering some of his blanket hostility toward sects. Before he can return north, an explosion tears through the manor courtyard. It carries no detectable qi and bypasses every formation, killing and maiming mortal staff. Sen organizes rescue and treatment, attempts to restore lost limbs and eyes, and orders Lo Meifeng to find everyone responsible for the attack.

The manor survivors explain that the bomb arrived as a food delivery using a stolen access talisman. Long Jia Wei identifies the explosive as a mixture made through mortal alchemy, revealing both a defense flaw and a weapon that produces no qi warning. The severely wounded staff swear personal allegiance to Sen after his emergency healing, deepening his sense of responsibility for them. Lo Meifeng's investigation captures the talisman thief, and a noble matriarch supplies intelligence linking a rival patriarch to the attack. Sen limits his response to the responsible people instead of destroying another entire house. He overcomes the rival manor's guards, poison, and crossbow trap, then forces the patriarch to confess that his house delivered the explosive while others supplied the bomb and the method for bypassing the formations. A captured foundation-formation intermediary links the wider plot to earlier attacks. Meanwhile, the king sends a trusted royal attendant to ask when Sen's reprisals will end. She explains that she fears Sen because he once altered her panic without consent. Sen apologizes and swears a heavenly oath that he cannot impose complex emotions. As restitution, she asks him to make her a cultivator and accepts a dangerous, experimental process that requires leaving royal service and travelling north with him.

Sen studies the bombing mixture and develops a far stronger non-qi explosive. He decides that spreading the formula would endanger mortals and destabilize warfare, so he hides the superior version even from his teachers while retaining it as an emergency weapon. He uses lesser explosives in a deliberately public campaign against the captured bombers. With his grandmother present to demonstrate House unity, Sen executes the man who lit the fuse and allows the manor community to kill other direct participants. He then stages a second execution outside the manor for witnesses from the palace, sects, and noble houses, turning the reprisals into a deterrent. The captured intermediary says surviving demonic cultivators used her after she pursued someone who had previously betrayed her. Those targets have escaped, and she cannot identify the demonic cultivator. Sen leaves her survival and possible employment to Lo Meifeng. With the direct campaign complete, he prepares to leave the capital. The defeated house's children will travel north, lose their noble privileges, and receive civilian education rather than military training. Sen's grandmother arranges their transport and supplies while Sen plans new instructors, formation work, and funding for the academy.

Before departure, Sen collects custom formation flags and fulfills a promise by preparing tailored advancement elixirs for their makers. He auctions natural treasures to fund House of Lu, hires basic educators, and recruits weapons instructors for Deep Wilds Academy. Among them is a highly skilled core-formation archer whose long life, accumulated grief, and dependence on alcohol make him an uncertain choice. The archer begins the journey sober and treats teaching as a possible new purpose. Sen also accepts a woman recommended through Lo Meifeng only after binding vows make her compliance enforceable. The displaced noble children receive one final evening with their parents before being placed in the caravan. Sen departs with the children, educators, guards, weapons staff, Long Jia Wei, Shen Mingxia, and Glimmer of Night. Lo Meifeng, Sen's grandmother, and the capital steward remain behind with delegated authority over House of Lu. The house survives as a wealthy and fortified political force, but the escaped demonic attackers and the unknown source of the manor-defense breach remain unresolved. Sen's departure ends his immediate capital campaign and shifts responsibility toward the academy's expansion in the north.

The core-formation archer stays sober and proves useful by detecting an ambush. Sen kills the waiting bandits and hides the aftermath from the children. Near Deep Wilds Academy, Long Jia Wei persuades Sen to leave the caravan in the hands of its other defenders. Glimmer of Night stays with the wagons for the final leg and claims one as his own. Sen carries selected treasures and keeps the hidden lair's manual and resources secret from the unfamiliar travellers. He reaches home first and reunites with Liu Ai, Caihong, Kho, Falling Leaf, and Feng. The caravan and its new staff are still approaching, so housing and integration remain unfinished. Feng then tells Sen that he has identified the cause of the spirit-beast disturbance, but does not yet explain it.

He leaves the caravan shortly before it reaches Deep Wilds Academy and reunites with Liu Ai, Caihong, Kho, Falling Leaf, and Feng. Glimmer of Night stays with the caravan for its last leg. Sen still conceals the manor's resource lair, rare manuals, and his superior explosive formula. The incoming children require separate housing and supervision, and House of Lu's political future remains unsettled.
