Sen (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

A homeless boy in Orchard's Reach who steals food to survive and shares what he has with Grandmother Lu. He has no family or reliable shelter, but he is resourceful enough to evade local nobles and remains devoted to the one person who cares for him.

Grandmother Lu (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Sen's elderly benefactor and only reliable familial comfort. Though poor herself, she shares food and occasional shelter with him.

Feng

First appears in chapter 2

A formidable outside cultivator whose presence weighs heavily on the people of Orchard's Reach. He notices Sen despite the boy's hiding place.

Feng Ming (Supporting)

Also known as Feng

First appears in chapter 4

The full name of the outside cultivator who chose Sen as his disciple. Feng Ming provides for Grandmother Lu and leaves Orchard's Reach with Sen to begin the boy's training.

Orchard's Reach mayor (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 3

The local official who presents favored youths for Feng's consideration while excluding poor children from the opportunity. Feng punishes him for that exclusion after selecting Sen, leaving the mayor publicly humiliated.

Jiang Hao (Antagonist)

Also known as the mayor's son

First appears in chapter 5

The mayor's son and one of the privileged youths passed over when Feng selects Sen. He waits near the town gate with other rejected candidates, regarding the poor outsider as the cause of their rejection and directing his resentment at him.

Ghost Panther (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 7

A large spirit beast able to blend into the landscape. She approaches Feng's camp without attacking, accepts a peach from Sen with care, and begins a cautious companionship built around shared food and mutual restraint.

Kho Jaw-Long (Supporting)

Also known as Kho, Jaw-Long

First appears in chapter 12

Feng's longtime friend and the resident of the mountain manor where Sen will train. After a feigned confrontation, Kho Jaw-Long welcomes Sen, evaluates his unusual concealment, and undertakes to teach him to read.

Falling Leaf (Supporting)

Also known as Ghost Panther

First appears in chapter 25

The Ghost Panther who has accompanied Sen through years of training, now known by the name she gives for herself. She is an intelligent and independent spirit beast, a trusted companion rather than a pet, and has already guided Sen toward understanding his inner energy.

Ma Caihong (Supporting)

Also known as Caihong

First appears in chapter 27

Kho's wife and an old acquaintance of Feng who arrives during the dispute over Sen's proposed mountain trial. She challenges the plan to send Sen into danger on the mountain.

Laughing River (Minor)

First appears in chapter 44

An intelligent, multi-tailed red spirit fox acquainted with Caihong. She leads Sen to a rare blossom, trades it for an unspecified future favor, and entrusts him with New Year wishes that Sen must carry back to Caihong.

Senior household servant (Minor)

First appears in chapter 60

A servant in Grandmother Lu's household who recognizes Sen as her cultivator grandson and receives him with marked deference.

Large indebted fighter (Minor)

First appears in chapter 64

An unarmed cultivator accompanying Jiang Hao whose family is bound by a large debt. He refuses to join the group attack on Sen, wants the freedom to travel as a wandering cultivator, and accepts Sen's offer to clear the obligation after a test of skill.

Lynn (Minor)

First appears in chapter 68

Grandmother Lu's household maid, responsible for preparing her morning tea.

Mayor's son's teacher (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 70

A Foundation Formation blade cultivator who publicly challenges Sen to a death duel in retaliation for Jiang Hao's defeat. He is physically powerful and makes clear that he will not accept a peaceful end to the dispute.

Surviving hired cultivator (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 74

One of the Foundation Formation cultivators in a five-person night assault on Grandmother Lu's shop. This attacker survives Sen's counterattack and is positioned to identify the employer.
