Unintended Cultivator, Volume Seven recap

Sen settles near a vulnerable town while caring for the orphaned Liu Ai, repairing his relationship with Falling Leaf, and learning shadow cultivation from a nascent-soul instructor. His efforts to prepare mortals for spirit-beast attacks grow into an inclusive weapons academy for mortals and cultivators. The town survives a bearcat assault, and Sen recruits instructors while powerful elders help stabilize his household. He eventually enters the Shadow Realm, but divine qi makes the technique unusually dangerous. When lightning-sect cultivators attempt to inspect the academy, Sen kills their leader and expels the survivors. Elsewhere, Laughing River begins a violent purge among the foxes, while Feng Ming crushes a spirit-beast army and warns its king to end attacks on humans. At the close, Liu Ai calls Sen Papa. Sen leaves her with Falling Leaf, Kho, and Caihong, places Wu Meng Yao in charge of the academy, and departs for the capital with Glimmer of Night and a human companion.

Previously: Sen became a powerful wandering cultivator with close ties to Falling Leaf and formidable allies including Feng, Kho, and Caihong. He acquired the epithet Judgment's Gale and survived a confrontation with a true devil, though he cannot be certain that enemy was destroyed. His travels also created obligations to the nine-tailed fox Laughing River and brought him into contact with Laughing River's granddaughter, Misty Peak. The possible survival of the devil remains unresolved as this volume begins.

Sen reunites Falling Leaf with the foxes Laughing River and Misty Peak, then pauses his own concerns to save a logger trapped beneath a tree. His return to the inn reveals that Falling Leaf has violently repelled men who tried to seize her. Sen is also struggling with responsibility for an orphaned girl, assisted by Glimmer of Night and a nascent-soul cultivator who begins teaching him shadow travel. When Falling Leaf disappears with Laughing River, Sen's anger becomes dangerous enough to threaten the child he means to protect. He restrains himself, and Falling Leaf soon returns. Laughing River explains that he tried and failed to restore her Ghost Panther form because an unknown force blocks the transformation. Sen gives him the spatial treasure required for his overdue ascension but condemns taking Falling Leaf without warning. Laughing River departs with the treasure, leaving their trust damaged and Falling Leaf's condition unexplained.

Falling Leaf challenges Sen's attempt to control her choices, and their serious fight forces him to acknowledge that fear does not justify denying her independence. Soon afterward, spirit beasts attack the nearby town. Sen organizes mortal defenders instead of doing everything himself, kills the strongest beast, treats the wounded, and encourages the town to buy proper weapons with the beast cores. The attack appears connected to wider abnormal spirit-beast activity. As he studies shadow qi, Glimmer of Night's inherited web patterns give Sen new ideas, and his instructor helps him develop stable, self-sustaining shadow constructs. Meanwhile, Sen teaches the orphaned girl and Glimmer of Night to write. Townspeople ask him for weapons training, so he reluctantly creates a training yard and pushes a veteran former soldier toward local leadership. He also repairs his friendship with Falling Leaf by making time for her and inviting her into the child's daily life. Shadow walking itself remains beyond him.

The orphaned girl is now identified as Liu Ai. Sen makes the training hall explicitly open to women, men, and children, appoints the veteran spear instructor as its mortal leader, and continues improving both the facility and its students. Two cultivators arrive, one at core formation and one at foundation formation. The core cultivator seeks to repay a perceived debt to Sen, but he initially invents a hazardous treasure quest to make her leave. Before that plan can unfold, six bearcats attack. The mortal teams use their training to kill all six without fatalities, although Sen and the visitors intervene to prevent several deaths. Glimmer of Night then supplies the layered-reality model that lets Sen understand the basis of shadow walking. The nascent-soul instructor admits her uncontrolled killing intent may endanger Liu Ai, so Sen decides the child can no longer stay at her residence. Elsewhere, Caihong and Jaw-Long set out after receiving Sen's letter, while Laughing River begins executing foxes he considers traitors and moves toward Emperor's Bay.

Growing cultivator interest forces Sen to decide what his training project should become. Caihong and Kho arrive, bringing practical support and powerful attention. Kho assesses the mortal trainees, while Sen recognizes that control over armed townspeople could make him look like a local ruler. He rejects both that path and the obligations of a sect, choosing instead to found a weapons academy for mortals and cultivators. Its rules prohibit abuse of mortals, keep cultivation instruction outside its mission, and allow useful service to offset high cultivator fees. Sen abandons the fictitious mountain quest and persuades the core-formation visitor to become a sword instructor. He also promises tailored advancement help to her foundation-formation companion. The academy's first cultivator applicants test its standards: Sen forces one man to apologize for belittling a weaker woman and offers that woman guidance for a breakthrough. A pale, blue-eyed core cultivator also seeks Sen as both teacher and companion, but Falling Leaf recognizes her possessive agenda and Sen rejects it.

The academy becomes a lasting institution with an inclusive admissions policy, mortal literacy and physical training, and a climate formation installed by Kho. A royal messenger summons Sen to a court gathering, and Sen chooses the foundation-formation visitor as his companion for the trip. His shadow training finally succeeds when he suppresses the divine qi embedded in his skin and enters the Shadow Realm. Repeated practice proves that the technique is usable, but overstaying or choosing a poor exit can kill him, and his divine qi makes every transition harder. Before he can leave, three cultivators from a lightning-marked sect arrive and claim the right to inspect the academy. Their leader has a past relationship with the resident sword instructor. When one companion admits the inspection's purpose, Sen makes him acknowledge that a sect would treat the same intrusion as a capital offense. Sen kills the leader and expels the other two, leaving the sect's authorization and likely response uncertain.

Sen claims the dead sect leader's treasures and explains the confrontation to the mortal students, but their new fear of him exposes a social distance he cannot remove. Falling Leaf convinces him that respectful caution may protect mortals in future encounters with cultivators. Sen then prepares the academy for his absence. Kho agrees to teach lower-level spear students and tells Sen that his own next spear form must be personally created. The resident sword instructor receives authority over the academy, while other cultivator students are ordered to follow her direction. Caihong warns that the king may try to use Sen's power, prompting him to consider limits on what friendship requires. Elsewhere, Li Yi Nuo reaches Orchard's Reach seeking someone connected to Sen's spear training, only to learn that the contact has gone west. Feng Ming kills an ancient dragon, destroys a gathered spirit-beast force, and releases a serpent envoy with an ultimatum for its king: stop attacks on human settlements or face war with human cultivators.

Sen confirms that Wu Meng Yao is an effective sword instructor and publicly entrusts the academy to her. At a final household gathering, Glimmer of Night reveals that he has learned to assume the appearance of a young human man and asks to join the capital journey. Kho and Caihong also explain that Sen's repeated refusal of advances from Laughing River's granddaughter carries an unintended courtship meaning among the foxes. Sen refuses to bring Liu Ai into the dangers of the capital and assures her that Falling Leaf, Kho, and Caihong will keep her safe. Liu Ai calls him Papa for the first time. Despite Fu Ru Lan's warning, Sen chooses to honor his promise to the king, who has an unspecified role planned for him. He leaves for the capital with Glimmer of Night and a human companion. The academy continues under Wu Meng Yao, but the fox conflict, spirit-beast campaign, sect consequences, Falling Leaf's blocked transformation, and Sen's hazardous shadow cultivation all remain open.

Sen leaves for the capital to honor the king's summons, accompanied by Glimmer of Night in human form and an unidentified human companion. Liu Ai remains behind after calling Sen Papa for the first time. Falling Leaf, Kho, and Caihong accept responsibility for her safety. Wu Meng Yao takes charge of the academy, and Kho will cover its lower-level spear instruction. The academy is functioning and the town can now mount an organized defense, but its staffing and relations with nearby sects remain unsettled. The lightning sect may retaliate for its leader's death. Falling Leaf still cannot regain her Ghost Panther form, Laughing River's fox purge and ascension remain unresolved, and the spirit-beast king has only been warned off. Sen can enter the Shadow Realm, though divine qi and unsafe exits make the technique potentially lethal. He also has not decided how far he will support the king politically, and the role awaiting him in the capital is unknown.
