In short (whole book)
With his mana foundation still devastated, Joe pursues both personal restoration and a contract to find Jotunheim's World Boss. He converts the damaged divine skill Knowledge into the arcane Loremaster skill, recruits specialists for a dangerous repair procedure, and creates Joe to Go, a teleportation network whose birth draws the Jotunn toward the Wanderers. Joe crosses the sixth characteristic threshold but gains a corruption that drains characteristics whenever he uses mana. His ritualists build permanent mountain defenses, Fari's expedition kills the Jotunn, and the Wanderers defeat the accompanying monster assault. Joe uses the expedition's first mythic core to evolve an alchemy building, then returns to Vanaheim. Master Surge kills him after an unprovoked attack, bringing sanctions against the Tower of Blood Rites. Joe fulfills his mythic-core obligation to Grandmaster Pete and enters a large restoration ritual, but the outcome is not shown.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Joe's mana foundation was severely damaged, leaving his active magic restricted while he pursued a way to restore it.
Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)
Joe's mana foundation remains only partly restored, and Grandmaster Snow concludes that conventional treatment could take decades. Joe ends that course of study and continues training Wanderers ritualists on Jotunheim while designing his own solution. Grandmaster Fari asks him to create a lasting means of locating and reaching the elusive Jotunn. After negotiation, Joe accepts a contract that awards him the first mythic core and binds his system to remain operational until Fari's expedition obtains a second one. Queen CleoCatra identifies another part of Joe's problem: Tatum owes him a vast karmic debt that attracts dangerous circumstances. She explains that Joe must repair the divine injury himself and reach the seventh characteristic threshold for a lasting recovery. Joe suspends his chosen title and accepts a plan to reduce the debt through independent major works and the conversion of a divine skill into an arcane one. Sage Mirascible confirms that Joe needs combat and growth rather than continued caution. He warns against prematurely completing a Midgard quest that could release another World Boss, then advises Joe to pursue Fari's offer.
Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)
Joe seeks alchemical help from Jake, who finds the proposed recovery ichor unsafe and takes a major favor to redesign it. Training raises Joe's alchemical ability, but his damaged channels prevent master-rank creation. Meanwhile, Gage reaches mastery and attempts to draw trainees away from Joe's jumping program. Joe resolves the dispute by making Gage an instructor and promising eventual help with a separate school. In the wilderness, Joe creates a mana-disrupting formation and proves that it can interfere with monster abilities. The experiment helps produce a tyrant-class penguin whose growing flock forms a natural ritual. Observing that formation gives Joe a broken master sutra that can combine fragments from several rituals, along with an idea for controlling its output. Master Donvah's Tower of Defenders force then demands Joe's possible World Boss research. The entire force suddenly falls under an unidentified compulsion and attacks without regard for survival. Joe holds them off with prepared defenses until their emergency teleportation removes them, then travels farther into the wilds. The party controlling Donvah's force remains unknown.
Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)
Using the last protection of his karmic shroud, Joe enters a symbolic view of his mind and begins rebuilding the nearly destroyed divine skill Knowledge. He feeds increasingly powerful aspects into an internal ritual until the skill stabilizes and transforms into Loremaster, an arcane master skill. This conversion advances CleoCatra's plan for reducing Tatum's debt. Joe delegates the physical parts of his channel reconstruction. Grandmaster McPoundy agrees to forge the injection equipment after Joe fulfills an overdue promise by building him a proper forge. Cosmo Hollows is selected for the mathematical matrix. In Vanaheim, Mak investigates Joe's cheese currency while Master Surge and nine Blood Rites masters force Joe into an honor fight over a suspected mythic core. They kill him, but his death releases a mana detonation around them. Joe later begins gathering Tower of Rituals students. Jenny helps organize the applicants, and Joe reaches an enchanter called Master Darling for possible help with the repair. The wider conflict around mythic cores and access through Vanaheim continues.
Story so far - through chapter 28 (this book)
Hilda Darling agrees to design the enchanted-token portion of Joe's repair in exchange for instruction. Her solution allows only seven major skill changes and cannot be activated during a characteristic transition. Joe's teaching produces a breakthrough for his Jotunheim transport design: a recursive system will create teleportation pads and send summoned fish to carry them across the world. His instruction also spreads through students who can teach others. Cosmo Hollows receives a master Lore book and supplies the matrix formula for correcting Joe's broken mana flows. Grandmaster Pete offers to conduct the eventual five-part procedure, while Hilda completes most of its tokens. Jake finishes the custom ichor but payment is deferred until Joe uses it, and Grandmaster McPoundy delivers the artifact injection device. The Wanderers have become a sect whose mission includes exploration, infrastructure, and the eventual rebuilding of Earth. Joe chooses the teleportation network as a safer grandmaster-scale trial before attempting the personal repair. By the end of his work in the protected hall, its major systems are designed, though the network has not yet been built.
Story so far - through chapter 35 (this book)
Joe recruits hundreds of Wanderers to activate his planetary transport ritual. Devoe and the other ritualists remain linked to him through a long monster attack and share the final legendary lightning strike. The completed pseudo-legendary headquarters, Joe to Go, converts discarded material into mana and aspects, then sends out teleportation pads. The network rapidly establishes working routes among the sect's mountains. Its creation also reveals its position to the Jotunn, which begins moving to destroy it. Joe crosses the sixth characteristic threshold by choosing Monarch of Mana as his foundation. The choice counts as another major work independent of Tatum, but it brings Corrupted Characteristics: mana use can temporarily remove characteristic points until death resets the losses or the seventh threshold clears the condition. Fari arrives with an expedition and confirms that the Jotunn carries a wider monster ecosystem. Joe's network can track the World Boss by observing which pads it destroys. The Wanderers mobilize across worlds, build defensive towers, and prepare evacuation routes. Joe continues spending mana on the defenses even as the corruption leaves him increasingly vulnerable.
Story so far - through chapter 43 (this book)
Joe brings a large group of ritualists to his Midgard workshop, where the combined coven designs three permanent defenses for his Jotunheim mountain. Under Devoe's direction, the group becomes capable of completing major work without Joe. A corruption backlash kills Joe during construction, but the coven finishes a second design while he respawns. Joe creates renewable mana units, and the ritualists activate a layered barrier, mountain reinforcement, and an element-changing weapon. Fari's expedition attacks the arriving Jotunn with a vast meteor. The blast drives debris and thousands of monsters toward the sect, but Joe's barrier shields his peak. Other mountains take severe damage. Joe conceals his karmic beacon to divert monsters from his position and exposes a camouflaged legendary titan attacking the main mountain with lethal miasma. The Wanderers sect leader draws power from the membership and kills that titan, breaking the coordinated assault. The surviving defenders clear the remaining monsters, the network gains protection from direct monster targeting, and the sect's territory doubles. Joe's infrastructure and defensive community survive their first major territorial war.
Story so far - through chapter 47 (this book)
The Wanderers process the fallen titan into resources for the expanding teleportation network, while their leader departs to pursue a legendary specialization. Fari then delivers the first mythic core from the defeated Jotunn. Joe uses it within the required time to evolve his alchemy building, leaving the tracking-and-transport agreement active until Fari's expedition obtains a second core. Jake returns the materials held under their arrangement, and Joe travels to Vanaheim. Rival factions detain Joe because residue suggests that he may carry a mythic core, but Fari's letter proves he has already used it. Joe hires escorts with cheese supplied through Mak. Master Surge and a large Blood Rites force block the route to the Tower of Rituals. After Joe refuses a personal duel, Surge attacks, kills several escorts, and kills Joe before Grandmaster Pete can intervene. The system sanctions the Tower of Blood Rites. A courier delivers Joe's separate mythic core to Pete, completing that obligation. Pete postpones his own advancement while roughly two thousand Tower of Rituals participants assemble for Joe's five-part restoration procedure. The procedure uses Hilda Darling's tokens, Grandmaster McPoundy's injector, and Cosmo Hollows's matrix formula. Joe enters the ritual pod. The book closes before the attempted repair and augmentation of his Akashic record produces a result.
How does it end? (ending)
The Wanderers survive the Jotunheim assault, retain their teleportation network, and gain additional territory after the sect leader kills the legendary titan attacking the main mountain. Fari's expedition defeats the Jotunn and gives Joe the first mythic core, which he immediately spends to evolve his alchemy building. The World Boss begins its respawn cycle, and Joe must maintain the tracking and transport system until Fari's group earns a second core. In Vanaheim, Master Surge attacks after Joe refuses a duel, kills several escorts, and kills Joe before he can reach safety. The Tower of Blood Rites receives system sanctions. Joe completes his separate mythic-core obligation to Grandmaster Pete, but still owes support for Pete's advancement. Pete postpones that advancement while roughly two thousand Tower of Rituals participants assemble for Joe's five-part procedure. The procedure uses Hilda Darling's tokens, Grandmaster McPoundy's injector, and Cosmo Hollows's matrix formula to repair and improve Joe's damaged Akashic record, but the book ends before its result. Joe also remains short of completing the work needed to reduce Tatum's karmic debt, while Jake's custom ichor is still subject to its payment agreement.
