Wei Shi Lindon is a young man of the Wei clan in Sacred Valley, born Unsouled: his spirit was judged too weak to follow any sacred artist's Path, marking him as the lowest of the low in a rigid, honor-bound society. Barred from real cultivation, he compensates with relentless study, cunning, and a willingness to bend rules his neighbors will not, hoarding scraps of forbidden knowledge and old techniques. Ambitious far beyond his station, he dreams of becoming strong despite everyone's certainty that he never can. He is unfailingly polite on the surface, calculating underneath, and driven by a stubborn refusal to accept the limits placed on him.

Lindon's older sister, a gifted young sacred artist of the Wei clan whose steady progress stands in sharp contrast to Lindon's status as an Unsouled. She is capable and well regarded where he is dismissed, but she never treats him with the contempt others show, remaining one of the few people in Sacred Valley who believes in him. Her success is both a comfort to Lindon and a quiet reminder of everything the clan insists he can never be.

A sacred beast that serves as an advisor to the Wei clan, ancient and soft-spoken, with knowledge far exceeding that of ordinary Sacred Valley elders. Where most of the valley writes Lindon off, Whisper speaks with him plainly and takes his questions seriously, offering guidance others will not. The creature hints that the world beyond the valley is far larger and stranger than its sheltered people believe.

A being of almost unimaginable power from far beyond Sacred Valley, calm and detached, who arrives in the course of a much larger purpose. Taking notice of Lindon, she shows him a vision of how vast the world truly is and how small and fragile his home is by comparison, revealing that his valley and everyone in it face destruction. She heals him, leaves him a small keepsake, and challenges him to grow strong enough to change that fate. Her brief presence reframes everything Lindon thought he understood about his life and his limits.

A powerful sword artist from outside Sacred Valley and the master of Yerin, far stronger than anything the valley has produced. He arrives pursuing his own ends and brings the dangers of the wider world with him, upending the valley's fragile order. His fate leaves his disciple Yerin alone and adrift, setting her on a path that crosses Lindon's.

A young, battle-hardened sword artist from beyond Sacred Valley, the disciple of the Sword Sage and already far more experienced in real combat than anyone Lindon knows. Blunt, fierce, and practical, she carries the marks of a harsh life spent training and fighting, and she bears a dangerous inheritance tied to her master's art: a parasitic blood-madra presence bound to her that she must constantly keep in check. Left without her master, she and Lindon recognize in each other a shared drive to grow strong, and she becomes his first true companion.
