Continuing the series, Joe arrives with his companions in the seemingly deserted world-city of Anaheim, where entry to its towering guild halls requires solving locked magical or mechanical puzzles rather than force. As Socar and Heartpiercer are each drawn into separate towers for specialized training, Joe pursues the poorly regarded Tower of Rituals and passes its entrance trials with a near-perfect score. His admission draws unusual attention once he reveals that Ritualist is his base class, an unprecedented combination given the Tower's history of never producing a Sage. Competing sponsors offer him training in exchange for future favors, and the tower's Grandmaster eventually proposes sponsorship and advanced instruction in return for a rare mythic core - a demand entangled with a rival tower's honor challenge against the Tower of Rituals itself.
