In short (whole book)

Joe travels to Vanaheim and earns sponsorship from Grandmaster Pete, accepting a binding obligation to obtain a mythic core. Back on Midgard, Ardania ends his exile and grants him authority to claim land and raise his guild. He restores Boris as curator of the Pathfinder's Hall, trains his ritualist coven, establishes a duchy administered by the Golden Greens, and secretly secures an artifact core. A hostile coalition corrupts the planned city-and-sect upgrade into a legendary-monster trial against Game Over. Joe's prepared storm fails to finish it, so he detonates his own mana pool inside the monster, killing himself and Lindon. Joe respawns, the settlement becomes sect territory, and the Pathfinder's Hall reaches legendary rank. Game Over leaves the Cauldron of Avarice, which holds its consumed victims. A rescue attempt frees Ed but shatters Joe's Mass Resurrection Aura and ruptures his mana pathways, leaving him to rebuild his magic while leading the new sect.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Joe became a powerful Ritualist, Ritual Architect, and Reductionist aligned with the deity Tatum. His experiments and association with occultist work led to exile from Ardania and damaged the standing of Boris, the scholar who had supported him. Joe nevertheless helped defeat the Wolfman Nation and strengthened Ardania's position. He also established ties to the Wanderers Guild and owns the Pathfinder's Hall, a structure that records class information. Joe's travels have taken him beyond Midgard to higher worlds, where greater advancement is possible but carries new obligations and dangers.

Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)

Joe, Heartpiercer McShootypants, Socar, and Nimue arrive in the uniform city of Vanaheim, without a guide or local currency. Socar solves a formation entrance and enters the Tower of Formations with Nimue. Heartpiercer later opens the Tower of Bowman, leaving Joe to seek the Tower of Rituals. Joe clears its layered entrance tests with an exceptional score and reveals his rare combination of Ritualist, Ritual Architect, and Reductionist. Grandmaster Pete offers Joe sponsorship and access to advanced teachers. The proposed price is a mythic core, an essential and scarce resource for Sage advancement. After an initial loyalty test, Pete adds training from Sage Mirascible and support for Joe's eventual class-Sage bid. Joe accepts, becoming bound by repayment and blood-feud consequences if he fails. The Tower of Blood Rites then challenges Pete's tower for honor. Pete and Istvan fight to a timed draw, which lets the defending Tower of Rituals retain its standing. The duel also exposes Joe's lack of formal ritual-combat education, and Pete gives him the standard primer.

Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)

Pete reviews Joe's overloaded advancement path, lends him a restrictive body-and-mind limiter for lower worlds, and directs him toward concentrated ritual-combat training. Cosmo Hollows helps Joe begin a numerology profession, while Hilda Darling provides a foundational enchanting route. Heartpiercer and Socar remain on Vanaheim for their own tower instruction, so Joe returns alone to Midgard and accepts its mandatory characteristic cap. In Ardania, Joe learns that high-rank magic can permanently destabilize Midgard. King Henry and Queen Marie formally end his exile and grant him a guild-advancement mandate, a large land claim, and a future dukedom. More than two local years have passed during his absence. His mother Brenda is engaged to guard captain Bloss and asks Joe to be best man in six weeks. At the library, the new head librarian Lindon attacks Joe on behalf of unnamed sponsors, but guards stop the capture once the fight leaves Lindon's territory. Boris then reveals the cost of having vouched for Joe: he lost his post, funding, and scholarly standing. Joe accepts a two-year obligation to restore Boris with the Society of Scholars or lose his Arcanologist profession.

Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)

Joe escorts the physically weakened Boris to the Wanderers Guild settlement while practicing novice combat rituals under a dynamically escalating quest. He completes the journey without Boris taking harm. The rebuilt settlement has become a commercial attraction based on its earlier disasters and the Pathfinder's Hall. Joe rejects that passive direction, declares an emergency, and announces his authority to raise the settlement to city rank and the guild to a sect. The leaders schedule the upgrade for one month later. Joe installs Boris as curator of the Pathfinder's Hall, giving him living quarters and broad control over its class archive. Several returning ritualist mentees join Joe there and prepare for field training. At Tatum's hidden temple, Joe asks to combine a large backlog of divine rewards. The resulting Reductionist process consumes selected titles and skills, permanently narrowing and strengthening his ability set. Exquisite Shell evolves into a replenishable defense, and Joe retains Tatum's connection through Dark Chain Lightning. An outside force destroys Query during the process, so Joe loses remote access to Tatum and must visit shrines for future advice.

Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)

Joe takes his five-person ritualist coven into the wilderness for practical instruction. They learn to cast from circles without relying on blood targeting, gain confidence as a coordinated team, and reach at least student rank. A distant smoke column draws them to the Golden Greens, whose expanding fields are attacked by creatures that erase cultivation. Joe and the coven stabilize the defense and reunite with Joe's old friend Poppy, now the farming guild's security consultant. Joe offers a territorial partnership. He uses Ardania's token to claim more than forty thousand acres, immediately ending the active land-restoration assault and becoming Duke of Ardania. The Golden Greens retain their autonomy under a renewable lease, administer the duchy through a proxy title, and owe Joe a share of profits in cheese. Joe and the coven construct a keyed defensive ritual for the farm, then build barns, storage, housing, and a shrine with help from Kenny McGruff's work-assisting goats. The site advances to hamlet status. With immediate food and defenses established, the coven chooses to accompany Joe toward a dangerous forest in search of an artifact-ranked core.

Story so far - through chapter 34 (this book)

Robert's view of magic as a language helps Joe acquire Magical Syntax Lore and improve his ritual designs. The coven enters the Forest of Chlorophyll Chaos under an agreement to clear a sealed place of power. There they find another guild already fighting an immense insect swarm. Joe suppresses weaker insects with a broad human-safe ritual and uses the Ritual of the Bug Zapper to halt the flow, but the swarm's master-ranked Matriarch produces replacements, heals by consuming them, and grows stronger as it is injured. Joe persuades the guild to stop attacking and help power a targeted ritual. A disguised Jester deliberately breaks the restraint before escaping, proving hostile sabotage. Joe obtains the Matriarch's ichor, and the coven uses it to direct a sunlight ritual that grounds and burns the creature. Taka and Robert are apparently killed when the Matriarch consumes them during the battle. Joe secretly extracts an artifact-ranked core before the other guild claims the corpse. After the Matriarch dies, he builds a Tatum shrine that absorbs the crypt's corruptive mana and prevents another boss from forming. The coven departs with the hidden core and distrusts its temporary allies.

Story so far - through chapter 39 (this book)

Back at the guild settlement, Joe learns that jesters, battle scholars, disgraced noble houses, and mercenaries are coordinating an attack on the announced upgrades. His coven elects to build defenses and pursue independent advancement rather than remain under his constant protection. Joe selects the master-ranked Cataclysmic Tempest as the settlement's decisive weapon. He develops stabilizers and specialized equipment, while the coven produces hundreds of lower-rank combat rituals. Joe, his five trainees, batteries, and volunteers spend hours constructing the Tempest inside the Grand Ritual Hall. Completing its highest circle drains every available reserve until Joe draws in ambient mana. The prepared weapon is ready when he initiates upgrades for both the settlement and the Pathfinder's Hall. Ardania's mandate authorizes a combined city-and-sect route, but a saboteur curses it. The Crab Bucket Curse raises the trial to its maximum tier, requires victory over a weakened legendary monster, and prevents escape without a lasting advancement penalty. Respawns are redirected to the Hall for immediate return. Joe rallies the trapped population to fight, while the Hall's separate upgrade will still require two artifact cores after victory.

Story so far - through chapter 45 (this book)

The trial's expected monster is replaced by an external gate. Game Over, a transformed many-armed being Joe believed buried, arrives under the control of jesters, battle scholars, fallen nobles, and a beastmaster. Joe recruits Conrad Stevens and his mage battalion to power the hidden Cataclysmic Tempest. Hannah supplies preserved blood for targeting. The ritual is primed at severe cost, while defenders learn that anyone Game Over consumes cannot respawn and instead makes it stronger. Joe releases the storm, but the enemy Ritual of the Refusal of Three breaks its containment. A duplicated storm then destroys most of the noble army and nearly severs Game Over, yet the monster regenerates and continues. Defenders repeatedly sacrifice levels through respawns to hold it in place. Lindon and surviving assassins isolate Joe. Lindon creates a Life Tether that shares Joe's damage, and an assassin removes Joe's hands before offering him to the monster. Joe disables his limiter, regenerates enough to resist, and enters Game Over. There he releases legendary power and a Sage-ranked reduction ritual, then ruptures his mana pool. The internal explosion breaks Game Over's jaws and kills Joe and the tethered Lindon.

Story so far - through chapter 47 (this book)

Joe respawns at Tatum's temple and learns that Game Over was defeated after his death. The settlement becomes sect territory, and the Noble Wanderers Guild becomes a sect with one year to define its core mission. Game Over collapses into the Cauldron of Avarice, an indestructible object that cannot leave Midgard, absorbs ambient mana, and can eventually recreate the monster. Joe recovers artifact cores from the enemy force and uses two to complete the Pathfinder's Hall as a legendary building, stabilizing the area. The upgraded Hall improves rituals, contains peak Grandmaster output in a separate space, reduces material costs, and permits controlled class changes. Boris takes charge of ordinary management. Joe brings the cauldron to Tatum's temple to attempt recovery of those Game Over consumed. Tatum amplifies Joe's Mass Resurrection Aura and extracts one man, Ed, but the cauldron resists the working. Ed survives with almost no memory. The failed rescue shatters the resurrection skill into fragments lodged in Joe's soul and ruptures nearly all his mana pathways. Tatum stabilizes him but cannot repair deity-caused harm. Joe must remove the fragments and rebuild his mana system before he can safely use ordinary magic, while additional victims remain within the cauldron.

How does it end? (ending)

Joe respawns after his internal mana-pool detonation kills both him and Lindon and contributes to Game Over's defeat. The upgrade trial succeeds: the settlement becomes sect territory, the Noble Wanderers Guild becomes a sect, and it has one year to define its core mission. Joe supplies two artifact cores to finish the Pathfinder's Hall as a legendary building, then places Boris in charge of its ordinary operation. Game Over's surviving core is the indestructible Cauldron of Avarice, which cannot leave Midgard, gathers mana, may eventually recreate the monster, and still contains people it consumed. Tatum helps Joe attempt a rescue. They extract Ed alive, but the cauldron violently resists. The failure shatters Mass Resurrection Aura inside Joe's soul and ruptures nearly all of his mana pathways. Joe remains a ritualist and leader of the new sect, but he cannot safely cast or empower rituals normally until he removes the fragments and rebuilds his mana system. Further rescues may be possible, though the first attempt proves the danger.
