In short (whole book)

Felix Nevarre searches for a way to heal Pit, secures the northern territory of Kalheim, and leads an expedition into the dwarven mountains to rescue the Unbound fugitive Archie. The chase draws his party through Birchstone, Redshield Hold, the Undermount, and the Vault of Nine Kings while Imara and the Inquisition close behind. Felix frees thousands of oath-bound elemental sentries and restores four altered Eidolons. Archie recovers Song of Exile plates that may permit travel to Earth, and Pit consumes the Mote of Frenzy, beginning an unstable Storm Lord evolution. During the final battle, Felix discovers that Imara is his sister and has been made a Vessel of the Pathless. He weakens the possession but cannot free her. The group escapes the collapsing vault with Archie wounded and Harn alive but missing both legs. Imara survives and continues the pursuit, while Felix resolves to reach Master Tier, rescue his sister, and kill the Pathless.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Felix Nevarre became the Unbound Autark of Nagast and the Leviathan Depths, with Pit as his bonded Tenku companion and guardian. Their allies include dragoon heir Vessilia Dayne, ice-and-chain fighter Evie Aren, young Earth-born Unbound Beef, veteran commander Harn, fire mage Atar V'as, force mage Alistair, Chanter diplomat Zara Cyrene, ancient adviser Karys Taiv, and Cantus healer Isla. Felix's growing territories stand against the Hierocracy while the Ruin approaches. Pit carries permanent damage from a cursed masterwork weapon, leaving his wings destroyed and ordinary healing unable to restore him. Vessilia's path is tied to her voluntary dragon partner, while Beef fights through necromancy beside a shape-changing undead companion. The surviving Cantus Sodalis seeks to guide the scattered Unbound, but its secrecy and desire for control have limited Felix's trust. Felix also carries Hunger, a powerful force within his unusual core, and his rapid advancement has left important questions about his future progression unresolved.

Story so far - through chapter 13 (this book)

Archie, a small fugitive with stone-moving and mental abilities, escapes a Hierocracy pursuer in the Rimefang winter. At Elder Throne, Felix tests a suppression array against his allies and discovers that a dangerous clawed manifestation is forming within his core. Isla confirms that removing Pit's curse by ordinary means could destroy him. Felix also learns that a failing northern domain threatens Cold Rock and could offer both a diplomatic opening and essence for his research. Meanwhile, Ophelia enters Elder Throne's alchemy hall under the identity Lillian Nacht as part of a covert plan against Felix. Felix upgrades the Heart of Darkness and uncovers the Pool of the Halcyon Oath, an ancient Nemean route to deeper territorial power. A memory guardian cannot determine whether Felix has achieved core manifestation, but judges that he may survive the pool. Felix and Pit enter together. They withstand its attempt to unravel them and emerge with Labyrinthine Wing, a hazardous skill that lets Felix cross dark passages within his territories. After proving the route can carry a group, they reach the northern crisis, where rival frost-giant factions are fighting monsters released by the collapsing domain.

Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)

Felix intervenes at Cold Rock and offers to stabilize its failing Ironskin domain. Its coven permits him to attempt the traditional Path of Rule, though the trial is meant for a lone frost giant. Pit enters with him, and both are recognized as challengers. They fight through successive layers while the domain deteriorates around them. Pit proves that he can advance independently but suffers worsening pain from his curse-bound wounds. Felix's attempt to regrow Pit's wings fails violently, and Pit rejects a more dangerous repair that could consume too much of Felix's significance. The pair pass the formal challenge and continue toward the summit. When the domain bars their return after a fall, Felix fights directly through its storm and guardians. He then confronts the Frostfather, a supreme elemental fused with the mountain, and manifests his core as an immense clawed fist to force its surrender. The Frostfather restores the domain and identifies the Mote of Frenzy, last associated with dwarves, as a possible way to heal Pit without destroying his core. Felix returns with a lead on the cure and Cold Rock open to alliance, while his tenth foundational pillar and the risks of core manifestation remain unresolved.

Story so far - through chapter 45 (this book)

The Cantus Sodalis arrives in Nagast after escaping a Hierocracy blockade. Zara explains that Cantus members sacrificed themselves to disrupt the Hierophant's summoning and scatter the Unbound across the continent. Felix saves the delegation's damaged manaship from the Dread, then grants asylum only after every arrival swears not to betray Nagast. The Cantus elder reports widening Hierocracy attacks and confirms that Imara, a devastating Unbound controlled by the Hierophant, is hunting Archie in the Rimefang foothills. Imara continues the pursuit without needing rest, destroying marked trolls Archie uses to delay her. Felix prepares a northern rescue expedition while placing Karys Taiv and Zara in charge of relations with the newly arrived Chanters. Atar stays behind to contain and study a dangerous inner flame. Beef rejects Isla's attempt to keep him under Cantus authority, and Harn joins despite the personal risk. Felix accepts a dwarven Chanter and an elven ward specialist into the expedition under binding terms. Traveling through dark passages, he studies which tri-aspected skill could form his tenth pillar, while his party repels void creatures and approaches Cold Rock. The settlement is depleted and under attack just as Felix gains permission to pursue the territorial seat at King's Rock.

Story so far - through chapter 63 (this book)

Felix commits his expedition to Cold Rock's defense. Harn commands the main line while Vessilia, Evie, Pit, Beef, and Felix break the rival coven's assault and force its surrender. Hunger reveals itself as an active presence within Felix and demands increasingly powerful prey. With both friendly and defeated giants in his convoy, Felix enters the Starfield Step and races other tribes toward King's Rock through undead, elemental attacks, and ancient traps. His allies repeatedly keep the expedition moving when the route collapses or his feeding power slips beyond his control. At King's Rock, Felix and Pit defeat a timed army of unquiet dead, including a Master Tier forge knight. The giants still challenge his authority, but Inheritor's Will opens the Gate of Gloaming. Inside, Felix reaches the seat and seal and overcomes an old dwarven bloodline claim. He restores the lost territory as Kalheim, becomes its Colossus, and advances his Path of Empire to three territories. The claim yields the first fragment of the Crown of Elysium, a guardian artifact, and the hammer Bedlam, which he gives to Beef. Felix appoints the former rival frost-giant witch as chancellor, forbids further raiding, and directs the tribes to settle under Kalheim's authority.

Story so far - through chapter 76 (this book)

Felix leaves Kalheim under its new chancellor and travels toward the dwarven mountains. During the passage, Vessilia helps Beef rebuild his unstable core-space structure into a steadier form. Her bonded dragon offers a possible future solution to Beef's spiritual malleability: if Beef assists a rare hunt after the dragon advances, he may be bound to a hatchling. Felix continues preparing significance for Pit's repair but refuses to act before it is safe. His party emerges near a settlement destroyed by a powerful light or fire attacker and follows refugees toward a dwarven city. After saving a local vanguard from maddened sun trolls, Felix adopts the name Silas Vale and poses as a merchant. The dwarven captain identifies the destructive Titan as Imara and escorts the disguised group into Birchstone. Felix's goals are to find Archie, gain access to the sealed clan hold, and locate the Mote of Frenzy. An urban search leads him to Rat Lord Thrum, whose assassins fail to stop him. Felix then meets Archie and reveals that they are both Unbound from Earth. Archie accepts temporary shelter but distrusts Felix's cause and remains focused on finding a way home.

Story so far - through chapter 84 (this book)

Felix learns that Archie is Archibald Ross, a Delvin rather than a gnome. Archie possesses evidence that the Vault of Nine Kings contains a ritual that may send summoned Unbound back to Earth. Calis Fair, a Master Tier priest working covertly with the Chanters, admits that he delivered Imara to Archie and says she was meant to capture him. Imara then attacks Birchstone. Felix, Pit, Vessilia, and Beef help Captain Doric defend the city, but Imara's strength and regenerative armor overwhelm ordinary resistance. The Pathless speaks through her and suppresses her original emotions. Felix briefly disrupts that control, then hurls Imara over a mountain through their Unbound connection. Doric dies from wounds suffered protecting Felix, and Archie escapes his guards to pursue the vault. Calis explains that the Hierophant stripped Imara of emotion and desire. Felix decides that she may still be saved and divides his allies among preparations to intercept Archie. Their opportunity comes when the Hinterlord invites Silas Vale to a gala inside Redshield Hold. Harn forges keystones for a suppression array, other allies prepare an escape resource, and Felix enters the fortified hold while Imara remains alive and a Hierocracy force begins extracting her from the mountain crater.

Story so far - through chapter 95 (this book)

Inside Nightfall Palace, Felix and Vessilia maintain their cover during the Hinterlord's celebration and openly begin courting. Felix also learns that distant Sonara may hold information about another winged Unbound. The Hinterlord refuses to trade away the Mote of Frenzy, so Felix proceeds with the covert route. As Imara leads the Inquisition through Birchstone and toward Redshield Hold, Felix's party uses a ward fault to break into the Undermount. The same breach weakens dwarven defenses against the invasion. The party crosses the inverted mountain's hostile gravity, storm wards, pleasure palace, and shade-filled necropolis. Felix finds the hidden tomb and workshop of the Rock Shaper, taking a shaping journal and discovering an emergency route to the Low Roads. Above the necropolis, he carries the group through a void storm and encounters arcane sentries powered by elementals trapped under coerced oaths. He frees the first captives and traces their bonds to a central oathweaver. At that source, vault wardens have captured Archie. Felix's group kills the wardens under a suppression array, destroys the oathweaver, and releases thirty thousand sentries, earning Felix the title Bondbreaker. Archie still insists on reaching the summit vault, and Felix agrees to help while Imara and the Inquisition close in behind them.

Story so far - through chapter 103 (this book)

Archie opens the heavily warded Vault of Nine Kings after surviving its concealed entrance trap. Inside, the group searches for both the Mote of Frenzy and the array Archie believes can return him to Earth. A hidden workshop contains a Tier VIII earth-and-fire elemental being harvested alive. Pit finds the Mote, but removing it activates four grandmaster Eidolon exalts. Karys Taiv explains that the Eidolons are people in construct bodies, so Felix enters their damaged arrays and restores memories falsified by the Hinterlords. They accept his authority and lead Archie to twenty Song of Exile plates. Imara's force catches the group before it can leave. Archie opens the Mote's box, and Pit consumes its contents, beginning a violent evolution. Imara cuts off both of Harn's legs. When Felix removes her helmet, he recognizes his sister. He confirms that the Pathless has occupied her core and uses new defensive power to weaken its control, but cannot free her. Pit emerges with a legendary Storm Lord mantle and drives Imara away before collapsing. The captive elemental freely gives her remaining power to heal Felix. With the vault failing, Felix's companions and the restored Eidolons carry the wounded through the Rock Shaper's escape route. The group reaches the Low Roads and waits for smugglers. Imara survives and orders the hunt to continue. Felix resolves to return to Nagast, reach Master Tier, free his sister, and destroy the Pathless.

How does it end? (ending)

Felix and his companions escape the collapsing Vault of Nine Kings through the Rock Shaper's route into the Low Roads. Archie carries twenty Song of Exile plates that may open a path to Earth, but he is wounded and has not committed to Felix's cause. Pit survives after consuming the Mote of Frenzy, though his new Storm Lord evolution remains unstable and incomplete. Harn lives after losing both legs. Vessilia, Evie, Beef, the two Chanters, and allied Eidolons also escape, while smugglers are expected to move the group toward the Hoarfrost. Imara survives with the Inquisition and continues the hunt. Felix has confirmed that she is his sister and that the Pathless occupies her core; he weakened that control but could not remove it. Kalheim remains under its chancellor, Nagast still shelters the divided Cantus Sodalis, and a covert alchemical project within Elder Throne has resumed under an unknown benefactor. Felix intends to return to Nagast, reach Master Tier, free his sister, and destroy the Pathless.
