In short (whole book)
After defeating two dragons, Hal refuses to keep them enslaved by their oath and negotiates a reciprocal alliance that grants him dragonfire. Besal survives their separation, becomes physically independent, and takes up an anti-eldritch mission. Hal cures his founder-mark injury, turns defecting Kinslayers and an undercover founder into oath-bound allies, restores Durvin's missing soul fragment, and sheds the hollow essence restricting his powers. Brightsong gains homes, metalworking, magical crops, controlled monster farms, and Hal's legendary fused crafting. Mira reveals that Aldim is a declining world shard whose ascension could attract shard-consuming enemies. Val draws the returning tower archmage away from Hal and nearly dies beside the Poisonheart scout. Hal kills the archmage with his own captured spell, saves both defenders, recovers Val's consciousness, and claims the mobile archspire. Brightsong enters winter secure, while Besal continues his separate mission, Rinbast remains beyond direct reach, and Hal secretly prepares to return to the Abyss.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Hal founded Brightsong in the Shiverglades and leads its council with Noth, his partner. Ashera serves as his envoy, Vorax is his mimic familiar, and Lurklox protects him. Hal is a Beastborn and an Oathforger whose powers are linked to Besal, his inner counterpart.
Story so far - through chapter 10 (this book)
Hal wakes to learn that victory over a gold dragon and a tyrant white dragon has made both obey him under the White Gold Oath. He rejects the result and refuses exchanges that would free them by stripping away their power. While Brightsong searches for approaching Kinslayers, Hal chooses the Founder leadership path because it best supports his duty to protect the settlement. Besal is alive in the Fathomways but weak, separate from Hal, and bound by secrecy to an oracle-like helper who offers him a temporary vessel. Ashera secretly locates mithril for a crafting project, keeping the seam concealed because of the danger it could attract. Hal finally negotiates an equivalent replacement for the dragons' servitude. They give him dragonfire and agree to train him, while he recognizes the white dragon's territorial rights under Brightsong's authority and accepts reciprocal restrictions on using the flame. Both dragons approve the revised oath, ending their slave-like condition, and Hal survives the transfer of gold and white dragonfire.
Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)
Besal travels through the unstable Fathomways under the control of a powerful drow ritualist. When an eldritch creature shatters the stones sustaining him, he consumes it so completely that it cannot return. The oracle-like helper saves him and shows him disastrous possible futures for Hal, Brightsong, and Aldim, arguing that limited intervention is necessary. Meanwhile, Hal learns to channel gold dragonfire through hope and white dragonfire through patience and controlled use of ambient aether. Training turns his hostility with the white dragon toward mutual respect, and he commits to a deeper Draconic Vow with both dragons. Besal then chooses an independent existence. A concealed ritual uses an eldritch captive to sever his remaining bonds, temporarily clearing Hal's accumulated strain and corruption. Besal gains a physical body and the unique Star Scourge class. He remains committed to protecting Hal and Aldim, but decides to secure equipment and strength before returning as an equal rather than resuming his former place inside Hal.
Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)
A hidden Kinslayer expedition waits near Brightsong, blocked by the settlement's anti-magic barrier. Its undercover founder considers defecting from the unstable tower archmage and offers the two injured Kinslayers a way out. In Brightsong, Hal collapses when Besal's final bond is severed, then wakes with his strain symptoms gone. A newly arrived noncombatant food mage demonstrates magic that can create hardy, productive crops and asks to join the settlement. Hal still suffers dangerous founder-mark bleed, so the gold and white dragons combine their flames while he uses Draconic Purity. The ritual cures him and produces a call recognized across the Shiverglades as a prophecy of the Bright King. The Poisonheart scout abandons the archmage, the undercover founder flees with the Kinslayers, and political powers begin reacting. Hal assimilates a copper founder mark, starts a new quest, and uses temporarily free sigils to carve homes and defenses into the mountains. His sigil use no longer causes the disabling pain that had threatened his life.
Story so far - through chapter 39 (this book)
The tower archmage breaches Brightsong and attacks Hal with a destructive spell. Hal captures it with his sigils, defeats the mage's defenses, and forces him to escape, although revival magic prevents a permanent victory. Soon afterward, the undercover founder arrives with two defecting Kinslayers, Lamora, and the Poisonheart scout. The wounded female Kinslayer is an alternate version of Hal whose beast has died, and Hal stabilizes her through Dominate while retaining the tether as a safeguard. The undercover founder offers an alliance against Rinbast and instruction in using Magisite to fuel founder marks. After debate, Hal grants conditional sanctuary. The newcomers join the Bravers Guild and swear the Oath of the Bright King, which bars deliberate harm to allies and obliges them to protect incapacitated companions. Hal earns rewards for turning enemies into allies and begins learning Magisite-supported sigil use. The alliance leaves trust unresolved, but Brightsong gains a founder with her own territory, two former Kinslayers, Lamora, and a local scout rather than facing them as an attacking force.
Story so far - through chapter 50 (this book)
Hal plans for winter while learning to function without Besal. Val, the female Kinslayer, gives him her name and asks him to kill her if strain ever destroys her identity. She keeps his light Dominate connection voluntarily and begins exchanging Beastborn knowledge with him. Ashera brings secretly mined mithril for an innkeeper's quest, while Barden organizes the smithy effort. Hal uses dragonfire and copper sigils to produce high-purity iron and enough mithril for the project. He then enters a soul-fragment dungeon with Mira, Vorax, and the weakened Durvin. The dungeon forces Durvin through traumatic memories and reveals him as the dispossessed Steelheart heir to the Anvil. After he overcomes the memory constructs, Hal spares the sentient dungeon core and gives it all of his harmful hollow essence. The core returns Durvin's missing soul fragment. Hal leaves with his locked monster essences restored, a soul bond with Vorax that preserves the familiar's independence, and access to costly travel through the Fathomways. Durvin is whole again, but his future claim to the Anvil remains unsettled.
Story so far - through chapter 56 (this book)
With his essences available again, Hal collaborates with the food mage on mana batteries, conduits, and a farm grid. The system accelerates crops, but excess mana also produces plant monsters. Hal develops anchors that concentrate the spawns and establishes strict limits after an overgrown cycle overwhelms its guards. The resulting farms can provide food, combat training, and experience if Brightsong controls each harvest carefully. The settlement's smithy and sawmill operate, cottages rise, and Noth works with Elora on gateway towers and excavation slimes. Hal's renewed crafting advances into a fusion quest. He sacrifices levels from separate crafts to gain a legendary combined class with greater mana, speed, efficiency, and the ability to work bone and aether together. The quest suggests that such fusions can strengthen Aldim itself. At the same time, strain-driven aggression remains a concern for Hal without Besal's filtering, and the tower archmage is still expected to return.
Story so far - through chapter 63 (this book)
Besal advances separately, permanently consuming an eldritch guardian while his party seeks an undead lich as a potential ally. In Brightsong, Hal uses his fused craft to create advanced storage vessels, Elder Glass, armor, and a rebuilt soulbound weapon. He plans to train with Val after another dwarf soul-fragment expedition. The white dragon gives him rare white aether and requests a southern mountain spur for her nest, but both she and Mira react fearfully when Hal asks about ascending Aldim. During the expedition, Mira finally explains the danger. Aldim is a low-ranked, declining world shard within a larger war against forces that consume worlds. Hal's fusion quests may help it rise, but a shard becomes exposed during ascension, so strengthening Aldim without adequate protection could deliver it to those enemies. Hal now understands that repairing the world is necessary but cannot safely pursue ascension without a broader defense. Outside the dungeon, Val senses danger and remains behind with the Poisonheart scout.
Story so far - through chapter 68 (this book)
Val discovers that the tower archmage has been tracking her and breaks Hal's Dominate restraint so she can draw the threat away from him. Without her beast, every use of Beastborn strain shortens her prospects and risks erasing her identity. She attacks the archmage alone, driving herself into increasingly severe strain. The Poisonheart scout joins her and wounds the mage, but loses an arm and suffers a grave eye injury. Hal arrives before the archmage can execute Val. He releases the mage's own stored disintegration spell through gold sigils, killing him and claiming his mobile archspire and equipment. Hal stabilizes the scout through their bond, then uses Dominate to keep Val's heart and lungs working while he reaches her lost consciousness. Val wakes in Brightsong under Noth's care, and the scout survives with permanent disabilities. Hal restricts access to the captured archspire until it is safe. Snow arrives with Brightsong housed and provisioned. Besal remains on his independent anti-eldritch mission, Rinbast remains an unresolved threat, and Hal privately decides to return to the Abyss without telling Noth his true reason.
How does it end? (ending)
Brightsong reaches winter with shelter, food, stronger defenses, working smithing, and controlled magical farms. Hal has replaced the dragons' coercive oath with a reciprocal alliance, cured his founder-mark injury, removed his hollow essence, restored Durvin's soul fragment, and gained a legendary fused crafting class. Besal remains alive and independent in the Fathomways, pursuing allies against eldritch threats. Val and the Poisonheart scout survive their stand against the tower archmage, though the scout loses an arm and is likely blinded in one eye. Hal kills the archmage with the mage's stored disintegration spell, preserves Val's body, and reaches her lost consciousness. The captured mobile archspire is sealed pending inspection. Rinbast remains protected from direct conflict outside the Primacy Trials, Durvin's claim to the Anvil is unresolved, and another dwarf soul fragment still awaits recovery. Aldim may need to ascend to survive, but ascension could expose it to forces that consume world shards. Hal privately decides to return to the Abyss and has not told Noth his true purpose.
