Detained by the Twilight Secret Sect as a Raven Sect army approaches, Hadjar earns command and organizes an improvised defense. A failed mission through the guardian spirit's time anomaly sends him and Desert Mirage into the past, where Hadjar helps breach a fae castle but saves the Fae Queen's daughter before returning. The Raven commander steals the Soul Stone, kills many defenders, and leaves the sect ruined. Hadjar learns that the Black General created Therna but seeks the world's destruction, gains a route to the hidden Raven Sect, survives a northern trial, and awakens the true name of the North. He then assembles a coalition and invades the Raven Sect's artificial anomaly. Lathea kills the enemy's leading disciple, while Hadjar kills the Raven master after learning that his former master was a soul golem. The Black General is freed as the anomaly collapses and erases Hadjar's memory of their exchange. After burying the fallen, Hadjar and four companions form the Heaven Foxes and depart north.

Previously: Hadjar Darkhan, known as the Mad General and the Wind of the Northern Valleys, carried a fragment of the imprisoned Black General's soul and travelled with trusted companions including Lathea, Alba Udun, Abraham Shensie, Guy, and a young mage. His path had repeatedly drawn him through war, supernatural bargains, and displacements in time. The Lord of Nightmares had become both a dangerous ally and a source of unresolved debts. Hadjar also owed promised songs to the beast of swamps and bogs, which had granted him a reprieve of one year and one day before beginning its hunt. As the new journey begins, these obligations remain open while Hadjar and his companions become involved in a conflict between the Twilight Secret Sect and its Raven adversaries.

Hadjar's party is detained by the Twilight Secret Sect just as the Raven Sect demands negotiations. Abraham Shensie, a former sect master, argues that Hadjar may be able to locate the enemy's hidden base. The Raven emissary studies Hadjar's altered blood, offers knowledge of his origins in exchange for allegiance, and is refused. Evidence points to a dangerous artifact in the sect vault as the true object of the siege. Abraham also reveals that he seeks immortality and has a troubled history with the sect's finest duelist. With the sect's cultivators powerful but untrained for war, Abraham presses Hadjar to take command. The sect head makes authority conditional on a restricted duel. Hadjar defeats the duelist through physical skill without injuring her, proving the discipline of his sword style. At the end of the contest, the sect head gives him the general's medallion and orders the sect to obey him.

Hadjar finds the Twilight Secret Sect poorly supplied and reorganizes its defenses around practical weapons, sentries, archers, and small frontline units. Lathea commits to stand with him, while Gustaf receives command of the bows and artillery. The Raven Sect arrives with mercenaries, siege towers, mortars, Therna cannons, and other specialized engines. The Twilight Mountains' guardian spirit freezes the battlefield and warns that the Raven commander carries a casket able to kill the mountains. It then isolates the castle inside a time anomaly. The reprieve may last days, but an anti-spirit golem could shorten it to hours, and the Raven cannons can destroy the castle in two salvos. Because the contested artifact cannot be removed and would threaten the mortal world if captured, Hadjar abandons the idea of a static defense. He proposes crossing the active time boundary and destroying the enemy artillery before the anomaly fails.

The Lesket mage explains that crossing the guardian spirit's boundary requires a constructed bridge through unstable layers of time and space. Hadjar and Desert Mirage accept the danger. Lathea becomes the stationary anchor, while the two fighters must cross with almost no equipment and destroy the Raven artillery within minutes. If both leave the bridge, or if the guardian falls, the spell could kill everyone involved and destroy the mountains. The mage completes the path, but the journey immediately becomes unstable. A fragment of broken reality tears away part of the bridge, and Desert Mirage saves Hadjar from the rupture. The resulting wave throws both travelers into the anomaly before they reach the Raven camp. Their carefully timed sabotage mission ends with them lost beyond the collapsed route, while Lathea and the threatened sect remain behind.

Hadjar and Desert Mirage awaken in weaker mortal bodies and discover that the anomaly has sent them into the distant past. They enter a human army preparing to besiege the castle of the Rainbow Elves, a campaign tied to the legendary Potter. Posing as mercenaries, they seek a way into the castle and hope its guardian can return them home. Their cover nearly fails at an officers' council, but the Potter claims them as assistants. He recognizes them as future travelers and believes their arrival was foretold. Hadjar's name also leads him to connect the Black General with the historical title Black God. The Potter cannot be assured of his own future success, but he offers the displaced pair a bargain: help him seize the dangerous artifact guarded by the Rainbow Elves, and he will send them back to their own time. With no other route home, Hadjar accepts.

The Fae Queen secretly approaches Hadjar and asks him to save her daughter if the Potter's siege cannot be stopped. When the human assault begins, Hadjar takes command of nearby soldiers, defeats a winged counterattack, secures a crossing over the moat, and shields a siege tower from massed arrows. He completes a new sword stance and opens the castle gates, allowing the human army inside. The breach draws him toward the Fae Queen's daughter as her parents face the human king. Hadjar realizes that the queen's need to save her child was the force that pulled him and Desert Mirage through time. He breaks the Potter's restraint and carries the girl out through a tower window. The Fae Queen's spell returns him to the present, and the dying guardian spirit identifies the rescued child as a future warrior queen. Hadjar arrives beside the spirit with the Raven commander waiting for him.

The guardian spirit gives Hadjar enough frozen time to destroy most of the Raven cannons and escape the temporal rift with Desert Mirage. One cannon survives. Abraham then admits that he altered the sect chronicles and reveals a connection to the ancient king from the Potter's war. The remaining cannon breaches the castle, and Raven fighters pour inside while Hadjar's blade absorbs soul fragments from those he kills. In the hidden chamber, the defenders confront the Raven commander over the Soul Stone. The ancient king's identity manifests through Abraham and explains that the artifact spiritually joins related travelers, and Hadjar concludes that the Raven Sect intends to use it to restore the Black General. The commander sacrifices followers and his own arm to summon a fragment of the Verge, overwhelms the defenders, and takes the stone. He spares Hadjar on his master's orders and escapes. The imprisoned Black General refuses to explain why he warned Hadjar never to touch the Soul Stone.

The Twilight castle is left ruined. Abraham ends the mortally wounded sect head's suffering, Gustaf is dead, Lathea is badly injured, and Alba Udun has lost his sight and part of his energy body. Gustaf's death reveals that he was Itia's son. Hadjar turns the survivors toward a new war before the Raven Sect can use the Soul Stone at the next full moon. To locate the hidden enemy, he summons the Lord of Nightmares. The demon produces an object made by an ancient wizard, and Hadjar's blood unlocks memories of the Black General. They show that the general created Therna for mortals but ultimately planned to destroy the Nameless World.

The new Twilight Secret Sect head begins adapting from bereaved duelist to leader of the surviving disciples. The Lesket mage studies the portal scroll and determines that it needs Therna accumulators; without them, roughly two hundred people would be consumed to power it. Lathea leaves to support coalition-building in her homeland, while Hadjar, Alba Udun, and a sect representative search the northern mountains for a hidden community descended from an earlier anti-Raven campaign. The community admits Hadjar through an energyless barrier after judging him distinct from the Black General's followers. Local magic allows him to survive where normal cultivation and artifacts fail. Inside, a concentrated Therna star strengthens his body. He then meets the hidden community's leader, an apparently mortal and terminally ill elder whose undetectable power and unexplained knowledge make Hadjar immediately wary. The accumulators remain conditional on what the leader demands.

The hidden leader refuses political support but offers Hadjar the needed Therna accumulators if he survives a night naked in an ice-lake anomaly. The lake strips away power, memory, and identity, forcing Hadjar to relive a childhood assassination attempt by his uncle. Within that memory, the ice-wolf chief helps him recover the true name of the North. Hadjar learns that the Lord of Nightmares intervened during the attack, altered his uncle's intentions, and suppressed the northern power before it could bind the boy to the Winter Queen. Hadjar emerges able to wield the North's essence, though it leaves lasting pain in his soul. He confronts the demon, ends their friendship, preserves only one promised request, and declares his intention to kill him someday. After the ordeal, the hidden leader honors the bargain and gives Hadjar the accumulators, while still refusing to bring him before the secluded factions' council.

Hadjar rejoins the Twilight Secret Sect survivors and Abraham's squad on the way to the regional gathering hosted in Lathea's homeland. Nearly eighteen thousand fighters assemble for the anti-Raven campaign. Abraham argues that the delegates have already chosen war, presents the portal plan, and nominates Hadjar to command. Hadjar proves his fitness in a public duel, drawing first blood from Abraham while demonstrating better control of the North's power despite the damage it still causes him. Lathea directs the organization of the mixed force, Alba Udun converts cannons to use Therna, and the Lesket mage studies the portal apparatus. Abraham also links the portal's creator to experiments with anomalies and routes beyond sealed reality. By the end of the preparations, the mage has learned how to open the portal. The coalition now has an army, artillery, an energy source, and a working path to the Raven Sect.

The Lesket mage determines that the Raven castle occupies a stable artificial anomaly beyond ordinary world-roads. The portal's landing point cannot be predicted, but Hadjar commits the expedition and the entire force is transported to the rocky island holding the castle. The anomaly contains no World River energy, forcing the invaders to rely on personal reserves and Therna. A narrow bridge appears to make a direct assault impossible, and the Raven master's leading disciple refuses surrender. Hadjar answers with a layered siege plan. Artillery and archers will occupy the walls while an officer leads five hundred fighters through northern sewers. Alba Udun will place linked charges to damage the lower structures and alter the water pressure, flooding the castle's lower levels. Hadjar then intends to cross in a siege tower, establish a courtyard battle, and open routes for attacks from three directions. The assault must begin before the defenders close the infiltration route.

The Raven bridge expands and releases thousands of swordsmen, exposing the apparent chokepoint as a trap. Hadjar's shield lines suffer heavy losses but hold while artillery forces the defenders to spend their limited power. He drives the army into a prolonged melee and expends much of his remaining strength to kill hundreds, buying time for the infiltration group. The Raven master's leading disciple then challenges the depleted Hadjar. Their related wind-and-sword techniques reveal their shared Black General lineage. Hadjar turns back a major attack, but the disciple survives by sacrificing an artifact and gains the advantage. Lathea intervenes and kills him in retribution for Gustaf and the other dead. Hadjar's sword absorbs the disciple's soul and fragment, triggering a vast Therna eruption that destabilizes the anomaly. Swept underwater and separated from the battle, Hadjar awakens helpless before the man he recognizes as his master.

The Raven master reveals that Hadjar's former master was a soul golem engineered to locate bearers of Black General fragments. He prepares to remove Hadjar's heart, replace it with the cursed stone, and use the gathered fragments to restore the Black General. An ancient king and servant interrupt but are defeated. The remaining attachment within Hadjar's former master then manifests through the Raven master's body and restrains him long enough for Hadjar to reclaim his power and kill him. As the anomaly collapses, the Black General appears free of his chains, warns that Hadjar has absorbed too many fragments, and causes him to forget their exchange. Back in the Strangelands, the survivors hold a mass funeral. The maimed Itia remains as the Twilight Secret Sect's archivist. Hadjar, Lathea, Alba Udun, the Lesket mage, and an unnamed officer form the Heaven Foxes and depart toward the northern lands. The Raven campaign is over, but the freed Black General, the missing Soul Stone, the demon's debt, and the cost of the North remain unresolved.

The coalition's invasion of the Raven Sect's artificial anomaly ends with the deaths of the Raven master's leading disciple and the Raven master. Lathea kills the disciple, and the lingering attachment within Hadjar's former master briefly restrains the Raven master so Hadjar can strike the killing blow. The collapsing anomaly releases the Black General, who leaves Hadjar unable to remember their final exchange and burdened with more soul fragments. The survivors return to the Strangelands and bury their dead. Itia, permanently maimed, remains as archivist of the Twilight Secret Sect. Hadjar leaves for the northern lands with Lathea, Alba Udun, the Lesket mage, and an unnamed officer under the squad name Heaven Foxes. The immediate Raven Sect war is finished, but the Black General is free, the Soul Stone remains beyond Hadjar's reach, the Lord of Nightmares is still owed one request, and the power of the North continues to exact a cost from Hadjar's soul.
