Hadjar enters the spirit world with the Lord of Nightmares to save the wounded Lesket mage, confronting the Summer Queen's influence over his past and accepting a future debt to the Black General. He bargains with a primeval god, crosses hostile spirit lands, defeats his white-dragon ancestor, and returns with the thorn that heals the mage. Lathea escapes the winter queen's wolves, and the group survives the wolf alpha when the northerner forces the pack away. The Lesket patriarch's plot against his youngest son collapses; Lathea kills him, and his elder son takes command. Farther south, Hadjar reunites with Abraham Shensie's squad, defeats but saves Desert Mirage, and passes the Twilight Secret Sect's mountain trial. Abraham asks the sect to lead a war against the Raven Sect and uses Hadjar's connection to the Black General as leverage. Before the council decides, a scout reports that a large Raven Sect force is one day away.

Previously: Hadjar traveled with Lathea and a young Lesket mage while pursuing his conflict with the Raven Sect. His path had also tied him to Therna, the winter queen, the Lord of Nightmares, and a dangerous presence within his soul.

Hadjar wakes badly injured in a northerner's shelter. The Lesket mage has kept him alive but is dying from a soul wound, while Lathea is imprisoned by the winter queen's wolves. The northerner directs Hadjar to find a cure in the Summer Queen's palace, and the Lord of Nightmares accompanies him into the spirit world to collect an old debt. After evading winter guards, they enter a forest that exposes wounds of the soul. Hadjar relives his regrets over Ina and the cruelty that helped shape him as the Mad General. The Summer Queen then claims that Ina and another woman from his past were free-willed fragments of herself. Enraged and distrustful, Hadjar defeats three Summer Court knights. The Lord of Nightmares denies knowing the truth about those fragments, and Hadjar continues toward the palace with Ina's pendant, unwilling to treat fate or either queen as the master of his choices.

The Mirage and Dream Forest demands blood for every step and attacks Hadjar with false visions. An Angler of Truth redirects him toward the ancestral rock where the white dragon waits. Flower spirits agree to guide him only if he removes the primeval beast of swamps and bogs from their land. Unable to defeat the god, Hadjar exploits its hunger for remembrance. He promises future songs, gains a reprieve of one year and one day, and persuades it to move elsewhere, though it vows to hunt him when the term ends. The flower spirits then trap the Lord of Nightmares in Hadjar's shadow under their hospitality rules. During their celebration, a flower warrior challenges Hadjar to a ceremonial sword dance because of the Black General's connection to her family. The imprisoned being in Hadjar's soul offers power in exchange for an undefined future favor. Hadjar accepts, entering both the duel and a new obligation.

A memory shows the Black General killing the flower warrior's mother during an ancient campaign against the spirit realm. Borrowed Therna strengthens Hadjar for the duel, but the flower warrior remains superior and intends to destroy the fragment within him. Sunrise ends the contest under the village's hospitality law, allowing Hadjar to escape with the promised route map. He then witnesses the Lord of Nightmares and the Black General acknowledge old oaths and former enmity. The demon confirms that he brought Hadjar into this world, but says an oath prevents further explanation. Elsewhere, the Summer Queen asks her sister to block Hadjar's route and seeks support for a larger supernatural war, but the winter queen refuses. At the Spirit Bowls, Hadjar evades their red-armored guardian, uses the Black General's Verge warrior meditation to absorb natural energy, and advances his cultivation. His sharper perception lets him identify weaknesses within techniques. After a restrained duel at the highest bowl, he flies beyond the guardian and reaches the ancestral rock.

At the ancestral rock, the white dragon reveals himself as Hadjar's ancestor and the last spirit of their bloodline. His memories show that the god of wisdom made him a disciple, that he later fought beside the being now confined within Hadjar, and that both defended the worlds against creatures beyond the Verge. The ancestor identifies that being as his second master and begins an inheritance duel. Hadjar is initially overwhelmed. The Black General teaches him to use Therna directly through his body and outlines a path from sword techniques toward a personal law. Applying that lesson, Hadjar creates Headwind, defeats the white dragon, and receives the dying spirit's feathered wings. The inheritance becomes a body pattern capable of producing real wings once. With the ancestral rock collapsing, Hadjar races toward the Summer Court capital, carrying the power needed for the next stage of his rescue.

Hadjar crosses the ancestor lake and reaches the Summer Court capital during its solstice festival. The Summer Queen attempts to contain him through court hospitality, but the Lord of Nightmares confronts her and sends Hadjar into the treasury. Hadjar takes a thorn and returns to the mountains while the demon remains behind to fight. The northerner applies the thorn to the Lesket mage, ending his fever and leaving him with an ancient blessing. Lathea then reaches the shelter alive but severely injured after escaping the wolves, and Hadjar stabilizes her. The northerner explains that the true North lies beyond ordinary navigation and gives Hadjar a blank map governed by ancient magic. While gathering firewood, Hadjar meets a forest master and learns more about northern customs. A wolfman connected to the pursuing pack approaches, reveals knowledge of Hadjar's enchanted protection and the Black General, and invokes a binding northern convention before demanding answers about Lathea.

The wolfman admits that the winter queen ordered Lathea's abduction. Hadjar's evasive answer sends him racing toward the northerner's hut, where the wolf pack gathers. The wolf alpha demands Lathea and reopens a century-old grievance over the death of the northerner's brother. With Lathea freezing inside, the Lesket mage secretly strengthens Hadjar's connection to northern wind so he can challenge the alpha. Hadjar draws first blood but cannot overcome the alpha's darkness domain. The northerner intervenes after gaining the Rule of the Axe, kills an attacking wolf, and forces the pack to withdraw without settling their feud. A messenger then summons him back to the North. Before leaving, he gives Hadjar a small item. Hadjar realizes that the Lesket patriarch sent the expedition to locate a northern native and force him home. The mage admits his father's plan, rejects it despite likely exile, and joins Hadjar's party with Lathea's support.

Lathea explains that the wolves suppressed her cultivation until an unexplained golden flash restored it, enabling her escape. Hadjar, Lathea, and the recovering mage descend from the mountains and encounter more than twelve hundred Lesket warriors. Hadjar concludes that the patriarch designed the mission to kill his youngest son and manipulate the elder heir. The elder son turns the soldiers against their father and exposes the patriarch's murder of a newborn daughter because of a prophecy. The mage unleashes ancient magic but stops before killing himself. When the patriarch later attacks Lathea, the mage takes the blow and Lathea kills the old clan head. The elder son succeeds him and commits the Lesket force to accompany negotiations with the Twilight Secret Sect. Lathea cares for the injured mage but tells Hadjar that she considers him a loyal friend rather than a romantic partner. The three companions then travel west to meet Abraham Shensie's group and continue preparations against the Raven Sect.

Hadjar, Lathea, and the Lesket mage reach a border market hosting the Fall Twilight Festival. They reunite with Abraham Shensie, Alba Udun, Guy, Gustaf, and Itia. Abraham's operation is so risky that Hadjar withholds the Lord of Nightmares' role when recounting his recent journey. A festival legend describes the Lord of Nightmares freeing an imprisoned king after the Black General's soul was scattered, but the tale's historical accuracy remains uncertain. The festival tournament offers Therna knowledge and entry to the Twilight Secret Sect. Hundreds compete through a physical-strength test and lethal battles against magical incarnations until only twenty remain. Abraham's actual objective requires another route into the sect. After the final contest, he publicly questions why the sect risked outsiders while withholding its own disciples, then names Hadjar and provokes a direct challenge from Desert Mirage, Hadjar's former acquaintance from the Sea of Sand.

Desert Mirage accepts the public duel while privately remembering an earlier promise to fight Hadjar. Although the sect disciple has higher cultivation, Hadjar breaks his wolf-shaped saber attack by disturbing the Therna that sustains it. Desert Mirage activates a flame amulet that begins destroying him from within. Hadjar defeats him, then forces the watching sect master to provide treatment. The master takes Desert Mirage's place, but an apparent summons from the mountain ends her attack. She identifies herself as the Sea Whisper and invites Hadjar's group into the sect as guests. The mountain rejects Hadjar's wind path and drops the party into its foothills. Alba Udun senses that the mountain itself is ancient and conscious. Hadjar enters the Twilight Path alone and sees a vision of the Lord of Nightmares tending an unidentified prisoner in a chained crystal sarcophagus. He emerges three weeks later, after his companions, and learns that the mountain spirit decides who may pass. Desert Mirage has survived.

Desert Mirage escorts Hadjar to the Twilight Secret Sect's council and advises him to leave. Hadjar instead offers him a place with the group if he abandons the sect. Abraham Shensie asks the sect to lead a campaign against the Raven Sect, offering the key and knowledge of Therna as payment. The five chiefs disagree, while the sect head argues that Abraham's roughly fifteen hundred fighters cannot strike an enemy whose headquarters remains hidden. Without Hadjar's consent, Abraham presents him as the Black General's descendant and disciple and calls that connection the campaign's missing advantage. The sect head proposes testing the claim before committing. The debate is overtaken by a wounded scout, who reports that at least two thousand black-cloaked Raven Sect swordsmen killed his companions and are only one day south. The council has not decided, but the enemy's approach makes the alliance and coming battle immediate.

Hadjar enters the Twilight Secret Sect after the mountain spirit keeps him on the Twilight Path for three weeks. Desert Mirage survives their duel and warns Hadjar to leave, but Hadjar instead offers him a place with the group. At the council, Abraham Shensie offers the key and knowledge of Therna as payment for sect leadership in a campaign against the Raven Sect. He also publicly identifies Hadjar as the Black General's supposed descendant and disciple, without Hadjar's consent. The five sect chiefs remain divided, and the claim is still untested when a wounded scout arrives. At least two thousand Raven Sect swordsmen are only one day south. Hadjar, Lathea, the recovering Lesket mage, Abraham's squad, Desert Mirage, and the new Lesket leadership are alive. The sect's alliance decision and the approaching battle remain immediate, while Hadjar still owes the Black General an unspecified favor and faces the beast of swamps and bogs after its one-year-and-one-day reprieve.
