Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Chance (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

A homeless recent graduate on Earth whose parents died in a truck collision. Unable to afford college, Chance tries to live by the optimism and contentment they taught him, showing generosity even when he has almost nothing before a truck strikes and kills him.

The trucker (Minor)

Appears from the start

A truck driver who tests Chance's generosity, displays surprising strength, and asks whether he would accept a new life with genuine agency. After abruptly disappearing from their conversation, he deliberately drives the semi-truck that strikes and kills Chance.

The floating man (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 3

An extraordinarily powerful floating man who heals Chance after his ordeal in the alleys and opens a path to safety. He claims a connection through their essence, treats Chance as an investment, and demands absolute secrecy under threat of death.

The grey-haired trainer (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 3

A grey-haired trainer whom Chance first sees defeating an armored trainee during a spar. He is present when Chance finally emerges from the lethal alleys onto a monster-hunter training field and collapses after asking for food and water.

Pete (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 5

The resident instructor and supervisor for Chance's new team. Pete provides a home, explains the risks and rewards of monster hunting, and supports the recruits' development while keeping some of the head trainer's history private.

Bella (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 5

A capable and independently productive hunter who had an agreement to work alone until she was assigned to Chance's team. Bella blames the unexpected change on his arrival, rejects him outright, and refuses to accept the imposed team arrangement.

The metal cultivator teammate (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 7

Chance's enthusiastic third teammate, a Kusarigama user from a nearby village whose father came from Earth. Curious about Chance's home world, he quickly proposes an exchange of knowledge and becomes Chance's cooperative early ally.

Battlemaster Jag (Minor)

First appears in chapter 11

A weapon specialist who reads affinity through essence. When conventional armory choices fail Chance, the battlemaster follows the pull of Chance's power to a dangerous segmented blade and begins identifying the weapon suited to him.

Vex (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 14

A powerful figure who reaches Bella through an isolating ward and holds her to a binding contract. Vex calls her an investment, immobilizes Chance when he witnesses their meeting, and is prepared to kill him before another cultivator intervenes.

The Old City alleys (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 13

The shifting old alleys that secretly draw Chance into real hunts and reward him with monster corpses. Their routes and gifts respond to him in purposeful ways, but the nature of the force directing these encounters remains unexplained.

The hometown rival (Minor)

First appears in chapter 16

A recruit from the metal cultivator teammate's hometown who arrives with another new team. Their existing rivalry is immediately apparent, and his presence establishes a personal contest that the teammate is unwilling to explain to Chance.

Joe (Minor)

First appears in chapter 30

A powerful hunter who takes charge when the team's imp investigation exceeds foundling level. Joe uses a ring to form a fast-flying metal disc and brings the recruits along to search for the missing mother rather than letting them continue alone.

The Old City (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 41

The newly conscious part of Gleam that has been communicating through altered passages and stone images. The Old City says it gathers stray essence to cultivate, opposes the cultivator who enslaves people through karma, and asks Chance for a provisional alliance.

The senior karma cultivator's essence clone (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 41

The hidden nature of the floating man Chance has known since the alleys. He is an essence clone of a vastly stronger karma cultivator, and his path uses karmic enslavement to create transformed monsters. The Old City warns that he will eventually report Chance to his true self.

Lucy (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 45

An immortal karma cultivator drawn to Chance by the appearance of a new practitioner. Lucy warns that karmic power carries mounting costs and offers timeless mindscape instruction in exchange for a favor that Chance must repay in the future.

The metal cultivator teammate's brother (Minor)

First appears in chapter 54

The armored tournament opponent revealed to be the metal cultivator teammate's brother. He makes their match a public dispute over their father, claiming the family rejected his brother while favoring him, but loses after his brother endures grave injuries and traps him with metal threads.

The polearm dancer (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 55

A tournament fighter whose polearm movements are inseparable from his essence of endless dance. His integrated style exposes what Chance's own method lacks, and he initially uses their match as an opportunity to guide Chance rather than simply defeat him.

The polearm dancer's mentor (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 56

The polearm dancer's plainly dressed but immensely powerful teacher. He interrupts the tournament after his student uses a prohibited technique, exerting enough pressure to nearly crush both Chance and the dancer before forcing his student to withdraw.

The senior karma cultivator (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 62

The true cultivator behind the essence clone who has shaped Chance's progress. After taking direct control of the fragment, he reveals his interest in controlling the awakened Old City and offers Chance a marked apprenticeship tied to an agreement over its fate.
