Chance, a homeless graduate on Earth, returns a trucker's wallet and pays for the stranger's drinks. The trucker questions whether Chance would accept a life with genuine choice, then deliberately kills him with a semi-truck. Chance awakens in unfamiliar stone alleys beneath a purple sky. A note from the trucker hints that Chance's dead parents may also be in this world. After eating the food left with the note, Chance purges black bile and manifests golden mist that bends events in his favor. He survives for weeks among monstrous hounds before a floating man heals him, claims an unspecified connection through their essence, and orders him to keep their meeting secret. Chance escapes to a training field in Gleam, where the head trainer registers him as a monster hunter and assigns him to a team. Pete becomes his resident instructor, while Bella resents being forced out of solo work. When the head trainer plans to report Chance's abnormal arrival, the floating man threatens his wife and compels him to support Chance instead.

Team Whiteheart gains its third recruit, a friendly metal cultivator whose father came from Earth and who fights with a Kusarigama. He and Chance agree to pursue rank and money together, partly to fund a search for Chance's parents, while Bella continues to avoid them. Chance learns the basics of essence, aura, cultivation, and the hunter ranking system. Bella and the metal cultivator teammate advance to Squire before Chance. The Old City forces Chance into a severe trial that ends in a vision of a golden eight-armed being, and he completes his own advancement soon afterward. A specialist could search Centurion for Chance's parents, but the estimated cost is about seventeen thousand gold with no guarantee of success. Chance, Bella, and their teammate continue hunting and training for the quarterly Squire tournament, while Chance uses cultivation pills without the impurity limits that constrain the others. Lucy, an immortal karma cultivator, discovers Chance and offers timeless mindscape instruction for a future favor. Her training gives him a foundation of balance, redirection, and fluid movement, but he must adapt it into a style that embodies his own essence. Lucy then traces Chance's connection to the clone. Chance brings Bella through the Old City's concealed routes toward Gleam's edge. He finally tells her that he died on Earth, survived for weeks in the alleys, and has been dealing with the senior karma cultivator and the awakened city. Chance and Bella briefly leave the Old City to buy supplies, then use its passages to reach a main gate. They choose free transit tokens that carry no recorded named destination and arrive in fields beside a forest outside the city. They enter the forest to evade pursuit. Chance and Bella are safely beyond Gleam for the moment, but remain fugitives in uncertain territory. Their teammate is alive but separated, Pete has stayed behind, and Vex's claim on Bella, the order's pursuit, the senior cultivator's demands, and the Old City's imprisonment all remain unresolved.

After the order sends an assassin for Bella, Chance saves her and Pete covers their escape.
