In short (whole book)

Rags rejects Tremborag's mountain, frees its captives, and leads a newly disciplined Goblin tribe south toward the greater war. Ceria and Pisces' Wistrom past ends with both recognized as mages, but Pisces is exiled and their friendship is broken. Erin returns to a thriving inn, becomes a Magical Innkeeper, and uses its portal and alliances to relieve Esthelm. Ryoka meets Laken, another person from Earth, helps equip the Horns, and carries emergency supplies to River Farm. Christmas exposes Erin's longing for home while hidden Antinium history surfaces. On the winter solstice, strange visitors offer Erin treasures for her soul and hostile beings offer Ryoka the restoration of her lost fingers. Both refuse. Erin is left with an unnatural coin, while Ryoka destroys the offered fingers and escapes with Ivolethe, still injured.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Erin, an innkeeper from Earth, built the Wandering Inn outside Liscor into a refuge shared by adventurers, Antinium, Drakes, Gnolls, and other outsiders. Ryoka, another arrival from Earth, remained classless and pursued dangerous running work with the Frost Faerie Ivolethe. The Horns of Hammerad re-formed around Ceria, Pisces, Yvlon, and Ksmvr after surviving the ruins of Albez. Their recovered artifacts and Erin's portal door opened new possibilities, but also created risks. Rags emerged as a young Goblin leader while a Goblin Lord's armies devastated settlements including Esthelm. Laken established authority at River Farm with Durene beside him. Lyonette remained at Erin's inn and began taking responsibility for the young white-furred survivor of the Stone Spears tribe. The dungeon beneath Liscor, conflict among the Antinium, and the presence of multiple people from Earth all remained unresolved.

Story so far - through chapter 4 (this book)

Rags leads a Goblin coalition north after learning that the army she defeated was only one part of the Goblin Lord's much larger force. At Tremborag's mountain, Garen Redfang negotiates a limited alliance that leaves Rags politically diminished. She discovers that the prosperous settlement rests on hierarchy, coercion, and imprisoned human women. The Goldstone Chieftain proves that his visits to the captives were meant to protect them, and Rags names him Pyrite. Rejecting Tremborag's rule, she leads a revolt, empties his armory, and escapes with supplies, followers, and hundreds of freed captives. After delivering the women to a human city, she establishes a forest camp and begins training mobile pike formations against cavalry. At the Wandering Inn, the traumatized young Gnoll falls into the dungeon while fleeing accusations tied to her white fur. Lyonette organizes a rescue with Zel, Ksmvr, Xrn, and others. The child survives and accepts the inn as home.

Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)

Erin finances Octavia's experiments and uses the portal door to support the traveling Horns, while refusing demands to turn the limited, mana-hungry connection into a public delivery service. A white-bearded stranger named Teriarch intercepts the Horns, overwhelms them with basic spells, and questions Erin about Ryoka's copied phone. He teaches Ceria and Pisces how to turn simple magic and the surrounding snow into a storm, then departs. His human appearance is a remote guise controlled by a dragon. Rags reorganizes her enlarged tribe and assigns the Redfang Warriors as a mobile vanguard. Costly encounters with monsters and undead expose the limits of her command, but Greybeard's memories show that Goblins once maintained peace with other peoples. Rags adopts regular training, rescues another tribe, and captures caravan supplies without killing the travelers. She turns south with a doctrine based on discipline and lower casualties. Ceria's history then begins: as a prospective student, she meets Pisces on the voyage to Wistrom, and the pair enter the dangerous academy together.

Story so far - through chapter 13 (this book)

At Wistrom, Ceria and Pisces survive harassment, factional maneuvering, and an entrance examination by sharing knowledge and protecting each other. They secretly acquire a warded spellbook with Cognita's rule-bound assistance. Pisces masters Flashstep, while Ceria solves an ice mage's barrier test through practical ingenuity. Their friendship breaks after a pirate ambush, when Pisces raises the dead to protect survivors and is publicly exposed as a necromancer. Wistrom strips his support, but the ice mage accepts Ceria as her apprentice. Years later, Ceria's master and four senior mages challenge Cognita and the other guardian golems for access to Wistrom's sealed upper levels. All five challengers die. Pisces reanimates their bodies to enter the catacombs and steals bones from an archmage's tomb, releasing shades that kill nearly sixty people. Cognita prevents his execution, and he receives permanent exile. Ceria condemns the academy's inaction. Cognita publicly recognizes both Ceria and Pisces as full mages, but they leave Wistrom separately, their friendship shattered.

Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)

The Horns travel back toward Liscor with Erin, passing through damaged Esthelm and learning that Yvlon's gold-rank brother helped defend the city before leaving to search for her. Erin brings blankets and food, but Esthelm remains short of supplies and vulnerable. At the Wandering Inn, Lyonette has kept the business running, cared for the young Gnoll, and filled the rooms with two gold-rank teams. Erin initially overlooks that achievement, then accepts Zel's rebuke and apologizes. She reveals the portal door connecting the inn to Octavia's shop, although its mana reserve is small enough to strand travelers and its closing edge is dangerous. After the inn fills with guests from many species, Erin reaches level thirty and becomes a Magical Innkeeper. The building gains a rich magical reserve and preservation magic. Wanting to help beyond her immediate friends, Erin organizes a relief expedition to Esthelm. Adventurers, Liscor's people, and hundreds of Antinium join. Pawn commands the Antinium contingent, Belgrade and Anand direct reconstruction, and Zel begins teaching Pawn how a leader can comfort dying soldiers.

Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)

The mixed relief mission supplies and repairs Esthelm, demonstrating practical cooperation among Antinium, Drakes, Gnolls, humans, and adventurers despite enduring distrust. Meanwhile, Ryoka researches ancient threats while staying under Magnolia Reinhart's protection and surveillance. In Invercil she notices Laken and Durene after adventurers harass Durene for being half-troll. Laken's German speech leads Ryoka to suspect the truth, and they confirm that both came from Earth. Laken is an Emperor seeking help for avalanche-stricken River Farm. He purchases provisions, wagons, livestock, tools, escorts, and winter protection, using his authority without openly declaring his class. Ryoka has the Horns' recovered artifacts appraised and learns that their ancient wand is exceptionally valuable. She also learns that runner Valceif Godfrey was killed by bandits using a sleep spell. Though she blames herself because he had given her his protective charm, another runner places responsibility on the killers. Ryoka warns Laken to conceal his phone and continues her work while Magnolia Reinhart's agents track her.

Story so far - through chapter 23 (this book)

Back in Liscor, Erin attempts to save a Gnoll warrior's infected hand using cleaning, salt water, honey, and clean dressings suggested by Ryoka, while acknowledging that amputation may still be necessary. She plans a Christmas gathering and hires Octavia to investigate inexpensive matches and medicinal mold. The inn's visitors adopt Go, and Belgrade receives strategic encouragement from Zel. Ryoka and Laken form a guarded alliance based on their shared Earth origin. A caller linked to Wistrom contacts Ryoka's phone and claims to be gathering people from Earth, but neither runner nor Emperor trusts him with their location. Ryoka sells the Horns' ancient wand for equipment, magical items, and coin for the team. When a blizzard threatens River Farm before Laken's wagons can arrive, Ryoka carries emergency provisions through the storm. Ivolethe and other Frost Faeries guide her to the village. Ryoka delivers food, blankets, tools, and presents, comforts children grieving losses from the avalanche, and leaves River Farm able to survive the immediate crisis.

Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)

Erin holds Christmas at the Wandering Inn, but singing about home exposes her grief and forces her guests to recognize how much she wants to return to Earth. Zel and Klbkch nearly fight over the Antinium Wars until Xrn intervenes. She identifies herself as the Small Queen and says another surviving Progenitor, the Deathless, killed Zel's mentor. Xrn then takes Klbkch aside for undisclosed business, while Pisces discovers that a Griffin Hunt mage has secretly contacted a northern lord. Lyonette sees Erin crying alone and resolves to do something for her. On the winter solstice, Ryoka leaves River Farm and becomes trapped in a supernatural storm. Three inhuman beings at a fire offer alluring paths and restore her missing fingers, but she refuses them and escapes with help from unidentified lights. She burns the moving fingers and an altered scarf, remaining injured. At the same time, Erin welcomes three strange men into the inn. They consume its food and offer powerful treasures for her soul. Erin refuses every bargain. The visitors leave a white-silver coin behind, giving her physical proof of the encounter. The solstice ends with both women alive, but the entities and their purposes remain unknown.

How does it end? (ending)

River Farm survives its immediate shortage after Ryoka delivers supplies through the blizzard, and Laken remains responsible for its recovery. Erin's magical inn has become a center for travel, relief, and cross-species cooperation, but Christmas leaves her friends aware of how desperately she misses Earth. Lyonette resolves to help, without yet knowing how. Ceria and Pisces remain with the Horns, recognized by Cognita as Wistrom graduates but divided by Pisces' necromancy and exile. Rags continues south with an independent tribe while Tremborag pursues her and the Goblin Lord's larger force remains ahead. Xrn's private purpose, the Deathless, and a secret message to a northern lord leave wider conflicts unresolved. Ryoka and Laken maintain a cautious alliance as Earth arrivals and distrust the caller from Wistrom. During the solstice, Erin refuses to trade her soul and retains a white-silver coin. Ryoka rejects the entities' false restoration of her missing fingers, burns both the fingers and her altered scarf, and escapes with Ivolethe. The beings and Ryoka's luminous rescuers remain unidentified.
