In short (whole book)

Widower Vincent enters World-Tree Online shortly before an ARKUS update traps 500 million players under extreme time dilation. He masters runes and negative energy, joins Quinn and Xan in climbing beyond Terramor, and later reunites with Crow-Foot Jim. While they cross worlds and grow stronger, moderator Lucas strips rivals of power, imprisons opponents, and builds the Justiciars into a coercive regime. After Lucas conquers Midrun, the four spend 37 years training on deadly Aramar and return as the Void Knights. They unite a rebellion, invade Midrun, free the moderator Valerie, and reach Lucas's anti-spell trap. Vincent redirects the trap's frequencies and Mod Gun, bans Lucas, and kills his frozen body. Lucas awakens outside the game, proving that banned death is an exit and ending the update for every player. The Justiciars surrender, the captives are freed, and the four friends separate temporarily before continuing their climb.

Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)

Vincent, a 70-year-old widower, enters World-Tree Online after his longtime friend Jim urges him to try it. He begins as a Ranger near Night Rest, where an impulsive attack on the world boss Gazal ends in his first death. Elsewhere, moderators Lucas and Harper learn that an unusually long update is imminent. The update removes pain reduction, accelerates time to about one in-game year per five real-world seconds, and makes logging out impossible. Harper loses her moderator powers after contacting ARKUS. Lucas secretly tricks other moderators into doing the same, then immobilizes and hides the last empowered rival, leaving himself the only known moderator with enforcement abilities. In Night Rest, Vincent and Crow-Foot Jim help repel an enlarged monster horde. Vincent continues studying runes and the negative-energy effect he observed in arena combat. Fifteen in-game years later, he understands that the energy has no frequency, completes his spell Void Gun, and kills Gazal alone. The victory completes his Ranger quest, lets him add Mage as a subclass, and provides a crystal heart for travel. Vincent resolves to leave Terramor, although Jim declines the dangerous journey.

Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)

After Vincent enters World-Tree Online, an ARKUS update traps the players, removes pain reduction, and accelerates time to about one in-game year per five real-world seconds. Moderator Lucas secretly strips his peers of their special powers, while Vincent spends fifteen years mastering runes and creates the negative-energy spell Void Gun. He kills Gazal, adds Mage as a subclass, and prepares to leave Terramor. Vincent defeats arena champion Quinn, who joins him in climbing the World Tree in hope of finding an exit. Cleric Xan joins to become more independent. With Crow-Foot Jim, they form the World Knights and clear Sharky's Cavern before the three climbers depart. On Fountmel, Xan exposes the lich Draxas's hidden tether and Vincent destroys it, allowing a permanent kill. Branch travel prevents natural mana recovery, and rock trolls later force Vincent and Quinn to die while Xan carries their crystal hearts safely to Navron. Jim recruits Vincent into the Jiminy World Crickets, a guild connecting worlds. Reunited on Navron, the trio finds apparently ancient ruins beneath Layrock. The discovery suggests the prolonged update may have been anticipated, but ARKUS's purpose remains unproven.

Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)

An ARKUS update traps World-Tree Online's players for what may be centuries of experienced time. Lucas secretly becomes the only active moderator retaining enforcement powers, while Vincent masters runes and creates Void Gun. After killing Gazal, Vincent leaves Terramor with arena champion Quinn and Cleric Xan to climb toward a possible exit. The trio defeats major threats, survives dangerous branch travel, reaches Navron, and finds ancient ruins that may predate the crisis. Lucas begins imposing Justiciar control across the worlds and decides to conquer Midrun after the city resists him. Vincent's group reaches Midrun, and Crow-Foot Jim joins them after refusing Lucas control of his interworld guild. Beneath Valaheim, the four and the Ice Knight seal exposed world-magic pools and kill the boss feeding on them. Lucas then invades Midrun. The Ice Knight kills many Justiciars but is immobilized and imprisoned. Vincent, Jim, Quinn, and Xan confront Lucas after he takes the council tower. Void Gun penetrates his moderator shield, while Vincent's Gravity Shield blocks Mod Gun. They escape, proving Lucas is not invulnerable. Midrun remains occupied, Harper is among Lucas's prisoners, and the World Knights become hunted fugitives.

Story so far - through chapter 29 (this book)

The ARKUS update traps the players under extreme time dilation. Vincent develops negative-energy magic, then leaves Terramor with Quinn and Xan to climb toward a possible exit. Crow-Foot Jim later joins them in Midrun as Lucas expands the Justiciars, imprisons Harper, and eliminates political resistance. Lucas conquers Midrun, but Vincent's abilities pierce his shield, block Mod Gun, and let the four escape. The fugitives confirm that Zero Field can also release Mod Gun victims. They take a portable dieglass respawn shard and travel toward Aramar to train beyond Lucas's reach. On Ornrack they recover the stolen shard, obtain advanced books, and kill a fallen-angel boss. Aramar's gravity and monsters repeatedly kill them, but over 37 years they learn its threats and become far stronger while allies prepare a rebellion. Vincent forges Song of War, and he and Xan clear a deceptive dungeon. The full party then exposes the world boss's hidden chest eye and kills it with Black Cinder, becoming its first victors. They rename themselves the Void Knights. The four destroy a Justiciar search party at their homes, but Jim is identified before the last enemy dies. They depart knowing Lucas will soon learn they have returned.

Story so far - through chapter 33 (this book)

Trapped by ARKUS under extreme time dilation, Vincent creates negative-energy magic and begins climbing the World Tree with Quinn and Xan. Crow-Foot Jim later joins them as moderator Lucas turns the Justiciars into a coercive regime, imprisons Harper, and conquers Midrun. Vincent proves Lucas's powers can be resisted, and the four flee to Aramar. After 37 years of lethal training, they return as the Void Knights. Alarmed, Lucas attacks the rebel caravan on Rytle and freezes prisoners including Harper. The four save the caravan. A senior figure from Lucas's side arranges his own death so he can later supply a prison map, offering a route to Valerie, the captive moderator who may be able to ban Lucas. Roughly a thousand supporters gather to retake Midrun. Lucas organizes a defense meant to exhaust them and discovers that Sam, his Grand Chancellor's brother, is the rebels' covert source. He bans and imprisons Sam. Vincent's army survives jump-gate traps, enters Valaheim, and breaches Midrun's barrier. Xan's World Fountain sustains the attackers, Quinn breaks the wall, and the Void Knights defeat the initial formation. A counterattack reduces the invading army to about a hundred survivors, leaving the rebels inside the city but severely depleted before the castle assault.

Story so far - through chapter 38 (this book)

The ARKUS update traps the players for centuries of experienced time. Vincent develops negative-energy magic and climbs with Quinn, Xan, and later Crow-Foot Jim, while Lucas builds an authoritarian Justiciar regime and conquers Midrun. After proving Lucas's moderator powers can be countered, the four train on deadly Aramar for 37 years and return as the Void Knights. They rally a rebellion, save its caravan, and invade Midrun, but Lucas's defenses reduce the army to a small group. A rune bombardment leaves only Vincent, Jim, Quinn, Xan, Athena, and River to advance. Farah and her defenders die in the courtyard, as do Athena and River. Xan defeats the Wolf Lord, but his checkpoint restores him beside Lucas. The Void Knights reach the dungeon, where Vincent frees Valerie, Zhang, and other captives. Lucas's anti-spell hall then bans Xan, Quinn, and Valerie. Jim destroys the remaining elite fighters and himself rather than be captured. Repeated deaths let Vincent study the hall's frequencies. He redirects them with his rune hammer, defeats the restored Wolf Lord, wins the Grand Chancellor's defection, and reflects Mod Gun at Lucas. Vincent bans Lucas and kills his frozen body to test whether banned death is an exit, then frees the captives. Lucas's ultimate fate remains unknown.

Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)

An ARKUS update traps 500 million players under extreme time dilation. Vincent creates negative-energy magic and climbs the World Tree with Quinn, Xan, and Crow-Foot Jim, while moderator Lucas imprisons rivals and expands the Justiciars into an authoritarian regime. After Lucas conquers Midrun, Vincent proves his powers can be resisted. The four train for 37 years on deadly Aramar, return as the Void Knights, and lead a rebellion back into Midrun. The assault suffers enormous losses, including Athena and River. Vincent frees moderator Valerie and other captives, but Lucas's anti-spell trap bans Quinn, Xan, and Valerie. Vincent redirects the hall's rune frequencies and Mod Gun, bans Lucas, and kills his frozen body. The Grand Chancellor defects and orders the Justiciars to surrender. Valerie stops the remaining resistance, and Vincent frees Harper, Sam, and Zhang, while the Ice Knight's fate remains unknown. The surviving core group plans time apart before resuming its climb, while the Wolf Lord becomes a possible ally against the angels. Lucas awakens in reality with a permanent ban, proving that banned death is an exit and ending the update for every player. His abuses become public, Harper rejects him, and authorities move to detain him. The immediate war is over, but restoring damaged worlds, understanding ARKUS, and confronting the higher-world threat remain open.

How does it end? (ending)

Vincent turns Lucas's anti-spell hall against him, reflects Mod Gun, bans him, and kills his frozen body to test whether banned death provides an exit. Lucas awakens in reality, permanently barred from the game, and the update ends for all 500 million trapped players. The Grand Chancellor orders the Justiciars to surrender, while Valerie suppresses the last resistance. Quinn, Xan, Valerie, Harper, Sam, and Zhang are freed. The Ice Knight's release and final fate remain unknown. Harper rejects Lucas, and authorities move to detain him after his conduct becomes public. Vincent, Jim, Quinn, and Xan survive, but pause their climb for family time, recovery, and independent travel. Farah accepts the surrender. The Wolf Lord regrets his service and tentatively plans to meet Vincent on Styxis before a future campaign against the angels. Valerie and Sam may help repair damaged worlds. ARKUS's purpose and the ancient ruins remain unexplained, and the higher-world threat is still waiting when the group resumes its ascent.
