Across the first five books of the series, Percy Jackson learns that he is a demigod, the son of the sea god Poseidon, and finds a home at Camp Half-Blood among other children of the Greek gods. Over five summers he undertakes a series of dangerous quests: recovering Zeus's stolen master lightning bolt, retrieving the Golden Fleece to save the camp, helping rescue the goddess Artemis and his friend Annabeth, and braving the deadly Labyrinth, all while the Titan lord Kronos schemes to rise again by possessing the demigod Luke Castellan. In the final book Percy leads the young heroes in the battle for New York, a great prophecy is fulfilled, Luke sacrifices himself to destroy Kronos, and Percy turns down the gods' offer of immortality. With his girlfriend Annabeth Chase, daughter of Athena, and his best friend the satyr Grover Underwood, Percy has grown into an experienced hero. In this later chapter of his life he is a high-school senior working to earn a place at New Rome University, which requires him to keep completing tasks for the gods.

Still gathering the letters of recommendation he needs from the gods to attend New Rome University, Percy takes on another job to earn one. This time the goddess Hecate, the powerful triple goddess of magic and crossroads, hires Percy, Annabeth, and Grover to look after her home and her strange collection of magical pets while she is away. She warns them that her creatures are not ordinary and that any harm coming to them, or to her household, will bring down her wrath. What sounds like a simple weekend of pet-sitting quickly promises to become far more dangerous, as Percy and his friends settle into the goddess's uncanny mansion and begin to realize just how much can go wrong under her roof.
