Zero Hour
The fifth Expeditionary Force novel opens with the human crew of the Flying Dutchman adrift with a failing jump drive after Skippy, their alien AI ally, returns from an encounter with a hostile anti-Elder program that has trapped most of his abilities behind a firewall. With Skippy able to operate only ordinary ship systems and racing against an urgent deadline before that barrier fails completely, Joe and the crew raid an abandoned alien installation to recover a device that might restore him, only to discover it has been severed from the deeper power it needs. A planned second raid on a Thuranin installation called Bravo is aborted when a reconnaissance jump instead reveals a prepared ambush, forcing the damaged Dutchman into a desperate, unrepeatable escape by jumping directly through an active wormhole, which strands the crew, still without a working solution, far off its intended course.
