In short (whole book)

The Flying Dutchman is stranded with Skippy under attack by an anti-Elder worm. Failed conduit raids and a desperate escape lead the crew into the hidden Roach Motel system, where Elder defenses destroy the ship's engineering section. On Gingerbread, they survive hostile Thuranin descendants, find only a dead planetary conduit, and turn to a broken Sentinel. Bishop powers its active conduit at nearly fatal cost, enabling Skippy to destroy the worm. Over ten months the crew rebuilds the Dutchman from wreckage. They then destroy a concealed Maxolhx ship before it can carry proof of humanity out of the system and escape the Guardian field. Kristang civil war has removed the foreseeable threat to Earth, but relay intelligence about a secret operation involving an unnamed human major and team diverts the crew from a direct return home.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Joe commands the Flying Dutchman with Skippy, an Elder AI whose extraordinary abilities make the stolen Thuranin ship and its human crew viable. Their expedition has operated covertly amid the conflict between alien coalitions, while Earth remains vulnerable to discovery by stronger species. The crew includes military officers, pilots, technical specialists, and special-operations teams under a divided command structure: Joe leads shipboard operations, while the civilian mission commander Chotek holds broader authority. Skippy's communications sub-mind Nagatha Christie assists him. On Paradise, Major Emily Perkins leads another human team working with the Ruhar, and unresolved Kristang affairs continue to affect both human groups. The Dutchman begins this volume isolated from Earth and dependent on Skippy for capabilities its native systems cannot provide.

Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)

Skippy returns after Nagatha reaches the protected part of his consciousness, but an anti-Elder worm has forced him behind a firewall and stripped away most of his higher abilities. The Dutchman is already near mechanical failure, and Skippy needs an active Elder conduit before the worm breaks through. Smythe's team steals a conduit from the Wurgalan site at Barsoom, only to learn that it was severed long ago during an unexplained attack on Elder installations. The next target, Bravo, is a Thuranin trap. Adams determines that the enemy anticipated the destination by reasoning from the Barsoom raid. Thuranin and Maxolhx-aligned forces then herd the Dutchman toward a closing blockade. Joe proposes projecting the ship's jump through an Elder wormhole rather than entering it normally. The improvised Omega jump carries the ship through, displaces it in space and time, and violently collapses the wormhole behind it. Immediate pursuit ends, but the drive suffers extensive damage and the intelligent wormhole network is expected to prevent the maneuver from ever working again.

Story so far - through chapter 13 (this book)

Repairs restore limited jump capability, but Skippy's condition and the Dutchman's reactors continue to deteriorate. With no reachable conduit elsewhere, Chotek authorizes entry into a concealed Elder system from which previous expeditions never returned. Inside the Roach Motel, Elder Guardians attack because Skippy cannot authenticate in their expected manner. His improvised signal stops them, but their space-time distortion severs the ship's entire engineering section. The surviving forward hull has no propulsion or reactors and is moving toward a dangerous stellar pass. The crew prepares to evacuate toward a hidden planet they call Gingerbread, using the lifeboat and dropships while attempting to preserve the hull. Chotek plans for a permanent settlement, whereas Joe retains fuel and heavy synthesizers for broader reconnaissance. Gingerbread may contain a buried conduit, and the surrounding field of wreckage may hold enough compatible Thuranin machinery to assemble another ship. The first survey establishes breathable air and moderate conditions. The crew now has a difficult sequence of goals: survive on the planet, find a conduit before Skippy reaches zero hour, and determine whether salvage can provide a way out.

Story so far - through chapter 19 (this book)

The crew establishes a temporary camp on Gingerbread and discovers extensive underground structures. A reconnaissance flight finds cultivated land and is struck by a missile. Three crew members escape, but Joe is trapped in the cockpit as the Dragon sinks deep into a lake. The attackers are Thuranin descendants whose community has survived on the planet for centuries. Skippy concludes that his earlier order for the Guardians to stand down allowed them to reactivate stored weapons. While Smythe's force recovers the other pilots and fights off poorly functioning combots, Joe remains sealed underwater. Adams refuses to let Skippy abandon the rescue problem. Attempts to lower the lake initially move the wreck deeper, but Joe realizes the ejection-seat nanocord can cut an exit. He escapes the aircraft, reaches the surface, and then becomes trapped in mud under rifle fire. Tether balloons finally lift him out of range for retrieval. Reconnaissance continues because the crew still needs a conduit and must understand the other stranded inhabitants. Artificial craters suggest that Guardians periodically destroy survivor settlements once their technology advances too far. Skippy identifies a distant ruined complex with underground tunnels as the strongest remaining conduit lead.

Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)

The expedition enters the ruined underground complex and finds a conduit in damaged Elder machinery, but it is already burned out. Ancient maintenance bots activate, and an emergency door separates Bishop and Adams from Smythe's team. Bishop and Adams use a flooded shaft and explosives to open another route, allowing the trapped team to swim through the chamber and escape. With no other likely site on Gingerbread, the planetary search ends. Bishop then leads a long salvage mission into the orbital wreckage. Skippy detects part of a dead Sentinel that is highly likely to hold working conduits, but Chotek initially forbids the approach because it could provoke the Guardians. He later authorizes a cautious attempt. Guardian restrictions keep the Condor far away, so Bishop crosses the remaining distance alone in a suit. He finds an active conduit and powers it despite knowing it may exhaust his life support. Skippy disappears into higher space-times while Bishop nearly suffocates. The conduit ultimately lets Skippy destroy the anti-Elder worm and restore enough suit function for Bishop to survive until rescue. Zero hour is over. Skippy can now use Guardian navigation records to turn the uncertain wreckage search into a practical rebuilding plan, although restoring the badly degraded Nagatha remains delicate work.

Story so far - through chapter 28 (this book)

Over ten months, Guardian records guide the recovery of compatible wreckage while the crew moves between Gingerbread and the disabled Dutchman. The Thuranin settlement proves larger than expected and mostly consists of natural-born descendants. Two young Thuranin seek human contact but are killed by their own armed elders before Chotek's party reaches them. The rebuilt Dutchman finally passes a full-thrust test and collects the expedition, though the improvised ship lacks many original capabilities. As it heads toward the edge of the damping field, a hidden Maxolhx vessel awakens and begins fleeing. Its broadcast contains proof that humans operate stolen Thuranin equipment. The field blocks the signal for the moment, but the enemy will eventually escape. Bishop first uses micro-wormholes to bluff that the crew controls the Guardians. He then sends stripped missiles ahead as passive sensors; their simultaneous destruction reveals the Maxolhx position. For the final attack, the crew mounts detached jump-drive hardware on a disposable dropship and creates a temporary wormhole inside the enemy vessel. Chotek approves the extreme plan as preferable to activating Guardians that would destroy both ships. The attack eliminates the Maxolhx vessel, contains the evidence of humanity, and leaves the Dutchman damaged but operational.

Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)

An escape pod from the destroyed Maxolhx ship contains two hibernating crew members. One dies during revival, and the other remains hostile after being confined aboard the Dutchman. He uses internal nanotechnology in an unsuccessful attempt to seize a maintenance bot, then kills himself. The Dutchman spends months crossing the remainder of the damping field under severe mechanical strain. Skippy warns that the Guardians will not allow a return and will probably destroy both the remaining derelicts and the Thuranin population on Gingerbread. The ship jumps out through a weak part of the field, sacrifices twelve jump coils, and makes a second jump to safety. Elsewhere, Maxolhx investigators connect the disrupted Omega wormhole with wider network anomalies, including activity near Earth, but they do not identify the human crew. The Dutchman intercepts a Kristang relay while traveling at high speed. Its data shows that civil war has engulfed all Kristang clans and removed their foreseeable threat to Earth. Skippy also judges the weakened Thuranin unlikely to threaten Earth for roughly twenty years. The planned homecoming is interrupted, however, by intelligence about a secret Kristang operation involving an unnamed human major and team who are away from Paradise. The crew must consider helping them before returning to Earth.

How does it end? (ending)

Bishop survives activating the Sentinel conduit, and Skippy destroys the anti-Elder worm. Skippy regains substantial ability, but his origins, missing memories, and the ancient attacks on Elder sites remain unresolved. Nagatha survives severe degradation in storage while Skippy attempts to restore her carefully. The crew rebuilds the Flying Dutchman from salvaged wreckage and escapes the Roach Motel after destroying a covert Maxolhx vessel and containing its evidence of humanity. Bishop, Chotek, Chang, Smythe, Adams, Desai, Simms, and Rene Giraud remain with the surviving expedition. The ship is mobile but improvised, damaged, and in need of fuel and cautious handling. The Thuranin descendants on Gingerbread are left behind, and Skippy expects the Guardians may destroy them and the remaining derelicts. The Kristang civil war makes that species no foreseeable threat to Earth, while the weakened Thuranin are unlikely to pose a danger for roughly twenty years. Before the Dutchman can go home, a relay reveals a secret Kristang operation involving an unnamed human major and team away from Paradise, creating the crew's next immediate problem.
