After claiming the Leviathan Depths, Felix Nevarre installs an Itten chancellor and departs as threats converge on Nagast and Harwatch. A fragment of divine regalia reveals that the Hierocracy controls another Unbound, Imara. Felix divides his expedition, sending Zara Cyrene to reinforce Harwatch while he aids the naga against the Fathom. Beneath the flooded hills, he discovers a failing ancient seal and learns that the Fathom is a Dusk Dragon possessed by a sliver of a night goddess. Felix and Vessilia Dayne free the dragon, destroy the sliver's hold over the Deep King, and return to Harwatch with new allies. During the siege, Vess bonds the dragon into a golden wyrmling, while a cursed High Guard blade severs Pit's wings. Pit helps Felix complete all nine core pillars, and Felix kills the four linked High Guard in a forced territorial challenge. Harwatch survives, but Felix and several companions are badly injured and the Hierocracy's retaliation remains imminent.

Previously: Felix Nevarre, an Earth-born Unbound, became Autark of Nagast and gathered a diverse company of allies. Pit is his bonded guardian companion. Vessilia Dayne is a dragoon-trained spear fighter, Zara Cyrene a chanter and diplomat, Evie Aren a chain-and-ice combatant, Harn a veteran forge master, Atar V'as a fire mage, and Alistair a force mage and inscriptionist. Karys Taiv advises Felix while helping administer Nagast, and Cal leads Harwatch. Felix's growing power and territorial authority have placed him in direct conflict with the Hierocracy. The struggle also involves other Earth-born Unbound, divine powers, and ancient primordials. As this volume begins, Felix's people hold Nagast, but the Hierocracy remains hostile and the consequences of his latest territorial battle have not yet settled.

Felix awakens after defeating the territorial lord and surviving a primordial baptism. He now rules both the transformed Leviathan Depths and its flooded city, while his body bears permanent primordial changes. Pit has evolved into a smaller Primordial Stormwing tenku and can speak aloud. Vessilia Dayne, Beef, and Beef's undead companion survived, though several allies have been altered by the battle. The restored sea ends an ancient people's racial quest, and they offer Felix authority regalia tied to the territory. The city itself is badly damaged, crowded with injured civilians, and still contains hidden paladins. Felix rejects taking rewards away from the restored people and resists ruling the city personally. Instead, he places a storage beacon in the ruined temple and brings healing supplies from Nagast. Atar V'as returns visibly transformed after entering the Highest Flame, while Nagast prepares for a likely Hierocracy assault.

Felix defeats a swarm of mana-warped Fathom Hatchlings attacking the city and captures a paladin mana ship, but finds evidence of a far larger creature beneath the walls. Karys Taiv warns that the draconic threat may extend toward Nagast. The shaman of the restored sea people explains how his ancestors accepted a curse to contain a primordial after being deceived by a Leviathan urge. His people join Felix's territory, and Felix offers the shaman the chancellorship. A Sworn assassin interrupts the offer, escapes through a disposable body, and kills guards during the pursuit. Felix proceeds with a public installation under heavy protection. The shaman accepts the ancient crown and the position willingly, but paladins and Sworn attack the ceremony with poisoned arrows. Felix uses his territorial storm authority to destroy the attackers' firing position while his guard shields the new chancellor. The appointment stands, but the coordinated assault proves that the new government remains contested.

Felix captures the surviving Sworn assassin and confirms that fearful nobles helped sponsor the attack. Breaking the assassin's lethal oath evolves Felix's bond magic into Skein of Fate, but the captive dies. Felix's forces trace the oath to a merchant estate, arrest the conspirators, and bring a powerful fire Matron before him. Felix kills the merchant lord and attacking paladins, then binds the Matron and the household to serve the Itten chancellor and the territory. His fleet leaves the stabilized city carrying recruits, civilians, and families. During the voyage, Vess reveals that Felix's strengthened link has transformed her core and dragoon skills into unfamiliar draconic forms. Those powers end a sea-monster attack but leave her disturbed. Beef then reveals a fragment of the Pathless's divine regalia that has secretly compelled and silenced him. Felix removes it and follows its connection north, glimpsing a heavily armored Unbound traveling with an elderly Pathless priest.

Zara seals the divine regalia fragment after determining that it attracted Fathom spawn and exploited Beef's hollow spirit. Felix then helps Atar rebuild a devastated core, studies Evie's primordial-influenced skill evolutions, and learns from Harn's successful Adept advancement. Pit's evolution has given him a true core space shaped like the Foglands and centered on a Nemean-star core. Felix begins reorganizing his own core around his Hunger while the company trains at sea. Beef chooses necromancy as his intended path but refuses to reveal his core space. Atar conceals a hostile flame presence that urges him toward violence, while Vess fears that her altered core has ended her recognized dragoon progression. Felix and Zara repeat their ritual to find the remaining Earth-born Unbound. They glimpse several distant targets and learn that the armored woman is Imara, an Unbound working under Hierocracy control. Imara reaches an earth-moving gnome during the vision and senses Felix's observation strongly enough to break the ritual.

The fleet reaches flooded land beyond Caliph Pass and survives a Fathom Depth Worm attack. Felix's soldiers clear its den, rescue captives, and recover the den core. He then enters devastated Bogfeld under the alias Silas Vale, with Pit disguised as a direhound pup. Knight Tanda brings them to the settlement's redoubt, whose defenders are exhausted by nightly monster attacks. Felix learns that the flood destroyed the pass fort and displaced dangerous creatures throughout the region. He detects an unexplained ward beneath the redoubt while its leaders mistake his approaching ships for a possible enemy force. Before negotiations begin, a Fathom-corrupted slaughter nettle assaults the settlement. Pit abandons his disguise, and Felix emerges to join the defense. Harn, Beef, Alistair, and the Fiend's Claw arrive from the fleet, and together they kill the monster. Felix then reveals that Silas Vale is Felix Nevarre, Autark of Nagast and the Leviathan Depths.

While Hierocracy High Guard prepare to breach Nagast's outer defense, Felix helps Bogfeld survive repeated attacks. Zara and local mages drive away the floodwater, and Felix raises much of the town above the new waterline and builds stronger walls. Evidence shows that the Fathom spreads dissonant blue ooze to force monster evolution and control a growing horde. Felix establishes an exchange of healing and herbal knowledge with the Menders, while Garrox reports that the naga can no longer contain the expanding underwater dens. News then arrives that thousands of Hierocracy troops have entered Felix's territory. Felix leaves Bogfeld fortified and takes his fleet through the submerged Hestus temple, where the Deep King asks him to confront the Fathom. Felix restores a damaged Shadowgate and changes his plan: Zara will lead the main force toward Nagast, while Felix stays to aid the naga. Vess remains because the enemy is draconic, and Isla is assigned as the smaller party's healer.

Zara leads the soldiers and civilians through the Shadowgate while Felix remains with Pit, Vess, Beef, Beef's undead companion, Isla, and naga escorts. The Deep King identifies the Fathom's center as Kazma and says a dragon controls the warped spawn. Felix's party equips itself from the naga's recovered goods and begins a stealthy underwater descent. Beef uses a remote undead worker and Felix's mana to help build ships in Nagast from across the gate, completing the work at great strain. The underwater team bypasses one den but is later forced into combat, exposing its presence. In the Mountains That Howl, immense currents churn above chasms filled with the same corrupting ooze. A pursuing horde and two depthworms nearly trap the party. Felix strips the ooze from many attackers, breaking their coordination, but the consumed material connects him directly to the Fathom's mind. He survives the hostile contact and severs it, leaving the enemy aware of him and an unknown challenge notification waiting unanswered.

Zara's force reaches Nagast and continues toward Harwatch, where a Hierocracy invasion is approaching. Beef unlocks Affinity and Resonance after his remote construction feat. Vess considers Isla's proposed temper recomposition to reverse her dragon-altered skills, while Felix distrusts the risks and incomplete explanation. Felix forms a powerful but volatile skill array, and Pit begins learning to read. In Kazma, the underwater party abandons pure stealth and ambushes Fathom patrols to gain strength. Felix completes the Proving and earns an Adept Magus title, while Pit advances several abilities. Their progress ends at a carved metal door in a submerged spire. The door recognizes Felix's authority over Nagast and the Leviathan Depths, pulls the party inside, drains the chamber, and provides breathable air. Felix confirms that the structure is not a Nym temple. A second authority prompt opens a green-marked inner route, revealing a huge illuminated corridor before impenetrable fog rises and blocks all perception.

The fog is an invasive illusion built from Felix's memories. He consumes its array and recovers a memory of ancient researchers who constructed the tower to study and contain a watched threat. Deeper inside, the party finds a corrupted spirit tree and learns that its many bodies form a vast seal around a separate divine-or-greater creature in a central breach. Felix restores the tree, awakening its incorporeal chanter companion, who guides the group into damaged root tunnels toward the Fathom. The seal remains barely intact. During the advance, a tendril of ooze strikes Beef and traps him inside his own core space. Felix and Pit enter after him. They discover that Beef's familiar bedroom-like core conceals a void chamber where he is immobilized on a throne. The regalia's echo is containing part of the invasion but also freezing him in place. His core is missing its proper spirit component, and an unknown woman appears bound to a mirrored throne amid the remnants of that lost spirit.

The bound woman is revealed as Beef's separate nascent spirit, shaped in the image of his mother but not actually her. As Felix holds Beef's damaged core together, Beef finally confronts the primordial inheritance he has suppressed. Outside, the root tunnel collapses during a battle with an ooze behemoth. Felix escapes the core in time to protect the party from the flood, but powerful lindworms seize them and kill several naga hostages. Felix kills one captor and demands to be taken to its leader, deliberately using surrender to reach the Fathom. Meanwhile at Harwatch, Evie and Atar help defeat the fungal assault just as the Hierocracy's army arrives. The underwater captives are carried into Chasma while Felix and Beef remain occupied with their inner struggles. At the center, an enormous ooze-coated dragon awakens. Isla pierces part of its concealment and exposes its race: the power commanding the Fathom horde is a Dusk Dragon.

The Dusk Dragon is a moon-touched vessel controlled by a divine sliver. Vess enters its memories and learns that its will has been suppressed, then chooses to help free it despite the history between dragoons and dragons. Beef completes enough of his reconstructed core to strike through the possessing force. Vess strengthens the dragon's resistance, and Felix strips away the external ooze and divine shadow. The displaced sliver reforms inside Felix's core, forcing him to restore the ancient seal and reproduce its structure within himself. Felix's Hunger consumes the entity after he combines harmony and dissonance against it. The sliver's contingency then opens a route for a possessed naga army led by the Deep King. Beef restrains attackers with his new chitinous manifestation while the freed dragon explains that the king carried another dormant fragment. Felix burns the control away from the Deep King and his followers, then captures and consumes the remaining fragment. The immediate assault ends with both dragon and naga freed.

Felix refuses the freed Dusk Dragon's request for death, and Vess maintains that neither their new connection nor her aid gives her authority over his choice. The group discovers that irregular time in the breach has allowed the battle at Harwatch to advance far beyond their expectation. With help from hidden fragments and the dragon, Felix escapes and races toward the city. Harwatch's defenders are being driven back by Hierocracy initiates, paladins, inquisitors, and four elite High Guard. A small rearguard holds outside the walls while enemy mana ships prepare to fire on the gates. Zara's newly completed crystalline shield absorbs the first cannon blast but is almost entirely depleted. She releases hundreds of volunteer defenders from its siphon rather than let the array drain them into collapse. Elite attackers overwhelm field commanders and prepare a mass spear strike. Before it lands, Felix arrives through a shadowed passage riding the freed Dusk Dragon and leading naga and serpent allies.

Felix's arrival reverses Harwatch's collapse. The freed Dusk Dragon spends his remaining strength clearing enemy troops, then falls near death. Vess chooses to preserve him through a voluntary Draconic Bond, and he returns as a small golden wyrmling. Atar and Alistair destroy two mana ships with an improvised fire-and-force weapon. The High Guard press Felix while incomplete pillars form inside his core. Their swordmaster severs Pit's wings with a cursed blade, causing severe physical and spirit damage. Pit enters Felix's core, steadies the process, and helps complete all nine pillars. When the swordmaster threatens Harwatch with a firestorm and challenges Felix's authority, Felix absorbs the attack, finishes his advancement, and kills all four High Guard. Surviving Hierocracy troops are captured or driven into the forest. Pit remains converged with Felix during recovery, while Vess and the wyrmling survive under healer care. Harwatch begins reinforcing its defenses for the expected retaliation, and Felix resolves to coordinate with the other Unbound.

Felix returns from the breach as Harwatch's defenses are near collapse. The freed Dusk Dragon spends most of his remaining power opening the battlefield, then survives through a voluntary Draconic Bond with Vessilia Dayne and becomes a small golden wyrmling. Atar V'as and Alistair destroy two Hierocracy mana ships, and Zara Cyrene's shield prevents the first cannon strike from breaking the city. A High Guard swordmaster severs Pit's wings and damages his spirit, but Pit remains linked with Felix and takes a decisive role in completing Felix's nine-pillar formation. Felix then kills all four High Guard and wins the territorial challenge. Most surviving invaders are captured or routed. Pit remains converged with Felix while both recover from spirit wounds, and Vess and the wyrmling survive under healer care. Harwatch still has casualties, prisoners, incomplete defenses, and an expected Hierocracy response. Felix directs his allies to strengthen the city's shield with the Merc Enclosure ritual and concludes that the scattered Unbound must coordinate for the conflict ahead.
