The first book of the Red Mage series begins when Coast Guard intelligence specialist Drew, stationed on an underground watch floor, finds that his world has changed overnight: electronics fail, and he gains access to magic-like abilities as Earth becomes a monster-filled training ground under the authority of a distant Human Protectorate. Guided by a tutorial program, Drew arms himself with an initial set of combat and support spells and fights his way through his underground bunker toward the surface. Along the way he finds and joins a handful of fellow Coast Guard survivors, and together they pool their abilities to scavenge supplies, treat injuries, and plan an escape from the facility while fighting off repeated creature attacks.
