A Coast Guard intelligence specialist isolated deep in a Washington, DC bunker when Advent begins. Aevis guides him through the new system, which grants him an unusually large selection of Xatherite.

Appears from the start

Earth-3's tutorial artificial intelligence. Aevis explains Advent, the Human Protectorate, Xatherite, and the planet's new function as a dangerous training environment.

Unidentified furred biped (Minor)

First appears in chapter 5

A large furred biped that strikes Drew in the bunker and withdraws before he can identify it. Its behavior appears intelligent or tactical.

Katie (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 6

A Coast Guard petty officer sheltering with other survivors inside the bunker. Her abilities provide light and a summoned armored construct.

Katie Sabin (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 15

The full name of the Coast Guard petty officer traveling with Drew. As Sarah remains unconscious, Katie helps equip the party, carry their injured companion, and decide how to distribute the Xatherite won from Chakri.

Sarah Rothschild (Supporting)

A Coast Guard ensign who leads the bunker shelter group. She has exhausted much of her energy healing others.

Mitch (Supporting)

A survivor with red Xatherite who shelters with the bunker group. Before meeting Drew, he was the group's only person able to attack at range.

Juan (Supporting)

An indigo-Xatherite survivor whose abilities include illusory attacks and a lesser earth elemental. He joins Drew's original bunker party as a ranged combatant and scout.

Rob Omondi (Minor)

A huge, furred, light-averse creature that breaks open Juan's tomb and leads the transformed Juan away. The survivors recognize him as Rob Omondi in an altered state.

Chakri (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 13

The leader of an orc force attacking Drew's group in the bunker. Chakri calls Drew a Death Weaver, claims his clans oppose such mages, and demands that Katie and Sarah be surrendered.

Daryl (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 20

An invisible survivor who escaped the DIA captors. He seeks help freeing his captive wife and offers Drew shelter and intelligence as a mana storm approaches.

Daryl's wife (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 20

Daryl's spouse, held with hundreds of other people inside the DIA complex. Her captivity is the central reason he remains near the enemy position and works toward a rescue.

Chief petty officer (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 23

A chief petty officer among the first prisoners freed from the DIA captors. The conditions governing this officer’s healing ability are not yet clear.

Bill (Supporting)

A Navy chief among the first prisoners freed from the DIA captors. He becomes their acting leader and has a healing ability that works through an embrace, along with several strengthening abilities.

The full name of the Coast Guard intelligence specialist leading the effort to free the DIA captives.

Jolie (Supporting)

A 17-year-old former captive who can cause headaches and temporary deafness. She joins the party traveling to find Katie and Sarah after the first successful prisoner rescue.

Trey (Supporting)

A 19-year-old Army private freed from captivity. His abilities create stationary illusions and duplicate images, making him useful to the developing rescue plan.

JP (Supporting)

A police officer scouting from the large survivor community at Nats Park. He carries several firearms and volunteers to help free the DIA prisoners.

Robbi (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 26

A police officer and Nats Park scout equipped for close combat. He creates protective illusions and wears defensive armor.

Themis (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 28

An Olympus escort aligned with the Order of the Scale. Themis receives Drew during his sleep-sink visit and enforces limits on what may be disclosed to someone from a newly Advented world.

Cassius Felix Ares (Supporting)

The admiral of Olympus and an Order of the Dragon assault mage. He identifies the strategic importance of the Washington, DC primary nexus and offers Drew a position as a page, with possible future training.

Unnamed defender (Minor)

First appears in chapter 35

An unnamed defender in the survivors’ field position who intervenes when a troll threatens Drew and is killed during the assault.

Frank (Minor)

First appears in chapter 37

A defender in the survivors' field position who dies protecting Drew during the massed assault.

Retribution (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 36

An inner presence connected to Drew's cold rage. It identifies itself as a part of him awakened through Xatherite, although the outside powers who contact him say it has emerged dangerously early.

Red-Xatherite shooter (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 37

A firearms combatant with red Xatherite whose shots can leave a trail of fire. She joins Drew, Daryl, Sarah, and Robbi on the rescue mission through the tunnel.

Brady Cook (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 37

A defender whose Penetrating Shot is designed to pass through armor and other protections. He remains with Katie, JP, and Trey when Drew forms the tunnel rescue team.

Kara (Minor)

First appears in chapter 40

A member of the larger survivor group who sends Drew a warning through Daryl. She reports that Robbi is secretly communicating with someone and discussing a movement toward a bridge, but cannot establish his purpose.

Gary (Minor)

First appears in chapter 41

A captive teenager with red Xatherite. When he and two companions ask to join the pit rescue, Drew instead appoints him to lead the young defenders holding the tunnel entrance.

Angela (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 42

Daryl's wife. She dies from injuries inflicted by the trolls despite Sarah Rothschild's efforts to heal her.

Robed ritual leader (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 19

An unidentified robed figure seen presiding over a live human sacrifice at the DIA complex.

Troll shaman (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 31

The shaman who earlier presided over a human sacrifice at the DIA complex. The figure reappears during the attack on Katie's supply party and strikes Drew from range.

Tracy Hoffacker (Supporting)

Also known as Major Hoffacker

First appears in chapter 43

An Air Force major among the people rescued from the excavation complex. Her rank places her among the senior officers available to organize the exhausted survivors.

Matt Snyder (Supporting)

Also known as Captain Snyder

A naval captain rescued from the excavation complex. He assumes senior authority, establishes a military command structure, and orders preparations for the survivors to leave at first light.

Dax Kyle (Minor)

First appears in chapter 44

A PFC who accompanies Drew to inspect the buried structure. His orange Xatherite can turn his skin to stone, although using it imposes severe fatigue.

Adam Jones (Minor)

First appears in chapter 44

An airman who accompanies Drew to the buried node. His violet Xatherite grants pterokinesis, which he uses to clear the gate after having covertly slowed the captors' excavation work.

Glenn Wilson (Minor)

First appears in chapter 44

An airman who joins Drew's inspection of the buried node. His abilities include magical throwing daggers and protection against incoming projectiles.

Drew Michalik I (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 45

An alternate iteration of Drew based in Colorado Springs. Contacted through Aevis, he serves as a superior officer and advises Drew Michalik III about node ownership, development, and the future danger posed by world bosses.

Drew Michalik III (Protagonist)

First appears in chapter 45

The identity Drew learns after Aevis connects him with another iteration of himself. He is the third known Drew Michalik and the newly recognized owner of the DIA node.
