When Advent transforms Earth-3, Coast Guard specialist Drew escapes an underground bunker with Katie Sabin and Sarah Rothschild after losing their first companions to hostile creatures. He meets Daryl, frees an initial group of captives from the Ashala at DIA, and builds a larger rescue force. A sleep-sink encounter with Cassius Felix Ares identifies Drew as an unusually early assault mage and directs him toward the primary nexus, while secretly arming him with Aeon. After a troll assault triggers the dangerous inner Retribution, Drew leads a tunnel operation that frees hundreds more prisoners, though Daryl's wife dies. Drew kills the troll shaman and claims the buried DIA node, learning that he is Drew Michalik III. He retains the node as a Dungeon Training Center and gains new rank and gravity abilities. The book closes with 228 survivors evacuating the tunnels at night as wereghouls gather behind them.

Advent disables Earth's technology and turns Earth-3 into a monster-filled training environment under the Human Protectorate. Trapped five floors underground, Coast Guard intelligence specialist Drew receives an unusually extensive tutorial from Aevis and slots eight Xatherite abilities. He fights through giant spiders, finds a rare teleportation crystal, and collapses from his injuries at another watch floor. Four survivors save him: Katie, Sarah Rothschild, Mitch, and Juan. Their abilities complement one another, with Sarah providing healing and sensing, Mitch serving as the close-range defender, Juan using illusions and an earth elemental, and Katie supplying light, barriers, and an armored construct. Drew's exceptional number of nodes and ability to cast without spoken words distinguish him from the group. Together they recover his supplies and destroy a spider egg nest. With food secured but no relief likely to arrive, they decide to abandon the shelter and seek other survivors.

The group's escape is interrupted by an organized ambush from green-skinned humanoids who specifically call for red mages to be killed. Juan dies during the attack, and the survivors later see his body rise in a furred, light-averse form and depart with the transformed Rob Omondi. The group concludes that some human corpses can become wereghouls. On a lower floor, Chakri leads another force against them, identifies Drew as a Death Weaver, and demands Katie and Sarah. Drew slots his teleportation ability during the battle and draws Chakri's pursuers away. He defeats Chakri, but returns to find Mitch dead and Sarah unconscious with a broken leg. Chakri's death raises Drew to level one, promotes him within the Protectorate, inducts him into the Order of the Dragon, and awards additional Xatherite. Drew and Katie burn Mitch's body to prevent transformation, then face the task of carrying Sarah out of the bunker.

Drew and Katie equip themselves from the defeated attackers, splint Sarah's leg, and carry her into daylight. They establish a temporary shelter in a base exchange, but Sarah remains unconscious. While searching alone for transport, Drew encounters the transformed Juan, kills him when he attacks, and burns his remains. Drew continues toward Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling and reaches the DIA complex. From a rooftop he witnesses robed figures sacrificing living prisoners. He attacks the ritual with storm magic and discovers that the captors are nonhuman, green-blooded beings he tentatively considers trolls. The sight of the burned victims also revives memories of an earlier fire trauma. Daryl, an invisible survivor who escaped capture, finds Drew as a mana storm approaches. He explains that the captors emerged from DIA, rounded up hundreds of people, and conduct repeated sacrifices before storms. Daryl's wife remains among the prisoners. Drew takes shelter with him and gains an ally for a rescue, though Katie and Sarah remain behind at the exchange.

Drew and Daryl ambush a guarded food detail and free nineteen prisoners. Chief Bill heals Drew and helps organize the liberated group, while Jolie and Trey contribute abilities useful to a larger rescue. Drew returns to the exchange with Bill and Jolie, reunites with Katie, and finds Sarah still alive behind an illusion-protected wall. Bill restores Sarah, and police scouts JP and Robbi offer support from a survivor community at Nats Park. During Drew's first real sleep since Advent, Themis takes him through a sleep sink to Olympus. Admiral Cassius Felix Ares identifies him as an exceptionally early assault mage and says the Washington, DC primary nexus must be claimed. Ares offers him a place as a page and gives him a mental defense plus Aeon, a singular Xatherite whose name Drew is bound by a lethal contract not to reveal. Katie and Sarah reject Ares's claim that Drew should value his strategic survival above individuals. Drew remains committed to freeing the DIA captives as the expanded group prepares armor, provisions, and an extraction plan.

The rescue group plans to open an exterior escape route from DIA and move the captives toward Nats Park, but a large Ashala attack forces a change. The survivors leave the commissary and form a defensive position in the open. Katie transfers Metallurgy to Drew for safekeeping, and the two acknowledge their romantic commitment before the expected battle. Sarah organizes the formation, while Daryl scouts invisibly through a summoned bird's vision. During the assault, a ranged caster injures Drew and Bill heals him. An unnamed defender dies while protecting Drew, triggering an unfamiliar cold rage. Drew kills more than fifty attackers and collapses from mana exhaustion. While he is unconscious, Ares and Themis warn that the power activated far too early, may destroy his humanity if repeatedly used, and has exposed Earth to outside attention. An inner presence identifies itself as Retribution, a part of Drew awakened through Xatherite. Drew wakes nearly a day later to find that the survivors held their position and gained several new abilities, but his new power remains involuntary and dangerous.

Daryl discovers a tunnel leading toward the captives. Drew enters it with Daryl, Sarah, Robbi, and a firearms combatant while Katie, JP, Trey, and Brady Cook defend the camp. The rescue team breaches the far door, kills the guards, and frees dozens of prisoners from cages. A warning from Kara alleges that Robbi has a secret contact and intends to move people toward a bridge without a senator's knowledge, but neither his contact nor his purpose is established. Daryl locates hundreds more prisoners forced to excavate a buried blue-metal structure. Three captive teenagers help hold the tunnel entrance while the main team attacks the pit. During a brief parley, the troll shaman claims the system displaced its species and drove its people into conflict, promising freedom in exchange for human sacrifices. The battle saves only part of the pit population. Drew kills the shaman, but Sarah cannot heal Daryl's wife, who dies from catastrophic injuries. The living regroup in the entrance room. Major Tracy Hoffacker and Captain Matt Snyder emerge as senior officers, Sarah takes charge of combat organization, and shortages make a rapid rendezvous with the stadium survivors essential. Drew prepares to inspect the still-unclaimed node despite Snyder's objections.

Drew enters the buried structure with Dax Kyle, Adam Jones, and Glenn Wilson. Aevis identifies it as Primary Nexus Subnode 8-3 and transfers ownership to Drew, who renames it the DIA node. The facility is a fourth-tier Dungeon Training Center, but Aevis lacks the records needed to price its upgrades. Through a mana-funded consultation, Drew meets Drew Michalik I and learns that he himself is Drew Michalik III. His alternate counterpart advises him to retain the training center, develop food and fighters, and prepare for world bosses that may seize nodes. Drew keeps the current designation, purchases remote monitoring, and selects Korath as the future base creature. Claiming the node raises him to level two and sub-lieutenant and completes a constellation that grants new gravity abilities. Before the survivors can depart normally, corpses in the pit begin rising as wereghouls. Drew also sees a more aware type, which he calls a wereghast, apparently directing the others. Daryl buries his wife, accepts Major Mental Blow from Drew, and returns to scouting. With 228 survivors, little food or water, and undead gathering in the tunnels, the group chooses an immediate nighttime evacuation. Sarah directs security, the rescued officers accompany the column, and Drew takes the rear guard as they leave for the soccer-field camp.

The pit rescue leaves 228 survivors together, including many children, but their food and water are almost gone. Daryl's wife dies from her injuries and he buries her near the node before returning to scouting. Drew claims the buried DIA node, keeps it configured as a Dungeon Training Center, and begins converting it to produce Korath. The claim raises him to level two and sub-lieutenant, while making him responsible for defending a strategic site that future world bosses may seize. Sarah directs security, Katie remains among the defenders, and Major Hoffacker and Captain Snyder join the evacuation leadership. As corpses throughout the tunnels become wereghouls, a more aware wereghast appears to coordinate them. The survivors choose an immediate nighttime withdrawal toward the soccer-field camp and eventual stadium reunion, with Drew covering the rear. The node's defense, Robbi's secret contact and bridge plan, Drew's hazardous Retribution, and the aims of Ares and the wider orders remain unresolved.
