Bastion

By Phil Tucker

Bastion follows Scorio, who wakes with no memory beyond a vague sense of dying, trapped in a deadly gauntlet of trials alongside three other amnesiac strangers. When the ordeal ends in resurrection rather than death, he learns that he and his companions are reborn Great Souls bound to a magical hierarchy called Bastion, repeatedly cycled into new bodies to fight an unseen enemy. Before Scorio can process his second chance, an ancient records system brands him a dangerous criminal from a forgotten past life and has him thrown into a lightless underground prison. Stripped of his companions and his power, he must escape the depths alone, then claw his way up through Bastion's criminal underworld and its brutal path of cultivation, determined to understand who he was rather than accept the city's judgment of him.
