In short (whole book)

Scorio awakens without memories, survives a lethal rebirth gauntlet, and is condemned by Bastion's Academy for crimes from forgotten lives. After escaping the Warrens, he trains under Naomi, reunites with Leonis and Lianshi, and forces his way back into the Academy. His dangerous pursuit of advancement fractures his heart, while Imogen's attack exposes Bastion's weakness and deepens public unrest. Scorio rejects Praximar's blackmail and House Camara's support, then uses Nox's imperial gel and Naomi's mana to become an Emberling. He enters the final gauntlet with Naomi, Leonis, and Lianshi, reaches Tomb Spark after they fall, and narrowly surpasses Jova Spike to win. Scorio and Jova reject the Academy and Houses. A journal from Scorio's former self warns them not to trust the institutions governing the cycle. They join Naomi, Leonis, Lianshi, Juniper, and Zala in planning to leave Bastion for the Rascor Plains and investigate the truth.

Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)

Scorio awakens without memories in a copper tomb and joins Leonis, Lianshi, and Asha. Their path leads through a lethal sequence of chambers. Asha, Leonis, and Lianshi die one by one, and Scorio reaches a fourth chamber before falling to his own death. All four then awaken restored in a basilica. Praximar, Chancellor of Bastion's Academy, explains that they are repeatedly reborn Great Souls and that the gauntlet measures each new cohort. The Archspire identifies leading entrants including Jova Spike and Ravenna Accardi, then names Scorio as the Scourer, a former Blood Baron who has been absent for 233 years and is proscribed on the Red List. Academy authorities seize him despite his amnesia. Praximar drains power from Scorio's igneous heart and has him cast through the Final Door into the dangerous caverns below Bastion. Wounded and unable to use his heart reliably, Scorio survives an attack and encounters Hestia and another Red List prisoner. They belong to a small underground refuge whose occupants are preparing an escape attempt.

Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)

The Warrens refuge recruits Scorio for an attempt to raise the brass door that confines them. Its residents include Hestia, Nissa, Havert, and Salamander. The mechanism fails, and a powerful fiend forces the door open. Nissa incapacitates Havert to preserve the escape, the fiend kills him, and Hestia is dragged back as Scorio flees. Separated from the others, Scorio finds Rattart's body and inherits magical chalk, a locking steel rod, and an expanding bridge. He uses them to climb out into Bastion. Musicians Helena and Feiyan trade him food, clothing, information, and an introduction to the criminal leader Dola. Scorio joins a theft from House Camara, escapes with two vials of sapphire mana, and refuses to return them, making Dola an enemy. In the ruins, a powerful Emberling called the Nightmare Lady takes the vials and two treasures. Scorio bargains for instruction by promising to defeat her within three nights. He traps her between barriers made with Rattart's chalk, and she accepts that the ambush earns him one week of teaching.

Story so far - through chapter 23 (this book)

The Nightmare Lady reveals her name as Naomi and teaches Scorio to draw ambient mana into his igneous heart. She explains that ignition requires both saturation and the pressure of frustrated ambition. Scorio refuses House service and will not endanger Leonis or Lianshi to gain Academy resources. After harsh combat training, he explains that he seeks the power to define his own worth and resist institutions that discard people. Naomi admits she was born in Bastion, advanced without conventional Academy support, and left after passing her first trial. She begins training him in earnest. Scorio gathers black star flowers and consumes a dangerously concentrated tincture while saturated with coal mana. He survives and ignites his heart, becoming a Cinder, though rapidly spending his reserves leaves him debilitated. Seeking allies and a route toward the Rascor Plains, he returns to Feiyan and Helena's venue, the Flame. Feiyan tells him when Academy students visit the graveyard market. There Scorio reunites with Leonis and Lianshi, who had believed him dead. They remain loyal, agree to investigate access to his former-life locker, and establish regular meetings while Scorio continues living outside the Academy as a fugitive.

Story so far - through chapter 31 (this book)

Scorio starts cultivating black star flowers as an independent mana supply. Leonis and Lianshi obtain maps and a copied key, then smuggle him into the Academy disguised as a courier. They reveal that Leonis was formerly a Pyre Lord and Lianshi a Charnel Duke. Scorio reaches his old locker but finds it empty except for Jova Spike's name carved into the back. The friends infer that his former self may have intended Jova to hold a message, yet approaching her could expose him. Naomi resumes training Scorio and teaches him to store mana and read its flow in combat. His hidden crop begins to grow. Scorio, Leonis, and Lianshi then explore the deeper ruins. They fight a giant speaking toad near the abandoned old Academy, release it under an agreement, and enter the complex. Inside they find a broken Archspire, intact rebirth biers, and evidence that the place was looted long ago. Scorio activates one of the biers despite the unknown danger and enters an older gauntlet alone, opening a new but hazardous route for training and investigation.

Story so far - through chapter 42 (this book)

The old gauntlet kills Scorio repeatedly and leaves lingering pain after revival. Leonis and Lianshi join his runs, and Naomi later escorts him through higher chambers, but his drive becomes dangerously self-destructive. She limits his schedule after he collapses and warns that unmanaged strain can damage both heart and mind. Scorio nevertheless develops a potent supply of coal mana from his flower crop. During a group visit to the old Academy, Imperator Imogen arrives inside a vast shadow cloud, seizes the broken Archspire, and attempts to force open Bastion's portal. Praximar and the city's defenders cannot contain her, and her fog takes control of nearly everyone nearby. Scorio escapes into the gauntlet, returns, and persuades Imogen to spare him. She recognizes him as a companion from forgotten lives. A golden Imperator, her former partner, arrives to prevent her from opening the portal and killing Bastion's inhabitants. When Imogen begins to overpower him, Scorio distracts her long enough for the golden Imperator to gain preeminence. Imogen retreats, leaving parts of Bastion devastated. The golden Imperator restores Scorio's heart only to its already damaged condition and directs the White Queen to secure his readmission to the Academy.

Story so far - through chapter 51 (this book)

Praximar reluctantly readmits Scorio, and Naomi joins Scorio, Leonis, and Lianshi as an Academy suite group. Bastion remains damaged and angry after Imogen's assault. Academy assessments show Scorio can ignite iron mana, but his overuse of coal mana and extreme training have badly fractured his heart. It loses about a third of the mana he draws, and further strain could destroy it. Healing resources and sponsorship become urgent, so Scorio obtains special entry into the tournament despite still being a Cinder. He wins his qualifying bout with an overwhelming iron-mana strike, then survives another round by returning to coal mana, which leaves him dangerously uncontrolled. Gelegos and a House Camara delegation assess his unusual potential and offer conditional sponsorship with extensive treatment and oversight. Scorio accepts the prospect of healing without abandoning his planned final-gauntlet team. He then asks Jova Spike to investigate why her name was left in his former locker. She refuses because she trusts the Red List judgment against him. They seal a wager: if Scorio surpasses her in the final gauntlet, she must investigate his past; if he loses, he must leave the Academy.

Story so far - through chapter 58 (this book)

At the Flame, Scorio's celebration of his prospective sponsorship exposes growing civilian hostility toward Great Souls. He drunkenly attacks Naomi's distrust of the arrangement, and she leaves. Praximar then reveals knowledge of Scorio's theft from House Camara and demands a binding promise that Scorio lose his next tournament bout, stop early in the final gauntlet, and leave the Academy. Scorio refuses to surrender his choices, even though Naomi ends their partnership and his House support seems certain to vanish. He voluntarily confesses the theft to Gelegos. The recruiter respects his candor but must withdraw House Camara's offer, ending Praximar's immediate leverage and leaving Scorio without a conventional path to healing. Scorio returns to hunting in the ruins and finds the old Academy sealed. The giant toad introduces himself as Nox, an Imperial Ghost Toad, and shows him a hidden route underground. Scorio, Leonis, and Lianshi resume secret gauntlet runs through that passage. During one run, Lianshi reaches her first trial and becomes an Emberling. Her new ability grants brief glass-like invulnerability, improving the team's prospects while Scorio and Leonis remain Cinders.

Story so far - through chapter 66 (this book)

Scorio loses his tournament bout to an Emberling and turns to Nox's mana-condensation method as his remaining chance to advance. With help from Gelegos, Leonis, and Lianshi, he trades a treatise on Nox's favorite game for instruction. The plan requires hundreds of black star plants, dangerously concentrated tincture, and Nox's stabilizing imperial gel. Lianshi initially withdraws over Scorio's willingness to risk death, while Leonis objects but stays to help. Leonis reaches Emberling during their secret gauntlet training and manifests a massive rune-marked club. Jova reveals that she has already become a Tomb Spark. Scorio's new crop is then destroyed by mana-hunting creatures, apparently ending his plan, but Naomi returns to defend the group and offers the sapphire mana she took from him. In Nox's gel, Scorio combines that mana with his remaining coal syrup and is drawn into his first trial. He relives a past attempt to rescue his brother from execution and sees Kuragin serving the opposing king. Scorio completes the trial and becomes an Emberling with black scales, heated claws, greater reach, and stronger dark vision, though his fractured heart still leaks mana.

Story so far - through chapter 70 (this book)

Newly advanced, Scorio defeats Naomi in a lethal practice spar, and both revive afterward. Their wager requires her to join his final-gauntlet team, which now consists of four Emberlings: Scorio, Naomi, Leonis, and Lianshi. Praximar allows Naomi to return only after Scorio accepts another high-stakes condition governing their departure if they fail to outperform Jova. On the eve of the run, Scorio seeks answers from Kuragin about the trial vision involving his brother. Kuragin demands an unsanctioned duel in exchange for his account. Scorio wins but breaks his arm and gives up outside healing before the gauntlet. Kuragin then names Scorio's brother as Eberro and claims his own trial showed Scorio betraying the captured rebel after once rescuing him. Naomi explains that later trials can branch from earlier choices, so the allegation is not settled history. Lianshi also reconciles with Juniper, whose fate had appeared in her own trial. With Scorio's arm still damaged and his heart slow to fill, the Academy's second gauntlet begins. The four activate their crystals together, relying on their extensive secret practice and team average to challenge Jova's group.

Story so far - through chapter 79 (this book)

Scorio's team clears the early gauntlet through coordinated use of Leonis's club, Lianshi's invulnerability, Naomi's speed, and Scorio's transformed claws. Injuries accumulate as the rooms grow harder. A hidden golden assassin kills Naomi in the tenth chamber. Lianshi dies in a web-and-funnel trap, and Leonis sacrifices himself to break through a swarm and save Scorio. Alone and unable to stand, Scorio stops defining himself only in opposition to Praximar and accepts responsibility for deeds associated with his prior lives. He passes his second trial, reliving the moment his former self took command of a rebellion after breaking with Eberro's plan to seek clemency. Scorio becomes a Tomb Spark, gains a protective shroud and an oppressive aura, and continues through the gauntlet with his injuries healed by advancement. A replay shows Jova dying in the eighteenth chamber's rotating-platform trial. Scorio reaches one segment farther before he also dies. After everyone revives, the Archspire declares that both reached the same chamber but Scorio progressed farther. He wins the gauntlet, refuses every House and further Academy training, and leaves the ceremony with Jova after she likewise rejects Praximar's attempt to claim her as the winner.

Story so far - through chapter 80 (this book)

Jova honors her wager and shares a journal entry from Scorio's incarnation 233 years earlier. The message warns him not to trust the Houses, Imperators, or herdsmen. It says the cycle can be broken only by attaining a named ultimate role, and it emphasizes that Scorio cannot succeed alone. Scorio explains that he used Nox's mana-condensation pool to become an Emberling and advanced to Tomb Spark within the final gauntlet. His fractured heart makes the former self's demand especially difficult, but Jova agrees to help investigate the warning and the system behind their rebirths. Naomi, Leonis, Lianshi, Juniper, and Zala also commit to leaving with them, forming a seven-person fellowship. Helena and Feiyan have contacted Manticore as a possible means of escape from Bastion. The group plans to meet at the Western Gates and travel toward the Rascor Plains before Praximar can retaliate. They leave the Academy and Houses behind, while Imogen's threat, Bastion's unrest, Scorio's unstable heart, Eberro's fate, and the true purpose of the cycle remain unresolved.

How does it end? (ending)

Scorio passes his second trial during the final gauntlet, becomes a Tomb Spark, and advances slightly farther than Jova Spike. The Academy declares him the winner, but he refuses further training and every House offer. Jova honors their wager, rejects Praximar's attempt to give her the victory, and shares a journal entry written by Scorio's incarnation 233 years earlier. The message warns against the Houses, Imperators, and herdsmen, says the cycle can be broken only by attaining a named ultimate role, and insists that Scorio will need allies. Jova agrees to help investigate. Naomi, Leonis, Lianshi, Juniper, and Zala also join Scorio, creating a seven-person fellowship. Helena and Feiyan have contacted Manticore to assist their escape, and the group plans to meet at the Western Gates before heading toward the Rascor Plains. Praximar remains hostile, Scorio's heart is still fractured, Imogen remains at large, and Bastion is politically unstable amid organized resistance to Great Soul rule.
